Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years.

Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky.

I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us.

Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back?

Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring.

So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

Saving Teen Lives The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Thursday, September 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s substance abuse and addiction programs for teens. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Beach Club for a delicious dinner.

At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having an adolescent with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community.

LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s

With the flip of a switch the Port Jefferson Village Hall tree will be illuminated in pink lights on October 1st, marking the official kick-off for John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s monthlong Paint Port Pink breast cancer awareness campaign.

Mayor Margot Garant and Mather Board Member Judith Fortunato will do the honors at the Village Hall event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. At the same time, Village Hall, Theatre Three, the Port Jefferson Ferry Terminal and more than 60 local businesses will be awash in pink light.

The water in the downtown

fountain will be “pinked” with environmentally safe dye, and the lawn at Village Hall will be filled with plastic pink flamingos as cheerleaders from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School launch their “flamingo flocking” campaign to raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center.

Paint Port Pink is presented by Astoria Bank with the support of North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates, Long Island Physician Associates, LI Anesthesia Physicians, People’s United Bank and Suffolk Plastic Surgeons.

The month-long outreach

will distribute breast cancer information, raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center and increase breast health awareness throughout our community with the cooperation of the sponsors and the Village of Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson School District, North Shore Art Guild, Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations.

All money raised will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center Fund for Uninsured.

Hispanic Heritage Month Town of Brookhaven’s Hispanic Advisory Board will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Friday, October 9th, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. The event will feature the presentation of Academic Achievement Awards, community honorees, performances and a cultural food tasting.

Hispanic leaders from the community who are role models to our youth. The Brookhaven Town Hispanic Advisory Board, which is the first of its kind for Brookhaven, was established in 2013 to help improve cultural understanding between the Hispanic community, civic and business leaders, Brookhaven government and

town residents. The mission of the board is to discuss and address issues of importance and relevance to the Hispanic community and make recommendations regarding proposed legislation to the Brookhaven Town Board.

In addition, they help to promote Hispanic business development and provide needed information, enabling them to have equal access and opportunity to contracting and procurement in Brookhaven.

Athletic Distinction For the third year in a row, the New York State High School Athletic Association has presented a Scholar-Athletic Team School of Distinction Award to Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

To earn the award all 25 Port Jefferson varsity teams met the criteria of holding an above 90 percent team GPA for the 2014-2015 school year.

athletes, parents, teachers and coaches for stressing the importance of hard work in the classroom, as well as on the fields,” said Debra Ferry, the district’s athletic director.

Student Spotlight THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE SUBMITTED BY: SILVANA LOFRIA, AGE 16, HAUPPAUGE HIGH SCHOOL

The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement.

Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole.

But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all.

Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages.

Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate.

Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school.

Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore.

No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable.

To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children.

And we can all do it together.

He is also a member of the Latin Club and earned a perfect score on his last two National On Saturday, September Latin exams. Historical Society Gala held at the St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

Since its inception in the 1960’s, the Historical Society has worked with the community to identify, maintain, preserve, and celebrate the rich traditions, culture, homes, and buildings of the Three

Village area. The Society has become an integral piece of the community.

Residents and visitors rely on the Society to provide information and exhibits that share the area history while also providing entertaining events.

A Student Voice as a voice of his peers this year as he joins the Port Jefferson Board of Education in the role of student representative.

Caltagirone, who was elected by his peers at the end of 2014-15 school year, will serve as a liaison between students and the Board during their monthly meetings.

“In my position, I hope Earl L. Vandermeulen to be able to express High School senior Nick students’ point of views Caltagirone will serve and any concerns they may

have,” he said.

In addition to serving as a non-voting Board of Education student representative, Caltagirone is a member of the high school’s student government and plays varsity football, wrestling and lacrosse. He is also a New York State ScholarAthlete honoree.

In late August, several Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff members attended a Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) certification course to learn how to identify the warning signs and risk factors for mental health challenges among adolescents.

YMHFA is a nationally recognized, evidence-based course that offers a fivestep action plan to support adolescents showing signs and symptoms of a mental health concern or an emotional crisis.

Lynn Russo, a transition specialist at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in ESBOCES, said, “We registered to take this course because we recognized our need to identify and support our students who may be experiencing a mental health challenge.”

ICC serves students with disabilities in career education programs. They develop technical and academic skills, social skills, and problemsolving skills; all the tools to be successful as they transition into competitive

employment. Russo said, “We know that mental health and academic performance are linked, so we need to have the competencies to detect and support our students struggling with mental health issues.”

Attendees engaged in role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis, select interventions and provide initial help, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s select choir paid tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th by giving a moving performance during the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual 9/11 memorial service.

by music teacher Jessica Pastor, performed The Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America during the somber ceremony. The event was attended by members of the community, the Port Jefferson School District’s administration and Board

of Education, as well as Senator Kenneth LaValle.

The Port Jefferson School District commends students Regan Byrne, Samantha DiCarlo, Maggie Johnston, Olivia Schlegel and Sophia Wennerod for their musical tribute.

Simply the Best In recognition of their exceptional achievement on national AP exams, several Earl L.Vandermeulen High School students have earned the title of Advanced Placement Scholar.

In total, 23 students were named AP Scholars; seven earned the recognition of AP Scholar with Honor; 25 were named as an AP Scholar with Distinction; five were ranked as a National AP Scholar and one student was recognized with an AP International Diploma.

To earn a scholar recognition, students are required to score a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams; to be recognized as a Scholar with Honor, students must earn a 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams; for a Scholar with Distinction award, students must receive an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams; and to be named a National AP

Scholar, students must earn an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Students who receive an AP International Diploma must score a 3 or higher on five or more AP exams in four or more subject areas.

The Soldier’s Tale is a dark Faustian fable about a deserting soldier and the Devil who eventually possesses his soul. The soldier’s violin becomes a symbol of both the soldier’s soul and the Devil’s wiles.

The story is based on an old Russian folk tale but the music is far removed from Russian traditionalism, making it a lesson for all cultures and times.

On August 30th, eighty-six bicyclists took part in the First Annual North Fork Bike Ride for Alzheimer’s in support of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC). After an early morning check-in at Greenport High School, cyclists embarked on a 25-mile, 50-mile, 75mile, or 100-mile loop along the North Fork.

Scenic rest areas included Goldsmith’s Inlet Park and Harbes Family Farms, where participants stopped to relax and refuel before culminating their rides back at the school.

Groups of cyclists took off intermittently. Fruit, bagels and refreshing drinks were offered at each rest stop along the route.

Participants who raised $500 or more received a purple jersey. Every cyclist who raised $350 or more received a commemorative medal from ADRC. “This is a first-time event that has helped support the mission of ADRC, which is to fund local research to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and to provide support programs and services for individuals and families coping with a diagnosis of the disease,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director and CEO of Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. “I am very pleased with the success of the fundraiser and we all certainly want to thank everyone who came out to support this event.”

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) was involved with the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon on many levels.

A career and technical education facility in Oakdale was used as the Emergency Command Center, Culinary Arts students prepared and served food at the command center, a former student and Fire/Rescue 9-1-1 operator manned the Major Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV) at the command center, and several employees ran in the race.

On Sunday, September 13th, while over 3,600 runners gathered at Hecksher State Park for the start of the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon, members of the Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services (FRES) set up an Emergency Command Center at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) on Locust Ave. FRES personnel and emergency responders were on hand to respond to any emergencies and work with local, state, and federal officials.

ESBOCES Plant Facilities Administrator Keith Anderson said, “The Suffolk County Executive’s Office chose MTC because it suit their needs.

Logistically, the facility is close to Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway.

They had ample space to stage their equipment because MTC has multiple parking lots. In case of any emergency, it could be used as a shelter because the facility has several hundred rooms.”

Former ESBOCES graduate Joe Wixted, class of 1984, manned the MERV parked in the front of MTC. Joe began his vocational education in computers at ESBOCES but ultimately became a Fire/Rescue 9-1-1 operator for

Suffolk County. He said, “For large scale emergencies, this unit provides a huge benefit to our area. It’s equipped with stretchers, monitoring equipment, oxygen, and though we rarely have to activate it, it’s important that we have it to protect our region.”

While Wixted was outside monitoring the MERV, ESBOCES Culinary Arts students were inside. They volunteered to prepare and serve food donated from local restaurants to EMS, police officers, firemen, and local officials at the Emergency Command Center. Chef Matt

Kozak said, “Second year students from Connetquot, Three Village, and Sayville school districts volunteered.

It was a way for them to give back to emergency response workers who have done so much for others. It was nice that we were selected as the site for the Emergency Command Center.”

and Sean Kobarg from Three Village CSD; and Sean Szentamariay, an adult student from Sayville UFSD, prepared hamburgers, hot dogs, and pasta with sauce to over 300 people.

Over at the marathon starting line in Oakdale, five ESBOCES employees challenged themselves to run; two ran to honor special people in their lives.

Teaching Assistant Jill Hamill ran the half marathon with a time of 2:15 and “found it to be a very rewarding experience.” She said, “I ran in memory of my dad, Thomas Hill, who passed away from ampullary cancer.” Hamill’s cross country coach at St. Joseph’s College, Matthew Perry, now an ESBOCES special education teacher, cheered her on from the sidelines.

School Social Worker Karen Audia and Occupational Therapist Keri Schmidt also ran with times of 2:23 and 2:04 respectively, and are in training for the full marathon in NYC in 2016. Special Education Teacher Daniel Bachety also ran the half marathon with a time of 2:18.

Physical Therapist Jennifer NicodemoCapra was honored to be part of the race and highlighted in “Faces of the Race” on the marathon website. Jennifer ran to “honor my mom’s strength to recover from her stroke and to honor all other people who are managing their disabilities with bravery.”

From the students at the Emergency Command Center, present and alumnus, to the employees running, everyone affiliated with ESBOCES was thrilled to be a part of local history at the Suffolk County Inaugural Marathon.
