Port Jefferson Employees Honored For 25 Years Of Service

At the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education meeting on Sept. 12, an elite group of employees were honored for the milestone of working in the district for 25 years.

Dr. Robert Neidig, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, addressed the six who have dedicated their

careers for the betterment of Port Jefferson students and the school district mission and vision.

He congratulated elementary music teacher Mark Abbonizio, middle school special education teacher Monica Consalvo, maintenance mechanic Willians Corona, elementary teaching assistant Vicky Jobst and

Great libraries build communities. This is just one of the approaches that Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School’s new library media specialist Sarina LatorreSicurella looks forward to promoting as she works with the K-2 students in Rocky Point.

“I seek to create a dynamic environment that stimulates wonder and curiosity and allows learners the freedom to explore and grow,” LatorreSicurella said. She will aid students in developing skills

that incorporate literacy appreciation, research, technology, library use and, of course, finding some new favorite stories and authors.

Latorre-Sicurella received her undergraduate degree in comparative literature, cinema and cultural studies from Stony Brook University and a Master of Library Science from Queens College. She is certified as a public librarian professional and a school media specialist and holds individual pathway to certification:

school librarianship from SUNY Buffalo. She is a member of the Children’s Librarian Association of Suffolk County and the New York Library Association, Youth Services Section. She joins Rocky Point with student teaching experience from the Longwood Public Library and Miller Place High School and 14 years of professional experience as a youth services librarian at the Port Jefferson Free Library.

Miller Place High School Named An Athletic School Of Distinction

NYSPHSAA Names Miller Place Among Its Exclusive 2022-2023 School Of Distinction List

Miller Place High School was recently named a 20222023 School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The recognition was bestowed on only 20 schools throughout Suffolk County. The list included 35 schools throughout Long Island and 84 throughout the state. Miller Place earned the honor for the third consecutive year and fifth time over the past seven years.

Miller Place High School qualified for the esteemed

School of Distinction status by having its Varsity teams reach NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team status throughout the course of the school year. Such teams were honored for having 75% of the participating Varsity athletes on each roster achieve a 90+ GPA for their season of participation.

“This is a proud opportunity for me to recognize the hard work and efforts of our studentathletes from the 202223 school year,” said Ron Petrie, Administrator for Physical Education,

Health, Athletics, and Intramurals. “This is a true reflection of the quality and commitment our students have to being the best versions of themselves.”

Attend For A Cause: It’s More Than Just Another Fall Festival

On October 14, 2023 from 10-3, (rain date is Sunday, October 15), on the grounds of the Sunshine Prevention Center, something special is going to happen: Families from all over Long Island will attend Sunshine’s 1st Fall Family Festival. They will be treated to vendor tables—crafts, business and agency exhibitors, fun activities, including bouncy houses, raffles and silent auction items—all in the name of “fun for a cause”.

As Robert H, Cohen, attorney and president of the Sunshine Board of Directors states: “I am proud to be part of the Sunshine team. They

do wonderful work with people who have not achieved a lot of success. They turn these kids around.”

Bob has generously donated 5 sports memorabilia items for the silent auction. In the 1960’s and ‘70’s, he used to collect baseball cards and when his son was interested, he found that his father had saved many of them. In addition, he became interested in collecting other items related to baseball and the following items will be featured in the silent auction.

In addition, other items are being donated by Joanne Wilson, another Board

member.

All monies raised go to the Sunshine Prevention Center’s programs.

Sunshine works with educators and professionals from area school districts, like Comsewogue, Middle Country, Three Village, Patchogue-Medford and others. Sunshine Alternative Education Center, is a NYS Department of Education accredited school program.

Boys And Girls Lacrosse Teams Represent Comsewogue At Annual Benefit For Tunnel To Towers Foundation

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk takes place the last Sunday of every September in New York City and symbolizes

the late firefighter Stephen Siller’s final footsteps from the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. The event serves as a tribute to everyone who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It began with 1,500

people in 2002 and has since become one of the most prominent 5Ks in the country. All proceeds go toward the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is committed to fighting veteran homelessness,

provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children, and builds accessible homes for injured veterans and first responders.

Long Island’s south shore played host to the inaugural edition of Northwell Health IRONMAN® 70.3® New York – Jones Beach triathlon on Saturday, Sept. 23. Participating athletes were treated to an IRONMAN 70.3 journey highlighted by the worldfamous Jones Beach State Park, home of 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean. In the age group men’s race, Ross Baldwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), in the 35-39 age group, was the first to cross the line with a time of 3:40:47. Evelyne Papillon (Trois-Rivieres,

Quebec, Canada), finished first in the 40-44 age group, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:32:44. More than 2,300 athletes from 46 U.S. States and 43 countries, regions and territories travelled to Long Island to compete in the inaugural race that began with a shortened 750-meter swim in Zach’s Bay just outside the famous Jones Beach Amphitheater before embarking upon the 56-mile closed bike course on the flat and fast Wantagh Parkway. The 13.1-mile run course took athletes onto the boardwalk alongside the Atlantic Ocean with an

unforgettable finish line on the beach.

Due to the weather conditions on race morning, IRONMAN and local officials made the decision in the interest of athlete safety and the strict benchmarks in place, the swim portion of IRONMAN 70.3 New York triathlon shortened to a 750-meter (0.46 mile) swim.

The Northwell Health IRONMAN 70.3 New York –Jones Beach will return to Long Island’s South Shore on Sept. 28, 2024. General registration for the 2024 edition will open on Oct. 4, 2023.

“Every Picture Paints A Story” – Works Of Art By Long Island Based Noted Illustrator And Cartoonist Mickey Paraskevas To Be Displayed At The Reboli Center Through November 5

The Reboli Center’s new exhibit is comprised of almost 365 paintings by Michael (Mickey) Paraskevas that he did each day in 2022. While his work was included in the 2020 exhibition of “Dan’s Covers” show, this is

the first time that he is doing a solo exhibit at the Reboli Center. “I am very proud of my association with this art center and it’s a beautiful location,” said Paraskevas.

Mickey’s new exhibit features vibrant landscapes,

animals and still life paintings. During the last 12 years, most of his work has been digital, be it a children’s book or an animated series. Although he loved what he was doing, he missed the physical act of painting. He said, “I missed getting up every morning and simply applying paint to paper or canvas. I was burned out working on the iPad. He considered painting on a small scale so he could get the desire to paint out of his system. On January 1, 2022, he made New Year’s resolution -a painting a day for the month. He took several small 8x8 canvases and started a project that was to last a month. He thought that was a realistic goal – he would have 31 small paintings by the end of the month. Then he thought that maybe he could do this longer and if he did it for

Comsewogue High School Named An Athletic School Of Distinction

Comsewogue High School has been named a School of Distinction by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The NYSPHSAA recently released its 2022-2023 Schools of Distinction list, which named Comsewogue among only 20 schools throughout Suffolk County. The list included 35 schools throughout Long Island and 84 throughout the state. Comsewogue earned the honor for the second consecutive year.

Comsewogue High School qualified for

The teams were honored for having their studentathletes excel athletically and by earning a collective grade point average (GPA) of 90 percent or higher during their respective sports seasons.

“I am thrilled with our achievements in the classroom and on our athletic fields. Earning the status of a NYSPHSAA

On September 9, from 6:30pm – 8:30pm there will be an opening reception with the artist. Guests will have an opportunity to view the show and meet Mickey. In addition, he will be back at The Reboli Center for the Third Friday on September 15 from 6:30pm – 8:00pm to discuss his painting a

day project and to answer questions. No reservations are required for either event, but seating will be limited, and refreshments will be served.

Mickey Paraskevas is an American illustrator, cartoonist and animation producer, who is best known for co-creating with his late mother Betty the animated children’s television series, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast. Together they authored more than 20 children’s books. He has worked for 32 years for Dan’s Papers, and has had about 120 cover paintings for the publication. In addition, he has been featured in Time, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Town & County, Esquire, The Washington Post and The New York

Times. He obtained his bachelor’s and Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts.

In collaboration with his wife Maria, they are trying to reboot Maggie for a new audience. They are also working on a variety of animated prime-time projects.

The Reboli Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am - 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 5pm. There is no admission fee to the Center, which is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook. For more information, please call 631751-7707
