The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction.

The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island.

After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction.

They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach.

“The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.”

“It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. We will continue with these walks and our other foundation activities until we see a marked improvement

in the heroin and opiate problem that continues to affect our communities.”

Odds & Ends the television is an ideal way to decompress.

With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials.

Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder?

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know…

But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next.

Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood.

There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life.

It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with.

Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of

To earn the Gardener Badge, a Girl Scout must visit a garden, explore garden design, find plants that will grow together, experiment with seeds and help with a community garden. Applied Math each group’s approach to the problem varied, many began by first finding the rise and run of the hill or the angle formed by a line from the top to the bottom and then used basic trigonometry skills to determine the other.

From there, they were able to successfully determine the slope.

After each group completed their

measurements, Mr. Rand demonstrated how surveyors use a tripod and scope to compete the same task and provided the students with the chance to test this method.

The reinforcement of these mathematical skills will aid the students in the future, as now they will be working to find the slope of a line on any curve.

Ibuki Iwasaki and Luigia Than, two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors in the Port Jefferson School District, have qualified as semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students, who have shown outstanding

academic talent, are among 16,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

They represent the top 1 percent of students from across the country with the highest scores on the qualifying

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

These academically talented students took the qualifying test in 2016 along with approximately 1.6 million other juniors from across the country.

They are now in the running for scholarships

worth more than $32 million.

Both young ladies are accomplished and wellrounded students. Than plays cello, Iwasaki plays violin – and each are proud of the scientific research experiences they took part in over the summer. Than learned coding as part of

her work at the Garcia Center for Polymers at Stony Brook University and Iwasaki analyzed data on cosmic rays at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

An additional four seniors from the high school were recognized by the NMSC as Commended Students for their performance

on the qualifying test and their exceptional academic promise. They are Eli Doyle, Matthew Pitko, Joseph Samara and Michael Smith.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring of 2018.

The play is a very truthful show involving modern day issues that affect a large majority of teens today, including dyslexia, anxiety, ADD and stress. This is the Long Island premier of the production and a current Ward Melville High School senior helped to enhance the play by authoring 20 original narrations for the show.

A $10 donation per family will be accepted for an admission fee during the evening performance.

the school’s Lucy Calkins Units of Study for writing and reading, the students created “All About Me” books after reading a folktale about Mr. Appleseed and closely studying a variety of apples.

They learned how apples grow, taste tested four types of apples and created

original pieces of art using the core of a cut apple.

Additionally, tying into the math curriculum, each student voted for their favorite type of apple and collectively worked as a class to create a bar graph visually depicting the top choices in the class.

AP Scholars As a result of their scholastic dedication and performance, 25 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in the Port Jefferson School District have been honored by the College Board as AP Scholars.

The designation was given in recognition of each students’ demonstration of exceptional college-level achievement through their performance on national AP exams. Of the 25 students, five were named AP Scholars, 10 earned the recognition of AP Scholar with Honor, and 10 were named as an AP Scholar

with Distinction.

To earn a Scholar recognition, students are required to score a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams; to be recognized as a Scholar with Honor, students must earn a 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams; and for a Scholar with Distinction award, students must receive an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Arts in Education School district staff who attended the first annual Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts-in-Education (AIE) Advisory Council meeting played lollipop drums, learned how to do Dot Painting the Aboriginal way, play a Didgeridoo (the world’s oldest wind instrument), were inspired by a poet/ author/motivational speaker, and interacted with some common and not-so-common animals.

Administrative Coordinator Loretta Corbisiero said, “What better way to experience Arts-in-Education than to experience Arts-in-

Education.”

Corbisiero provides a taste of Arts-in-Education programs at her meetings to show how they have the power to enhance core curriculums and help students develop on many fundamental levels such as creativity, improved academic performance, motor skills, confidence, visual learning, decision making, perseverance, focus, collaboration, and accountability.

Sampling the programs presented at the meeting such as A Taste of Australia, Hip Pickles Percussion Ensemble, Petland Discounts -Traveling Pets

Program, and Laugh-A-Lot Poetry is beneficial to the AIE Coordinators because they get to personally immerse themselves in the experience of learning and get a firsthand account of how the arts can make a subject come alive.

An educator shared that the experience was inspiring and she came away with great ideas.

Another stated that she understands how the Artsin-Education programs can be integrated into core curriculums and she’s going to bring all the ideas back to her district and share them with her colleagues.
