Paint Port Pink Paint Port Pink, Mather Hospital’s annual breast cancer awareness campaign, returns this year with a full calendar of events.

The month-long breast health outreach by Mather’s Fortunato Breast Health Center raises awareness, provides educational information, and fosters solidarity in the community.

The Pink Your Pumpkin contest returns this year.

The contest asks participants to visit a local farm stand or craft store and find the perfect pumpkin, use their imagination to decorate, and then submit a photo to ccourt1@northwell.edu before Oct. 20. The top three winners will be selected by employee leaders at Mather Hospital on Oct. 21, and the results will be posted on Mather’s Facebook page.

Wear Pink Day is October 18 – which is World Mammography Day – when Mather employees and community residents are encouraged to dress in pink and post their photos at #paintportpink.

Blessings In A Backpack Food Drive Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker is partnering with Blessings in a Backpack Longwood Chapter for a food drive at her office in Mount Sinai until November 1st.

“Blessings in a Backpack ensures that students do not go hungry over the weekend by providing

pre-packed meals and the comfort of knowing that the community is here to help and support them.

Inventors Capture Top Award Ward Melville High School’s Team Polaris – made up of students Elyas Masrour, Christopher Moore, Rohan Nagavardhan and Abdullah Nauman – won the “Best Health Hack” in the annual hackathon event at Stony Brook University.

At this intensive 24hour event, the students developed a smart accessory to enable safer navigation for the visually impaired. The product is a smart speaker that can

be clipped onto a cane, an everyday necessity for the blind. This speaker uses a singular button and voice commands to bring the conveniences of GPS to the blind. The students’ booth was one of two, visited by Suffolk County Executive Steve Belone, upon recommendation of the tournament organizers.

“Being the only high school students participating at the event and having been selected out of over 200 college

students, we are incredibly proud to have represented Ward Melville High School,” said Abdullah Nauman. “We feel that this achievement is a testament to the math and computer science programs at Ward Melville.

Having had the opportunity to take Multivariable Calculus last year provided us with the background of knowledge to build machine learning and navigation systems at a collegiate level.”

Coast Guard Auxiliary Competition The US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Port Jefferson Flotilla, is sponsoring a competition for high school students: Solution4Pollution.

Supported by a grant from the New York State Sea Grant, the competition is aimed at Long Island public and private high school students, who will submit concepts for reducing trash in our waterways and on our beaches. The focus will be on the Long Island Sound, with special reference to

associated harbors. The goal will be to create costeffective methods to return our waterways to a trash free sea.

Waterway trash pollution is both unsightly and unhealthy. Trash can contain contaminants that are toxic to marine animals and humans.

Much of this trash is the result of individuals and governments assuming that the waterways that we enjoy and live near are virtually infinite sinks for refuse. We observe in

the water and on beaches piles of trash comprised of plastic bags and other plastic products. It is estimated that there are 25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean.

Cash awards will be given to the top three winning entries. Due date for entries is April 1, 2020.

On Tuesday, October 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the North Shore Neighbors Breast Cancer Coalition, the Heritage Trust, and residents at the Pink Tree of Hope tree lighting held at Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. The tree will be illuminated with pink lights throughout the month of October for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Having lost my grandmother to breast

cancer, I am honored to partner with the North Shore Neighbors Breast Cancer Coalition to raise awareness about the prevalence of breast cancer, honor our loved ones lost to breast cancer, and support survivors across Long Island,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank Patti Kozlowski and the North Shore Neighbors for their important work to help cancer patients, survivors, and their families in our local

communities. I would also like to thank Koch Tree Services and the Heritage Trust for their generous sponsorship.”

Sharing Cultures Three Village Central School District English as a New Language Department recently hosted two programs to bridge learning opportunities for students.

A “Welcome Breakfast” was held for ENL elementary students at W.S. Mount Elementary School. As several new families had moved into the district for the 2019-2020

school year, the program provide the opportunity for students to meet with other students who may speak their home language to provide comfort and a sense of home in their new surroundings.

Additionally, Ward Melville High School recently welcomed a group of students from Italy. The visitors were welcomed during a meet and greet

breakfast and then were invited to shadow several Ward Melville students as they attended classes.

In the afternoon, the group gathered back together to share their thoughts about the day and compare experiences.

The following day, the students accompanied the visitors to a workshop on migration at Stony Brook University.

CHIMNEY SWEEP

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual e v e n t (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), and Bake Team Members (to donate baked

goods to sell at some of the events).

Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours!

Recreation Night Helps Build Friendships

Rocky Point Teacher Recognized After 33 years in the Rocky Point School District, special education teacher Cheryl Fusco was recognized for her service and dedication to the students and community at the Sept. 16 board of education meeting.

“Mrs. Fusco was a leader in the building, sharing her expertise as a Wilson Fundations coach and special education mentor to teachers for over 20 years,” Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School Principal Dr.

Virginia Gibbons said.

“Our students have benefited greatly under her guidance and compassion.

Mrs. Fusco’s legacy will be evident long after she retires.”

R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh grade students recently came together and got to know their peers better during a grade-level recreation night hosted by the building’s student

business hours within those seven days before surgery to allow for the blood to be taken from your pet and sent out for evaluation. This program has been provided by the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter in partnership with the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic.
