Fundraising Benefit The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, will be hosting a fundraising benefit on Sunday, October 26 at 7 p.m. for its outreach program called Operation Creole Love Song, a music program started in 2017 for the students of Carrefour, Haiti, a town outside the capital of Port au Prince.

The Jazz Loft Ambassadors travel to a school in Carrefour

to establish a music program which provides the school’s students with musical instruments, as well as funding to support and maintain the program.

Students can learn to play a selection of instruments, including the trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, and others.

The Loft Ambassadors are not only music educators and performers, but also aid in humanitarian

efforts.

Throughout the year the Jazz Loft sends school supplies, clothing, sneakers, food, instruments supplies and other needed items to support the students and people of Carrefour.

“This Jazz Loft outreach program is important to me because it emphasizes that our community is only as big as the circle we decide to draw,” said Jazz Loft Founder Tom

Manuel. “It’s an honor to bring the love, acceptance, encouragement, joy and the spirit of Jazz to Haiti.”

The musical program for the October 26 benefit will be presented by a band of the Jazz Loft Ambassadors, musicians and educators who have been to Haiti to perform and teach. The music is a mix of American Jazz, traditional Haitian music and other things like gospel, folk music and

Art Takes Shape In honor of their artistic talents, eight Three Village Central School District students were celebrated during the 2019 Hexagon Project.

The arts program was designed to spread the meaning of interdependence through schooland community-created hexa-gons. According to the organization, the hexagons feature different themes, which have included social justice, identity, peace and the environment. The overall mission of the project is to show the power of arts in an increasingly interconnected world.

Coast Guard Auxiliary Competition The US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Port Jefferson Flotilla, is sponsoring a competition for high school students: Solution4Pollution.

Supported by a grant from the New York State Sea Grant, the competition is aimed at Long Island public and private high school students, who will submit concepts for reducing trash in our waterways and on our beaches. Much of this trash is the result of individuals and governments assuming that the waterways that we enjoy and live near are virtually infinite sinks

for refuse. We observe in the water and on beaches piles of trash comprised of plastic bags and other plastic products. It is estimated that there are 25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Agape Community Church of Mastic Beach will be holding their Annual Thanksgiving Community Feast on Saturday, November 23rd from 1PM-4PM. There will be a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner to sit and enjoy and guests will receive food to take home. They are now accepting donations of food items as well as toys for an upcoming toy giveaway event. Also, volunteers are needed to bring a cooked dish for this meal. P.J. Gelinas Junior High School student-actors will take to the stage this October to unveil the world premiere of the adolescent issue play “You Are Never Alone.”

The show follows a group of students as they navigate an average day and reveal the internal and external stressors that disrupt and distract them. Each student keeps their doubt to themselves, struggling to contain it, but as the audience

peeks into their thoughts, they realize that many individuals have shared these stressors. “You Are Never Alone” tells familiar stories of anxiety, fear, guilt and pressure, to remind the audience that these feelings are common, that help is available, and that no one has to deal with the situation alone.

The play will open to the public on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $2 per person and $10 per family.

Gelinas students will view the play for free during the school day.

“You Are Never Alone” was written by Dan Rieckhoff, with story development by Robert DePersio, Brianna Gobetz, Mr. Rieckhoff, Pamela Roberts and Michael Jantzen. All are educators in the Three Village Central School District.

This marks the schools 17th annual adolescent issue production.

The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau will sponsor two timely and meaningful events during Red Ribbon Week, held annually from October 23 through October 31. Red Ribbon Week was established by angered parents and youth from communities across the country in response to the 1985 murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena.

They began wearing red ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. In 1988, the National Family Sponsorship presented the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, Red Ribbon Week serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. Loss Inspires Student’s Fundraiser Turning a personal loss into a positive force for change, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School ninth grader Joseph Nizza helped to raise thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society and to fund a scholarship for Ward Melville High School graduates.

“Ever since my mother, Natalie Nizza a renowned doctor in this community passed away after an 80 day

battle with cancer at 45, I knew I had to do something to not let the grief overrun me but I had to use it as the tip of my sword,” Joseph said. “My mother was a doctor for 20 years and gave her all to her job and patients, and with this fundraiser I gave my all to the community.”

Last spring, Joseph made a presentation at each of the Gelinas spring concerts and

raised donations from the audience. As a result of the community’s generosity, more than $2,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society and another $8,000 was collected to build a scholarship that will be given to a graduating high school female student who is pursuing a career in a medical field like his mother.

Halt Hazards With These Tips

According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration was too close

to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires.

NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable.

Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper,

and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs.

Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly.

Keep them in a wellattended area out of the path of potential trick-ortreaters. Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised at all times when candles are

Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun.

“Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of

Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.
