Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go.

Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster.

And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter.

My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony.

Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning.

Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut.

Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs.

Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process).

One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather?

Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched.

As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug.

I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home.

Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers.

Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell.

I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island.

“Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

“There are also many people right here on Long Island who need our help and we hope Long Islanders’ continued generosity to support one another, both near and far, will continue into the holiday season. Last year, a record 18,300 pounds of food and over 2,300 turkeys were donated to Island Harvest Food Bank and our goal this year is to top those numbers. Please come out and support your neighbors!”

interdisciplinary health care environment. The center simulates real-world situations, using advanced simulation equipment. The participants learn proper interventions, refine interprofessional skills, and increase confidence in their abilities.

“What’s different about this center is that this is an Interprofessional Simulation Center where our students work together to learn teamwork and be the best health care professions they can be,” Dr. Gropack said. “This Center provides a safe environment to create simulations so our students are ready for the real-world situations.”

LIU Post’s Interprofessional Simulation Center is unique as it supports interdisciplinary and translational research, adding to the body of knowledge on simulation,

practice, technology, quality, and safety in a realworld health care setting.

It works with the medical imaging lab as well.

“What makes this center unique is critical and will make our students better health care providers and that means a better patient outcome,” Dr. Knapp said.

The Interprofessional Simulation Center operates like a real hospital, including equipment, supplies, and eight mannequins that are controlled by faculty and act as simulated patients that model human behavior and respond to medical interventions such as CPR, medication, and treatment.

Among the different scenarios the Center is able to replicate is a maternity ward with a mannequin that simulates a live birth, including a “sim baby” which responds to treatment. Students

interact with the simulated experience as part of their classroom curricula, participating in roleplay scenarios in a teambased atmosphere. These exercises help students develop comfort in medical settings, in a safe clinical environment.

“My undergraduate and graduate degrees from LIU Post prepared me for a vigorous career. I was blessed to have been able to come to this University,” Mack said, noting that this new Center will help prepare the next generation of great health care professionals.

LI Cares to be Honored Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank has been chosen to receive the 2017 “Long Island Community Foundation Nonprofit Impact Award” from the Association of Fundraising Professionals - Long Island Chapter.

The award is presented to a nonprofit that helps improve the quality of life on Long Island by addressing critical community needs through innovative programs that employ interdisciplinary or collaborative approaches.

“We are very honored to receive this recognition from the The Association of

Fundraising ProfessionalsLong Island Chapter,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares.

“To be presented with this award the very first time it is given is quite an honor.

Okst is motivated by his growing awareness of the importance of communication skills in his role.

“Being involved in theater for the past four years and now having this responsibility have both definitely increased my leadership skills,” said Okst. “It’s also important for students to understand the role of our board of education and I like being that connection.”

Three Village Central School District’s Arrowhead Elementary School kindergartners recently learned about the medical field in a fun and interactive way when

representatives from Stony Brook Children’s Hospital conducted the “Teddy Bear Clinic” program.

During this event, the students learned about such things as car and

helmet safety before dressing up as doctors and nurses and “taking care” of their injured stuffed animals.

Jefferson’s Ferry’s recent Monte Carlo Night Fundraising Gala was the most successful in its 14 year history.

The gala, which benefits the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s Resident Assistance Fund, made a net profit of close to $78,000 from ticket sales and raffles.

The Resident Assistance Fund plays a critical role at Jefferson’s Ferry by covering the monthly fees of residents who have outlived their assets or experience an unanticipated financial need through no fault of their own. Monte Carlo Night, the Foundation’s largest fundraising event,

Painted Runners Three Village Central School District’s Setauket Elementary School recently sponsored its first Color Splash Run/ Walk in honor of one of Setauket’s students, Amelia Calderone, who is suffering from Langerhans cell histiocytosis, an illness

that causes the production of too many white blood cells and causes the formation of tumors.

Approximately 600 students, parents and staff members registered for the event. Despite the rain, the majority of registrants turned out for dancing,

color-splashing and a onemile trek in honor of this very special student.

The race went from Setauket School through Frank Melville Park and back to the school and raised more than $6,800 for the Calderone family.

Faima Quadir and Andrew Zhang, Ward Melville High School students in the Three Village Central School District, are among the 491 semifinalists named nationwide on October 17th in the 2017 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.

The semifinalists were selected from more than 1,860 projects in science, technology, engineering and math fields.

Faima worked on a group project called “Cloud Mode Anomaly Detection in the Cimel Sunphotometer Using Machine Learning Algorithms” – a project that looked at ways to enhance the current tools used for predicting, monitoring and managing

future climate change.

As part of her research, Faima worked to create a program in Python that would automate anomaly detection through machine learning algorithms, which look for patterns in the data in order to classify it as good or bad.

Andrew’s project was titled “Sorting SingleWalled Carbon Nanotubes Using the Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and the Synthesized Organic Molecule Triptycene-Dimer.”

In this project, a nonplanar aromatic molecule, triptycene-dimer (tripdimer), and a common surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), were used to sort single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs).

SWNTs have the capability to replace silicon as the semiconductor used for computing applications.

To realize this promise, methods such as these need to be developed to sort SWNTs into their constituent components.

According to the organization, the semifinalists’ will now be judged to determine who advances on to six regional competitions held in November. Individual and team winners of the regional contests earn the opportunity to compete in the National Finals held Ms. Lisa Scrom’s thirdat the George Washington University in Washington, grade music classes at Edna D.C. in December where Louise Spear Elementary $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top prizes of $100,000.

Canstruction Charity Event Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank has been named one of four nonprofit organizations to play a role in the 11th annual Canstruction® Long Island Design/Build Competition that aims to fight hunger in the community. The event brings together architects, engineers, and design and construction professionals to design and build gravitydefying sculptures from thousands of cans of food.

Local teams of professionals, including

student and community groups, will create designs and build sculptural structures on October 25th from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m. An awards reception will be held on October 26th from 6 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to view the exhibit of sculptures from October 27 through November 12th, at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Exhibit hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is one can of food, which can be used to cast a vote for the “People’s Choice” awards.

At the close of the event, Long Island Cares and three other nonprofits will distribute all the cans used in the sculptures to local food pantries and other emergency feeding programs – including soup kitchens and shelters.

2017 marks the eighth year of involvement for Long Island Cares. The nonprofit was involved in 2008, and in every year consecutively since 2011.

“Canstruction Long Island is a remarkable event that uses awe-

inspiring designs to create structures out of thousands of cans to drive home the fact that there are still thousands in our local communities who are hungry and food insecure,” said Paule T. Pachter, CEO of Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank. “On behalf of the staff and volunteers of Long Island Cares, it is an honor to be part of the distribution of the canned food that is generated from this highly innovative food drive.”

Last year, Canstruction Long Island utilized 46,686 pounds of donated canned food, which was given to the beneficiaries, including Long Island Cares, to distribute to emergency feeding programs. Since 2007, Canstruction Long Island has donated more than 380,000 cans of food – the equivalent of 240,000plus meals – and in excess of $35,000 to help feed the hungry on Long Island.

Canstruction® is an annual international event. It was started in

1992 in New York City as a way for members of the architectural, engineering, and design and construction (A/E/C) industries to give back to their local communities.

It is now held in more than 150 cities worldwide.

STEAM-Fueled Excitement While the dedicated volunteers at SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) are hard at work planning the first ever SBPLI Long Island Regional double header, the Half Hollow Hills High School FIRST® Robotics Competition team is ramping up for its Sixth Annual Half Hollow Hills (HHH) Invitational. This year’s event, the final event of the 2016-2017 FIRST®

(For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island season, will take place on Saturday, November 18th, at the district’s west campus.

As one of many robotics programs supported by SBPLI, which aims to help immerse schools in the rapidly growing area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education,

the HHH Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs to students, schools, communities and local businesses.

During the event, students and coaches from 24 Long Island school districts will participate in an enjoyable and engaging learning environment that enhances problem-solving skills, cooperation and teamwork. Participating

teams will compete under the rules and guidelines of the 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition challenge, dubbed FIRST STEAMWORKS™. During the Invitational, which mimics the tournamentstyle competition of the SBPLI Long Island Regional, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks to score points and win the

round, with the hopes of eventually advancing to eliminations and finals.

Residents, teachers, administrators and business leaders from the surrounding areas are invited to attend and discover first-hand the benefits that FIRST Robotics programs provide to students. This event is also the perfect opportunity for schools and organizations interested in

starting a team to meet with SBPLI leaders and speak with participants to gather more information.

Following the Invitational, teams will start to prepare for the new season, which kicks-off on January 6th, 2018 at Stony Brook University.
