Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine filed his 2017 Tentative Operating Budget with the Town Clerk this evening, presenting the spending plan at the beginning of the Town Board meeting.

The structurally balanced Budget holds the line on taxes and spending within the cost of living.

The 2017 Budget

complies with the New York State Tax Cap, Brookhaven’s Spending Cap and Debt Cap, increases snow removal funding by 4.9% and contains no layoffs or cuts in service. Rocky Point High School’s cosmetology program will open the doors of its salon on Friday, October 14th for the 2016-2017 season.

In preparation for their launch, students enrolled in the program have created a website to help promote the services offered.

As part of the program, the students learn all aspects of hair care, including cutting, styling, coloring and more. They also learn skin and nail care, enabling them to become an esthetician or nail technician. In the second year of the program, students expand their skillset and work

Signs. They’re everywhere.

You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky…

There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature.

Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment.

Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time.

As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.”

As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name.

Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain.

But it didn’t matter. What are the odds?

Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact.

Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always.

They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

On October 1st, nearly 250 people attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Division of Women’s Services 10th annual Conference and Expo held at Town Hall. This year’s conference featured keynote speaker Cherie Christmas, founder and chief operating officer of MAXX New York, a $40 million dollar handbag company. There were also workshops and vendor booths all geared toward promoting wellness and personal growth in the lives of women.

Ms. Christmas delivered a powerful message about overcoming adversity and becoming your own most valuable asset. Her story inspired audience members as she spoke of tackling problems in her life head-on and having the

confidence to follow her dream and eventually start her own company. “Find your passion, live from your heart and know you are beautiful and strong,” Ms. Christmas said.

“Our Division of Women’s Services improves the quality of life for so many women in the community,” said Supervisor Ed Romaine, who presented the opening remarks. “The Women’s Conference and Expo is one of our most popular events and is growing year-by-year. “Its success is a testament to the volunteers who are truly committed to helping women throughout the community. I applaud them for organizing this worthwhile event.”

Winning Character In an effort to further support the school’s character education program, W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District was selected as a winner in the Safe Fleet 2016 United Against Bullying Grant Program.

Mount was honored for its PBIS – positive behavior intervention supports – program called Mount SCORES. Within the program’s matrix,

the school works to promote the expectation that students will be self-controlled, caring, open-minded, respectful, encouraging and safe. The monies received through the grant will be used to purchase reinforcers as well as partially fund a school mascot to assist with reinforcing expected behaviors.

The school’s principal Kathryn White and social worker Sherri Lennon were instrumental in

submitting the school’s grant application.

According to the organization’s website, over 100 applications were received from school districts, school transportation departments, and nonprofit organizations.

Safe Fleet donated a total of $55,000 to applicants who presented the best strategies to stop bullying and inspire kindness in their communities.

Honors for RP As a result of their scholastic capabilities, 69 Rocky Point High School students have been named Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. These honorees include current seniors and members of the Rocky Point High School Class of 2016.

Students earned these awards in various categories based on the number of AP exams taken and their scores on those exams.

The distinction of National AP Scholar, which honors students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams, was given to Matthew Brewer, James Gohn and Louis Herman, all members of the Class of 2016.

Fifteen students were named AP Scholars with Distinction, as they received an average score

of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

With average scores of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams, 15 students were named AP Scholars with Honor. Having earned scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams, 36 students were named AP Scholars.

Summer Music

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Chris Mannarino experienced a college-level music program offered through SUNY Fredonia’s Summer

School for the Arts Program.

To gain entrance into the prestigious program, Mannarino was required to participate in a challenging

vocal audition process.

Through the four-week program, he studied music theory and learned intensive vocal techniques while singing in the program’s choir.

“This program was a great experience,” said Mannarino. “I learned a lot and made many new connections.”

Mannarino, who has been singing since the age of 7, also plays the drums, keyboard, guitar and bass.

In addition, he participates in theater productions at the Smithtown Performing Arts Center.

Three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors in the Port Jefferson School District - Chiara Rabeno, Anita Rescia and Amanda Sarubbi - have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program as a result of their outstanding scores on the qualifying exam.

The seniors are among approximately 34,000

Commended Students throughout the nation recognized for their exceptional academic promise. To earn the title, they placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the PSAT. Rescia is a member of the high school’s Latin Club, Environmental Club and National Honor Society and intends to

study languages in college.

Rabeno, who plays field hockey, softball and basketball and is a member of the school’s Latin Club, Environmental Club and Science Olympiad Team, plans to begin a pre-med tract next fall. Sarubbi, who also plans to study pre-med, is a captain of the school’s Mathletes team, captain of the varsity swim team and secretary of the jazz band.

INTRODUCING THE ENTIRELY NEW 2017 LINCOLN MKZ.

To help earn their Bronze Award, Rocky Point Middle School sixthgraders and Girl Scout Troop 2289 members Samantha Amalfitano, Lilyanna Astarita, Felicity Monaghan and Rachel Versheck crafted a student bench for their school building.

Using nearly $200 that

they raised by collecting and exchanging recyclable bottles, the students worked throughout the summer to complete the project. They worked collaboratively as they learned how to use power tools, sand, stain and vanish the wood.

The bench and several decorative flowerpots were

placed outside the cafeteria at the end of September.

The students hope that the completed project will provide their peers, especially those on medical restrictions, with a comfortable place to sit outside during lunchtimes and inspire others to give back to the community.

Award Winning Artists Four Minnesauke Elementary School talented student-artists – Julia Horan, Alexa Horan, Keira Sabbatini and Sarah Wood – earned international acclaim during the 10th annual Interdependence Hexagon Project Exhibit hosted this September.

Julia was awarded “Most Effective OverAll Interpretation;” Alexa earned the title of “Most Relevant to Interdependence Theme;” and Keira Sabbatini and Sarah Wood each won honorable mention in the “2-D Mixed Media” category.

According to the organization’s website, the project calls for students to create art based on a global issue within the infinitely inter-linking shape of a hexagon, a metaphor for interconnectedness. This year’s theme was “We Do: Acting Interdependently.”

CPR Training After speaking with the students about the importance of the training, David Sterne, a community member and district manager for the Setauket Fire District, along with volunteer firefighters and health teachers worked

Ward Melville High School students in the Three Village Central School District learned how to preform handsonly CPR and use an AED machine during a workshop conducted in the school’s health classes.

The All Long Island Car and Motorcycle Enthusiasts Club and Brookhaven Youth Bureau are teaming up to help families in need on Sunday, November 6th, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This annual event is sure to be fun for the entire family, as club members will be displaying their cars and motorcycles at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville in an effort to raise donations for families in need through the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program.

Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the Thanksgiving Food Drive and new, unwrapped toys for children to open during the holiday season.

Last year’s event raised $3,200 for turkeys and non-perishable food, and more than $10,000 worth of toys. Admission is free and cash donations are accepted. There will be no judging of the vehicles and trophies will not be rewarded. Free hot dogs and beverages will be served and there will be live music and entertainment throughout the day. Feastival Raises Funds

The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th. Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969.

This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests.

Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine,

sausage and peppers, an Italian kitchen and Gourmet Deli, a specialty oyster bar, Zeppolas and Cannolis, gourmet pizza and craft beer. In addition, there were contests for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin” on every hole.

Brown’s Automotive Group also sponsored a “Hit the Green” challenge on every par 3, a putting contest on the 19th hole and a holein-one prize car.

This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been continual supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. Event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi, were close friends for several years. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism.

The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection

with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with event cochairman Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann FuocoSantos, who attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21. The Fuoco family established the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival in 1969 to raise funds for the camp, to ensure that people like Beth Ann are provided the opportunity to have memorable and educational summer experiences.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity and independence in a safe and supportive educational environment.

Throughout the program, campers participate in activities such as arts and crafts, music, cook-outs, swimming, and boating.

Her experience as a preschool teacher will prove to be instrumental as well, as she will be working as the liaison for the Three Village Pre-K program.

“I am very excited to serve as the new assistant principal at Nassakeag Elementary School,” said Ms. Pickford. “It is a privilege to join the team of talented teachers and support staff at Nassakeag. As the year progresses, I look forward to meeting students and families as well as becoming a member of the Three Village family!”

program’s website, 1.6 million students entered this year’s competition by taking the PSAT/ NMSQT and only about 16,000 students earned the status of semifinalists.

With this honor, these students now have the chance to continue in the competition and compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million.
