Stony Brook School senior Margaret DuRuggiero recently participated in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) STEM Day, which took place at the CIA headquarters. The NSHSS is a program that clings to the mission of the Nobel Prize and supports high school students as they prepare to become the leaders by connecting them with scholarships, leadership opportunities, and more. Out of hundreds of applicants, Margaret was one of only 30 students in the country selected to participate in the program’s STEM Day. Throughout the day, students met with STEM professionals in the CIA, had the opportunity to network with current CIA interns, and participated in some hands-on STEM labs. Students worked on programming apparatuses such as LCD screens, fingerprint scanners, and a computerized voice

to greet the user as they were scanned in by the aforementioned technology. Margaret has been interested in the field of STEM for most of her remembered life, and is fascinated with its endless possibilities. She also writes for and runs an online, peerreviewed scientific journal called “Emerging Female Scientists”, and had the opportunity to share some of her findings with her peers, the chaperoning faculty, and members of the NHSS. “The percentage of girls dropping out of math and science is huge,” said Margaret. “There are a lot of factors —

lack of female mentors, feeling outnumbered, not feeling smart enough; the list goes on. Part of the motivation behind creating this journal is to show other high school girls that they are capable of continuing on in the STEM field — that they are capable of being just as successful as men.” Margaret will have the opportunity later this month to take over the NSHSS’ Instagram account, and will be documenting a day in the life of a Stony Brook School student. Additionally, another edition of her journal will be published in the late fall.

The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put on the haunt are volunteers. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The event will run on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

You can benefit Melissa’s Wish in various ways. Of course you can attend one of this year’s Haunted House events (all proceeds will benefit this organization), you can donate on their website or you can become a sponsor of their

organization. Additionally, you can become involved with the Cemetery of Lost Souls in many ways. They are actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing (to help with social media marketing), Scare Team Members (actors to help put on the event), Security (watching over the event and making sure all guests are safe), Bake Team Members (to donate baked goods to sell at some of the events) and lastly, they are looking for an Electrician (to volunteer a few hours to help finalize last minute details for the event). Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. This organization is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event. All sponsors will be listed on their website and will be given the opportunity to have their logo and or a small clip on a big screen at the event in front of the waiting line. This will be on a loop, so there is lots of exposure to be had! Lastly, donations are welcomed at any time on their website. workshop on the recorder to Lisa Scrom’s third grade music classes. Performing on various sized instruments, the students learned both the

Fourth grade art students learned about mandalas and discovered why and how they’re made, the messages of love, unity and tranquility they promote, and how they can inspire their art. Older students worked collaboratively to design a Peace Day poster with a goal of promoting wellness and peace through their artwork by including powerful quotes about peace and a visual design that would catch a viewers’

Students in the high school broadcasting class interviewed classmates and teachers about what world peace means to them; peaceful music came over the loudspeakers between class periods and hot chocolate sales with cups designed with wellknown quotes from world leaders were designed by foreign languages classes. On Saturday, September 14th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and Legislator Kara Hahn joined elected officials, community organizations, and residents at the 6th Annual Port Jefferson Dragon Boat Race Festival hosted by the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce at the Mayor Jeanne Garant Port Jefferson Harbor Front Park. Dragon boat racing is

based on an ancient Chinese legend and is traditionally used as the basis for annual water rituals and festival celebrations, and for the traditional veneration of the Asian dragon water deity on the fifth day of the the fifth lunar month. After the races, it is customary to spend the remainder of the day observing street theater, traditional Chinese dance performances, martial arts and other cultural demonstrations.

The chamber included traditional Chinese painting, origami, and other Asian arts and traditions as part of this year’s program. “I would like to thank the Village of Port Jeff, the Port Jeff Chamber, and their sponsors for hosting this event and for bringing such a vibrant and rich tradition to the community,” said Legislator Anker.
