Miller Place Inducts New Class Into Its Athletic Hall Of Fame

The Miller Place School District recently inducted a new class into its Athletic Hall of Fame, including five alumni and two former coaches – one of whom was honored posthumously.

The Miller Place High School Jazz Band performed and volunteers handed out breakfast as guests took their seats for an intimate ceremony the morning of the District’s Homecoming Game. Following the ceremony, the inductees walked through a giant panther arch and through two rows of cheerleaders to be honored on the District’s Stadium Field.

“Each inductee has left an everlasting impression on the District on and off the field or court,” said Superintendent of Schools Seth Lipshie. These athletes and coaches were chosen by their peers for having such a great impact on the Miller Place Community and it’s an honor to celebrate them this way.”

Inductees included Andrew Stafford, who graduated in 1977, Jacqueline Curtiss, who graduated in 1979, Marion Mastrangelo, who graduated in 1984, Ellen Moorehead, who graduated in 1985, and Greg Gaillard, who graduated in 1996. Two coaches were also inducted, including Salvatore Passamano and Liz Borsetti. Ms. Borsetti, or Coach B, was honored posthumously.

Andrew Stafford, who played baseball and went to the University of Wyoming, was introduced as an ambassador of the Miller Place community for being a successful and versatile player on the field and an exceptionally kind and compassionate person off the field.

Jacy Curtiss was remembered for her time at Miller Place by shocking and impressing her coaches and peers when she won tennis matches with one arm in a sling. She played tennis and volleyball, but her main sport was badminton, qualifying for the Pan-Am

Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. She went on to play tennis at Western Illinois University.

Marion Mastrangelo was a field hockey goalkeeper who was referred to as a tangible threat, not just a target in the goal. Ms. Mastrangelo, who also played volleyball and softball, was named the number one goalkeeper on Long Island in 1983 and went to play at Long Island University Post.

Ellen Moorehead played tennis, basketball and softball at Miller Place and played European handball and bowling after graduating. She went to Dowling College on a full basketball scholarship and was the first female to score 1,000 points. This is the third hall of fame in which she has been honored as she was previously inducted into Dowling’s Hall of Fame and the Long Island Bowling Association’s Hall of Fame.

Greg Gaillard was a top scorer on the Boys Basketball team under Coach Seth Lipshie and scored 237 points in his freshman year and 1,414 by the time he graduated. He led the team to 28 victories, three county play-offs and a League Championship as a junior. Mr. Lipshie recalled his lightning-fast first step as being a staple of his athletic career at Miller Place.

Football Coach Sal Passamano started in 1975, became head coach in 1979 and retired in 1995 after 68 wins. He was named the Suffolk County Coach of the Year in 1984 by the Daily News and the New York State Coach of the Year in 1988. Ron Petrie, the District’s Director of Athletics, said “Mr. Passamno received numerous nominations to the Hall of Fame because his players truly wanted to see him there because of how much he did for them.”

Liz Borsetti, or Coach B, was honored posthumously and her daughters Danielle and Cathy accepted her award on her behalf. Ms. Borsetti, who died in 2017

at 70, coached field hockey and finished her career with 330 wins and 5 loses. She

also coached softball, where she finished her career with 60 titles. Her daughters said

that they were overwhelmed to hear about how much their mother impacted the

lives of her players because they impacted her just as much.

Port Jefferson School District Sets Dates For School Tours

The Port Jefferson School District has set three tour dates to keep residents informed on the bond referendum slated for a community vote on Dec. 12. The bond tours will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. and Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. and will be approximately one hour in length.

Attendees will meet in the main lobby of the high school/ middle school and will need to check in at the security vestibule. During the tours, community members will have an opportunity to ask questions of administration.

The proposal contains two propositions that cover muchneeded facilities renovations. Proposition No. 1, in the amount of $23,127,000,

focuses on key instruction and infrastructure needs, including improving indoor air quality, maximizing the efficiencies of building spaces, updating bathrooms for accessibility and enhancing student safety by bringing all programs into the main building at the middle school and high school. Proposition No. 2, in the amount of $1,876,000,

calls for the installation of a turf field at the high school to increase field use playability for all students. Please note, Proposition No. 2 is contingent on the passing of Proposition No. 1.

More information about the proposed bond is available on the District website under the Bond Project menu. Please save the Dec. 12 date to vote.

Listening To Jazz Music

The New Orleans Musicians Clinic reports that listening to jazz music can expand blood vessels by up to 30 percent.

Widening of blood vessels increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Maintaining a

healthy blood pressure is important, as the Mayo Clinic notes that unchecked high blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and/or dementia.

Royal Pride And Camaraderie At Port Jefferson’s Fall Sports Festival

Edna Louise Spear

Elementary School fifth graders recently visited Earl L. Vandermeulen High School for a Fall Sports Festival, where they were greeted by Athletic Director Adam Sherrard waving the Royal flag to welcome them.

The students followed Sherrard to the athletic

fields where the high school student-athletes and coaches from the varsity fall sports teams set up drills and activities so that younger students could experience all of the sports that are offered in the Port Jefferson School District.

The fifth graders rotated to areas throughout the

high school football field and track to spend time practicing cheerleading, cross-country, field hockey, football, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The Port Jefferson School District thanks the coaches and student-athletes for sharing in school pride and helping to promote the district’s athletic program.

Vivian is now a part of an elite group of student musicians who will represent the Rocky Point Music Department with the utmost level of pride and dedication. He also lauded his colleague, Schecher, for her guidance and support in positively impacting her students to achieve at the highest levels.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision .

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Douglas Elliman Long Island Makes A Large Impact

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino.

“When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Douglas Elliman Realty has long been deeply committed to giving back to the local communities it serves and supporting important causes nationwide through its philanthropic initiative, Elliman Cares.

Minnesauke Elementary School Takes Home The Emma Cup

Minnesauke Elementary School won this year’s Emma Cup for having the most students sign up and complete the Summer Reading Club at the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library. Each year, Three Village Central School District librarians collaborate with the public library to promote

the program, which gives students the opportunity to receive prizes as they read and report on books throughout the summer. Overall, participation increased this year and there was only a 0.4% range between Minnesauke Elementary School and the third-place school.

Across the district, 23,847

books were read, marking the highest number ever reported for the program and nearly 7,000 more books than last summer.

The district and public library congratulate all of this year’s participants for continuing to foster their love for reading during the summer.

American Cancer Society Announces The 29th Year Of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer On Long Island

The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement, will unite

residents across Long Island on October 16th, at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5.

In its 29th year, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement embraces a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, while raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. “Thanks in large part to the decades of work and the dollars raised, a breast cancer diagnosis does not come without hope, and the breast cancer journey is not one that has to be traveled alone,” says Brittany Lawton, Associate Director, Development.

This year, female breast cancer has surpassed lung cancer as the most

commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with more than 287,000 women diagnosed. Men are also impacted by breast cancer, with an estimated 2,710 men expected to receive a diagnosis in 2022.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

For more information contact the American Cancer Society via email at LongIslandNYStrides@ cancer.org and 212-
