The Youth Board is seeking submissions from students who are currently in seventh through twelfth grade. Submissions will be accepted from September 17th through October 17th. Selected poems will be read by their authors at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, on Thursday, November 29th at 6 p.m.

Every person who submits a poem will be invited to attend the event on November 29th. Each student who submits a poem will receive a certificate from the Brookhaven Town Board.

The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention.

My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old.

When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance.

Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities.

Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth.

In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room.

In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy).

But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

While financial abuse and scams are believed to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help prevent them and protect yourself.

For example, here are some steps you can take: • Plan your financial future with trusted family members, friends and professionals. If managing your daily finances is difficult, consider engaging a money manager.

• Talk with a lawyer about creating a durable power of attorney for asset management, a revocable or living will, and trust and health care advance directives.

• Don’t be pressured or intimidated into quick financial decisions or sign any documents you do not completely understand.

• Never provide personal information (Social Security number, credit card) over the phone unless you placed the call

and know with whom you are speaking.

• Tear up or shred credit card receipts, bank statements, solicitations and financial records before disposing of them.

Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family (NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in flames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill.

Have at least two ways to escape from every room.

Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes.

Conduct practice drills at least twice a year.

2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire.

Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed.

Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Celebrating MRI Innovation

In 1971, Paul Lauterbur, a chemistry professor at Stony Brook University was eating a hamburger at a Pennsylvania restaurant and had a “Eureka” moment about his nuclear magnetic resonance research and how it could potentially be used to image multidimensional objects.

That moment of inspiration advanced his research that led to groundbreaking work toward the discovery of modern MRI imaging in medicine, and a shared Nobel Prize in 2003. Fastforward to 2018, Stony Brook University and the Long Island Section of the Institute of Electrical

and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are recognizing the late Lauterbur’s achievement as an IEEE Historical Milestone.

The ceremony, held at the soon-to-be opened Medical and Research Translation (MART) Building, included the unveiling of a bronze plaque, a presentation

by Stony Brook and IEEE leadership, and discussions about new research involving MRI techniques, such as its use for personalized medicine and brain mapping.

“Quite simply, the MRI is one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook

University. “Few people stop to consider how MRI technology came into existence. But at Stony Brook, we know the story very well. Millions of lives have been saved thanks to this groundbreaking technology.

Lauterbur’s transformative work truly changed the course of modern medicine and trajectory of Stony Brook University.”

Stony Brook continues to build on its history of technical innovation and discovery in medicine.

Five years ago Stony Brook University Hospital became one of the first 10 hospitals in North America to provide simultaneous PET/ MRI imaging for patients.

• Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead.

• Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn

of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

• Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days.

Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

• Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years.

Though it’s a transformative renovation, replacement siding is a significant and potentially expensive undertaking. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to the materials used and their maintenance, longevity, insulation factor, and cost. Many homeowners also want siding that is ecofriendly.

Stucco can reduce air infiltration that causes drafts in a home.

Fiber-cement Fiber-cement is similar to stucco in that it is made from sand, Portland cement, clay, and wood pulp fibers. It can be fire-resistant and insect-proof and will not rot. It’s a stable material that can recover

almost 80 percent of the initial cost, according to the National Association of Realtors®.

Stone This nonrenewable resource can be beautiful on a home and durable, but mining it can impact the environment.

If homeowners can use reclaimed or displaced stone, those are more sustainable options. Manufactured stone, which is cement and other materials molded to look like stone, is also aesthetically appealing and more ecofriendly.

On Monday, October 29th, at 7 p.m., the Port Jefferson Documentary Series will screen, Science Fair, at Earl Vandermuelen High School at 350 Old Post Road in Port Jefferson.

Directed by Christina Costantini and Darren Foster, this documentary film won the first ever Festival Favorite Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, beating out one hundred and twenty three other films.

The film follows nine students and one mentor

from around the globe as they navigate rivalries, set backs and hormones, on their journey to compete against 1700 students from 75 countries at the Intel Science Fair.

Though all are participating for the love of science, we also learn there are underlying influences motivating each of them to pursue their dreams.

How To House-train Your Dog (NAPSI)—If you’re a pet parent to any of the country’s estimated 78 million dogs, here’s how to make house-training easier for both you and your pet.

1. Take your dog to the “bathroom” every one to three hours, as well as after he first wakes up in the morning or after a nap,

after each meal, after being left alone for a stretch of time, and before going to bed.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Teacher Nick DeBlanco at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) understands the benefits of associations with local businesses.

“The partnerships are reciprocal,” said DeBlanco.

“Local businesses may provide my students with training, cutting-edge technology, and sometimes donate new or used equipment so students can engage in hands-on learning. The business capitalizes on the donation because they know we will make good use of

the equipment and they will receive better-trained employees to hire.”

S.W. Anderson Sales, a local business since 1955 with locations across Long Island, recently sent an 18-wheel truck filled with new and used high efficiency air conditioning (AC) units to the MTC campus in Oakdale. S.W. Anderson is a new business and industry partner with the Academy and Mr. DeBlanco’s program.

Mr. DeBlanco met Mike Anderson, president of S.W. Anderson, his sons, Jason and Mike, and Jacqueline Costello, director of marketing in the parking lot of MTC. Students from HVAC, newly certified in using a forklift, assisted in unloading the equipment from the truck.

“The HVAC Academy students will have the opportunity to have real-

world experiences working on equipment that is industry standard,” said Mr. Anderson. “I feel we are helping the future of the HVAC industry because technology has become advanced. Yes, the technicians still use wrenches and screws but there are new skills to be learned related to wiring, sensors, engineering, and computer technology.”

The partnership goal between the Academy HVAC Program and S.W. Anderson is to prepare students for the workforce and empower them to succeed in the global community.

Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2018 to 2026.

Susan White, principal of John Pearl Elementary School, joined students and staff in celebrating Patriot Day on September 12th during an in-school assembly.

Fifth-grade students from Annamarie

Damore’s and Jeanne Cardone’s classes led the attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, dressed in their colorful red, white and blue outfits.

Additionally, the students sang patriotic songs, including “Nothing More”

by The Alternate Routes and the John Pearl School song.

Under the guidance of music teacher Rachel White, Sycamore Avenue School Chorus members

sang a number of heartfelt and inspiring songs.

Additionally, Ms. White performed several songs on her own, further uplifting the spirits of attendees.

Students from Connetquot High School’s phenomenal a capella group “The 7th Street Singers” performed a stunning rendition of the national anthem at the Lakeland Fire Department’s 9/11 ceremony.
