came together to enjoy a multistationed carnival and show their Patriots Pride. Set up on the back lawn of the school, the event featured games and activities for all ages, including bounce houses and face painting stations.

Additionally, the banners created by each elementary school in honor of the event and in celebration of the district’s 50th anniversary were displayed throughout the carnival grounds.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Patriots logo and team name was painted pink on the stadium field and many players wore the color as part of their team uniform.

Additionally, members of the varsity cheerleading team used pink pom-poms as they led the supportive crowd in many cheers.

When the varsity football team took to the field, a sense of support filled the stadium; support not only for the hometown team but also the competitors from Sachem East. Ward Melville players led a moment of silence at the start of the game for a member of the Sachem football community who had passed away earlier this year and painted a number 5 on the visitor’s sidelines to show their support.

Spirit and pride abounded as the Three Village Central School District came together to celebrate homecoming 2017 under sunny and warm skies this October.

The event began with an early morning ceremony for the Class of 2017 Hall of Fame inductees.

The Ward Melville High School Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the athletic programs at Ward Melville through their participation as athletes, tireless efforts as administrators, coaches and friends and the unparalleled support of friends.

Girl Scouts Honored

Proud parents were wearing Kool-Aid smiles as Councilman Dan Panico honored Center Moriches Girl Scout Troop #2957 at Brookhaven Town Hall on September 28th.

The girls worked with the Brookhaven Youth Bureau to help earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.

They raised donations by

collecting recyclables from Clayton Huey Elementary School in Center Moriches and holding a spring fling dance.

With the donations, the girls purchased backpacks to give to children in Brookhaven Town who will be transitioning into foster homes. In each backpack was a personal letter from the troop with items such as blankets, crayons and

coloring books.

Plover’s on West Meadow Beach” was filmed locally in summer 2016 and documents the plight of the piping plover, an endangered bird species.

The pledge, which is mirrored after the “Day 1 Pledge,” focuses on treating others with respect, kindness and empathy. Members of the entire studentbody had the chance to learn about the initiative during a special morning announcement shared by group members and were invited to join the cause by becoming kindness ambassadors and signing a copy of the declaration this

fall.

The school plans to celebrate those who display “up-standing” behaviors on the building’s new “UpStanders Tree” completed last year by the life skills students who are enrolled in Robert Ciaccio’s technology course and the students in John Schumacher’s Principals of Engineering class. The Brookhaven Youth Bureau is teaming up with all Custom, Classic and Modified Car, Truck and Motorcycle Clubs to help families in need on Sunday, November 12th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This annual event is sure to be fun for the entire family, as club members will be displaying their cars and motorcycles at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville in an effort to raise donations for families in need through the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program.

Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the Thanksgiving Food Drive and new, unwrapped toys for children to open during the holiday season. Last year’s event raised $3,400 for turkeys and 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food, along with more than $25,000 worth of toys.

Admission is free and cash donations are accepted.

There will be no judging of the vehicles and trophies

will not be rewarded. Free hot dogs and beverages will be served and there will be live music and entertainment throughout the day. Four Rocky Point High School seniors have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program – Kyle Markland and Jade Pinkenburg have been named 2018 semifinalists and Patrick Farrell and Connor Middleton have been named Commended Students.

The students qualified for these honors by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of the approximate 1.6 million entrants each year.

Annually, approximately 16,000 students, or roughly one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as semifinalists and are invited to continue in the competition for the chance to be named finalists and National Merit Scholarship award

Students at Port Jefferson Middle School are working in conjunction with Port Jefferson Village in the Paint Port Pink initiative for the Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital.

As part of the October community outreach of raising awareness about breast cancer, Monica Consalvo, a teacher at the school, along with

seventh-grade students Ellery Tafuro and Tamara Scully, created a poster that hangs in the hallway to showcase ways that others can become involved in the community activities. Some of the local businesses involved in the campaign have special offers for the month and students, families and school staff members are encouraged to visit the

shops to help with the awareness efforts.

As concerned community partners, the students and staff will each write their name on a pink ribbon sticker and all the stickers will be colorfully displayed within a larger ribbon outline showing that they are all engaged in the endeavor.

Eagle Honoree On Sunday, October 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Boy Scout Troop 187 at the Ridge Fire Department for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony to recognize Eagle Scout Thomas Michael Hart IV. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be earned by a Boy Scout, and only a small percentage of scouts are granted this rank after earning 21 merit badges and a lengthy review process.

“I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Thomas for earning

the rank of Eagle Scouts with Troop 187. Only those who demonstrate true hard work, skill, and commitment to the community earn this prestigious rank,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank him for his contributions to the community, and I would also like to thank the parents and volunteers who are involved with our scout troops and help guide our children to become community leaders.”

In order to earn the rank of Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts must complete a service project that creates

a lasting contribution to the community. For his project, Thomas built a lean-to for the Longwood Estates to store chopped wood. The wood is needed for the historic cooking demonstrations at the Longwood Estates. These demonstrations allow participants to have a more accurate understanding of the 17th and 18th century time period.

Scholars Recognized In recognition of their outstanding performance within the Advanced Placement program and related examinations, 70 Rocky Point High School students have earned the honor of being named an Advanced Placement Scholar. This total – the most recent data available – includes current students and members of the Class of 2017.

These awards are bestowed upon students in a number of categories, each differing based on the number of exams taken

and the students scores on those exams.

Thirty-seven students were named AP Scholar for receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

Fifteen were named AP Scholars with Honor for receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

Nineteen students were named AP Scholars with Distinction for receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken,

and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Six students were named National AP Scholars, an honor granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, having majored in psychology, attended Ohio State University graduate school, and served as a lieutenant in the Air Force, assigned to the Aerospace Medical Research facility at Wright-Patterson Air Force base, Dayton, Ohio.

This was one of the units involved in preparing astronauts for the first U. S. space missions. His last and final tour was to an air force research group stationed at Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks, Alaska.

He then moved to New York where he had a long and diverse career in advertising, retiring as senior vice-president

Program for two years. He excelled and was one of my best students. He was on the honor roll every quarter and a great leader and role model to the other students in the class.”

Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible.

Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time.

Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond.

Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure.

As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district.

Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives.

Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper.

Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too.

What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile.

Selected for All-State Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students, Trey Pisano and Annalisa Welinder, were selected to participate in the New York State School Music Association AllState Winter Conference in Rochester, New York from November 30th-December 3rd.

Trey will perform on

double bass with the AllState Instrumental Jazz Ensemble and Annalisa will play violin with the Symphony Orchestra. They will sit among the finest musicians across New York State.

The rigorous process for selecting an AllState musician includes teacher recommendations, audition scores at the

NYSSMA solo evaluation festival during the prior spring and participation in other performing organizations.

“Congratulations to Trey and Annalisa for representing the Port Jefferson School District’s music program with pride,” said Michael Caravello, the district’s director of music and fine arts.

Selected for All-County Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students Ibuki Iwasaki, Jillian Lawler, Cezanne Lojeski and David Rotunno were selected to participate in the New York State Council of Administrators for Music Education All-County Music Festival. The three-

day event culminates with a concert to be held at Hauppauge High School on November 17th.

The musically-talented teens were chosen to perform with other students from across Suffolk County on a competitive basis with their New York State School Music Association

scores as the primary criteria along with teacher recommendations.

NYSCAME works to promote high standards of administrative leadership and improve music education programs in Suffolk County among other endeavors.

After a successful pilot program with the girls tennis teams in the fall, the Port Jefferson School District Athletic Department has launched FamilyID, an online sports registration platform that will replace paper registration starting with the 2017 winter sports season.
