with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the official launch of the “Experience the North Fork by Trolley” shuttle service that will operate for 10 straight Saturdays beginning September 9th and running through November 11th. The scheduled service will be divided into two service phases: Phase one will service the Greenport loop from September 9th to October 7th, and Phase two will serve the Mattituck-Peconic loop from October 14th to November 11th. “We are excited to introduce this new experiential trolley service on the North Fork to serve our residents and visitors,” said Suffolk

Long Island’s leading breast cancer walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, will be held on two dates and at two locations, starting on Sunday, October 15th, at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, and on Sunday, October 22nd, at Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, 121 Speonk Riverhead Rd, Riverhead. “With an estimated 70,000 participants at Jones Beach and several thousand more on the East End, Long Island hosts the largest attended event in the country,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society Communications Director. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. American Cancer Society is there for people in every town affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said Katie Goepfrich of the American Cancer Society. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.” Last year, an estimated 70,000 walkers from across Nassau and Suffolk county raised over $3 million dollars. Making Strides

With so much loss and devastation left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake leaving Texas and its residents a long road of rebuilding and recovery, Homes By Mara Realty Founder, Owner and President Mara Navaretta of Woodbury and her team of agents have launched their own public Hurricane Harvey NonPerishable Food & Paper Goods Collection Drive. Now through Friday, October 13th, people are encouraged to drop off non-perishable foods and paper goods, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper plates, at the designated collection drive box kept by the inside front

door of the agency, located at its new headquarters at 30 Berry Hill Road in Syosset, NY. Collection donation drop off times run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Navaretta and her agents kicked off their collection drive by first making contributions themselves and are now encouraging the Long Island community to join them in donating non-perishable food items and paper goods to help people in Texas who are facing overwhelming loss and destruction. “I believe we all have a responsibility to be mindful

of what is happening around our country and of those in need,” says Navaretta. “What happened in Texas hit home for so many of us as it could have happened to any of us here on Long Island. Whether we have loved ones living in Texas or not, we as human beings need to extend our help and support for others in need in whatever way possible. We invite Long Island residents to make donations to our collection drive so we can extend a helping hand for those in Texas who have lost so much as they begin their long road to recovery. Our goal is to share this experience with our residents and visitors in a stress-free fashion that is important to enhancing tourism in our region.” The trolley service will cost $10 for standard allday pass, $3 for senior citizens, and kids under the age of three ride for free. Customers are encourage to download the “Go North Fork” App to track the location of the trolley. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https://www. hamptonluxuryliner.com/. The trolley services will complement existing transit services such as ferries, the Long Island Rail Road, Suffolk Transit, and private bus services. In addition, they will provide an affordable and reliable connection between the

North Fork’s unique downtowns, businesses and natural assets. Visitors will be able to leave their cars behind while experiencing North Fork wine country and the local farms, parks, B&B and shops that characterize this unique region. The North Fork attracts visitors looking to experience its farms, vineyards, fisheries, restaurants, shopping, and exceptional natural assets, including beaches, historic landmarks, and open spaces. As such, Suffolk County is supporting a $200,000 Empire State Development grant application to extend trolley services in 2018 for a full Spring to Fall season. The application also proposed to extend trolley services into the Town of Riverhead. Suffolk County Economic Development & Planning had been working with multiple partners in the region to help

2001 by giving a moving performance during the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual 9/11 memorial service. The students, led by

music teacher and Port Jefferson volunteer firefighter Christian Neubert, performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.”

Honoring 9/11 In honor and remembrance of September 11th, 2001, students and staff from throughout the Rocky Point School District took time to pause and remember the tragic events of that day during individual ceremonies,

activities and moments of silence. Thanks to an anonymous donor, a new tradition was created in the district this year. In advance of the 16th anniversary of 9/11, the sidewalk in front of Rocky Point High School was lined with many large

American flags. The breathtaking display served as a symbol of the importance of patriotism and was noted by many in the community to be a beautiful tribute to the lives lost.

Civic Engagement assist people affected by Hurricane Harvey. Students and staff are encouraged to donate money to their respective English classes or in the main office through Friday, September 15th. All money raised will be donated to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund. Created by the company’s CEO, Howard Lutnick, in 2001, the organization’s mission is to support victims of terrorism, emergencies and natural disasters, including the recent victims of Hurricane Harvey. According to the relief fund’s website, 100 percent of the contributions will

go as direct financial aid to those in need and they will match up to $5 million of donations made. Many staff members at the middle school wore jeans to school on Patriot Day and each made a $5 donation. The ELA department also hosted a bake sale on September 11th and proceeds will be sent to the relief fund. Online Auction Begins

The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution. The liquidation of assets will be conducted through a series of continuous government online auctions. All sales will be coordinated and overseen by Buffalo, New York based online auction company Auctions International. The auctions will be ongoing and continue until December 20th, 2017 or until all items have been sold. “As of January 1st, the CIVIC ENGAGEMENT - Teacher Allison Giannusa oversaw sales at the Port Jefferson Village will no longer Middle School Patriot Day bake sale. Artists Share Their Talents P.J. Gelinas Junior High School 2016-2017 National Junior Art Honor Society members showcased their artistic skills when they were recently commissioned to create a mural for the Three Village Central School District. The mural, which is

now permanently installed in the seating area of the district’s Human Resources Office, features a view of Stony Brook’s famed Gamecock Cottage and West Meadow Beach. A total of 28 studentartists worked on the piece, each completing a

square for the mural using mixed media and under the guidance of NJAHS adviser Michael Sacco. Special thanks to Gelinas technology teacher Dean Kostis who helped with the framing and assistance on this breath-taking mural.

Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano was selected as the only female student recipient of the Junior Angel Award during this September’s second annual Angel Awards. Madeline was honored

for her efforts in cochairing the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand that she created five years ago with her brother Joseph, a freshman at Murphy. Through this effort, the students helped to rally their peers

from throughout the district and members of the community to raise $20,000 at the lemonade stand this summer. To date, the teen siblings have helped raise more than $36,000 for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The Angel Awards are given to outstanding women in the community who are recognized for their charity work and who combine work, home life and volunteering. The ceremony serves as an opportunity for people to meet these incredibly talented and giving women and at the same time, be in attendance as the community thanks them for their tireless efforts on behalf of others. Hop Fest Set LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. The event will offer sampling of special locally brewed beers made with locally grown and harvested hops, many brewed in small batches for this event only. Plus this year, attendees will also be able to enjoy locally crafted pumpkin beers like the Pumpkin Spice ale from Long Island’s newest brewery, Jamesport Farm Brewery; limited-release seasonal brews like Long Ireland Brewing Company’s Octoberfest, a Märzenstyle lager; or hopped cider from Stowe, Urban Farm Fermentory, Cidergeist, or Indian Ladder Farm Cidery and Brewery, visiting from

the Hudson Valley. The attendees will enjoy an afternoon of beer and cider sampling, hop farming education, and live music. Award-Winning Filmmaker An experimental film created by Jamie Nagel, a junior at Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District, has been selected for this year’s All American High School Film Festival, which will be held in New York City on October 7th.

Jamie’s film, “Youth,” was based off a poem she wrote and will be screened in Times Square as part of the festival. Following the screening, Jamie will attend an awards ceremony and reception at the historical Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

Three Village Central School District student filmmakers have been selected for this high honor for the past several years. Jamie created her film under the guidance of Ward Melville teacher Stephanie DiLorenzo.

COMMEMORATIVE WREATH - Students from the Horticulture Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center expressed their creativity and honored those lives that were lost on September 11th, 2001 with a wreath fabricated from red, white and blue flowers and adorned with ribbons and several American flags. The wreath is on display outside the building in the rock and flower garden also constructed by Horticulture students. The plaque that complements the wreath reads In Memory of All the Lives Lost on September 11th, 2001.

Honoring Victims On September 11th, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright joined with the Three Village and Port Jefferson communities to honor and remember those who perished during the attacks on our nation 16 years ago. The memorial events were well attended by residents, first responders and elected officials. Somber bells, a gun salute, poetry and orchestral music from Port Jefferson High School students served at the Port Jefferson Fire Department at their station house on

Maple Avenue. At 11:30 a.m. there was a silent service at the Brookhaven Town Hall 9/11 Memorial in Farmingville. The Councilwoman laid a wreath at the Setauket Fire Department Candlelight Ceremony in the evening. During the ceremony, Fire Department officials identified the names of those lost from the Three Village community on 9/11; including individuals, first responders, police and firefighters. The event was attended by families of victims, civic and faith based

community organizations. Councilwoman Cartright also visited the Port Jefferson memorial to citizens which includes the names of the nonservice member residents of Brookhaven Town who perished in the September 11th attacks. There the memorial plaques on stone structures list those names, and flanks the center memorial stone listing names of local first responders.
