Eagle Pride Soars Sunny skies and school colors blanketed the Rocky Point High School grounds when the community came together to celebrate homecoming weekend on September 16th-17th.

The celebration commenced on Friday, with a high school pep rally and two athletic contests – the tennis team competed against Bellport and the high school’s junior and senior girls took part in an energetic powder puff football game.

The annual homecoming parade began at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School on Saturday and featured students and staff members from throughout the Rocky Point School District. The theme of this year’s parade was the four seasons and each grade level in the high school created colorful floats while students from the other schools fashioned decorative banners. Marching in the parade were the Rocky Point cheerleading teams and the

marching band, members of the Rocky Point High School Class of 1976 as well as other student organizations, all of which rallied in support of the district’s sports teams.

Despite a tough loss to West Babylon, the varsity football team’s spirit and athletic talents shinned throughout their game.

Eagle pride also ran high during the field hockey, soccer and volleyball games that took place throughout EAGLE PRIDE SOARS - Rocky Point High School’s marching band members posed the day. with Principal Susann Crossan before the start of this year’s homecoming parade.

Pleased to Announce The Port Jefferson School District is pleased to announce that two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors, Xinyi Hong and Richard Liebert, have been selected as semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The seniors are among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide who qualified for the honor

based on their high PSAT scores. They will continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million.

Hong, who intends to study within the field of sciences in college, is a member of the high school’s STEM club, Science Olympiad Team, Environmental Club and National Honor Society.

She also plays the viola and participates in the International Omega program.

Liebert, whose goal is to become an engineer, is a member of the high school’s robotics club, STEM club, Science Olympiad Team and National Honor Society.

He is also a dancer.

The Suffolk County Parks Department is pleased to offer 1,000 additional acres of hunting properties this season which is set to begin October 1st, 2016. These additional properties include parcels in the Towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southampton and East Hampton, bringing the total available acreage to 10,000. By providing safe hunting opportunities, the Suffolk County Parks Department not only meets the diverse recreational interest of its residents, but provides a responsible management tool to control deer populations in Suffolk County.

The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 2009-2013, American fire departments responded to

The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire: Start with the chimney.

Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected.

Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional

chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the

chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents.

Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide

inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years.

Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well.

Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering.

Inspect the damper. A damper is a

valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney.

It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly.

Clear out flammable items.

Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove.

Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames.

Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season.

Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season.

By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.

It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000.

Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School.

Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins.

But for me, it is and always will be, home.

The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed.

Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy.

And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

Scholarship Opportunity In recognition of their academic performance, 15 Ward Melville High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to the program’s website, 1.6 million students entered this year’s competition by taking the PSAT/ NMSQT and only about 16,000 students earned

the status of semifinalists.

With this honor, these students now have the chance to continue in the competition and compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million.

The Miller Place School District recently announced its students returned to school with all of the programs implemented last year and a few more.

The District’s careful budgeting procedures will provide students with the opportunity to continue to participate in the many science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), arts, athletic and other academic opportunities they have in years past. After a summer of “Mad Science,” “Fine Arts,” athletic camps, and Drivers Ed, the District is excited to see what their new and returning students will accomplish.

This year, the District will continue to implement the “Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Read 180,” a reading comprehension program across the elementary, middle and high school levels. The “Read 180” model supports reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills, incorporating whole group instruction, guided reading, and independent reading opportunities.

In addition to Read 180, the District has adopted Math 180, a math intervention model for students at the North Country Road Middle

School. Math 180 follows similar instructional strategies as the Read 180 model.

The District will continue to enrich and encourage students as they embark on the new school year and hopes to repeat some of the achievements of last year. Miller Place High School was named a scholar athlete high school, meaning that each varsity athletic team maintained a grade point average above 93%. In addition, the Miller Place High School music department was recognized last year as a GRAMMY Foundation Semi-Finalist for its outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year.

As a semifinalist, the school was one of 119 schools nationwide in the running to receive a grant to support the music program.

Lessons Put in Motion P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s seventhgrade technology classes have been learning about the complexity of aerodynamics – the study of how air resistance and drag affect an object – through a hands-on experiment.

Using the scientific process, the students created paper hovercrafts,

or skimmers, and tested their travel capabilities by launching them in the hallway. The students then made modifications to the device’s variables – including weight and wing design – to improve their hovercraft’s performance.

The longest distance one traveled was 117 feet.

“This served as a nice

introduction to the effects a design can have on a product and how to best problem-solve solutions,” said teacher Dan Rieckhoff.

“In the coming weeks the class will be working to create rubber band cars, which is a much more intricate project.”

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

As a result of their outstanding Advanced Placement exam scores, the College Board has named 335 Ward Melville High School students AP Scholars. This impressive number includes current students as well as members of the Class of 2016.

The honor is bestowed upon students based on the number of AP exams taken and the scores they received on those tests.

The title of AP Scholar was bestowed upon 104

students, each of whom received scores of 3 or higher on three or more exams; 55 were named AP Scholar with Honors for receiving average scores of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams; 144 were named AP Scholars with Distinction for earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and score of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams; and 30 students earned title of National AP Scholar for

receiving average scores of 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Class of 2016 graduates Alexander Douglas and Amanda Liu were given the high honor of being awarded AP International Diplomas. This was issued in recognition of the students receiving scores of 3 or higher on five or more AP exams in three or more subject areas.

In commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, participating shops and restaurants in Stony Brook Village will be part of a festive Ladies Night Out, Thursday, October 20th, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Annual Walk for Beauty will also take place the following Sunday, October 23rd, and proceeds raised for both events will go toward a targeted research fund at Stony Brook Medicine for Breast Cancer

Research and the WMHO Unique Boutique for prosthesis and wigs.

Ladies Night Out will include live music throughout the village including WALK-97.5, pink cocktails, foodie specials, sales, raffles and more.
