The Summer 2023 issue features an article written by Sacco titled, “Go Play with your Toys!” which describes a photography lesson that took place during the pandemic in 2020. Meet The Reboli Center’s September Artisan: Ceramist Russel Spillmann

Russel Spillmann has worked in ceramics for more than 50 years, during which time he has participated in many fine craft shows and exhibited at numerous galleries. His work is included in many corporate, private, and public collections. As

a former resident of the Three Village area, he is thrilled to be the Reboli Center’s September Artisan.

Lois Reboli, president and a founder of The Center said, “Russel’s ceramics are just amazing and the colors so magnificent that we are

pleased to have an affiliation with him.”

According to Russel Spillmann, “I work with porcelain for its purity and translucence. It allows one to look into and through the pot, not merely at it.” Through my work, I attempt

to resolve function and beauty into a presence; for it is through presence that beauty suspends the soul in timelessness, and it is here the soul expands to sense more than itself.”

Russel has fond memories of growing up in the area, riding his bike past what is now The Reboli Center and going to the local beaches, where a parade of

porpoises would entertain the onlookers. He relocated to upstate New York where he earned his Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cortland. There he became interested in ceramics as he was inspired by his teacher, John Jessiman, who was instrumental in getting him accepted into the School of Ceramics at Alfred University. At Alfred, he had

the opportunity to study under the esteemed pottery teachers, Val Cushing and Daniel Rogers.

The Reboli Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-5pm and Sunday from 1pm-5pm. There is no admission fee to the Center, which is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook. For more information, please call 631-751-7707.

Miller Place Board Of Education Are Recognized As Champions Of Change By The NYSSBA

The Miller Place School District’s Board of Education was recently recognized by the New York State School Boards Association’s Champions of Change program for its Vending Machine Books for Kindness Initiative.

NYSSBA’s Area 12 Director Catherine Romano presented the Miller Place Board of Education with a celebratory banner at last week’s Board of Education meeting, where she commended the District and Miller Place Parent Teacher Organization for

working together to promote literacy and kindness.

“It’s an honor to be recognized for our book vending machine program and the work our PTO and administration have done to get children excited about reading, while encouraging

acts of kindness,” said Superintendent of Schools Mr. Seth Lipshie. “Thank you to the NYSSBA for recognizing our Board members as Champions of Change and thank you to our PTO for everything you do to support our students.”

The NYSSBA Champions for Change initiative goes to districts with family and community partnerships or collaborations that contribute to a positive student experience and strengthen the bond between the district and community. NYSSBA usually announces seven to eight recipients every quarter and Miller Place is the only school district in Suffolk County to receive this honor in the past half-year.

Last January, the Miller Place School District and the Miller Place Parent Teacher Organization unveiled its book vending machines at North Country Road Middle School, Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School and Andrew Muller Primary School. Each book costs one token, which students earn by displaying good behavior and performing acts of kindness. Earning tokens is built into the District’s existing character education

programs, which reward exemplary students each month.

The Miller Place Parent Teacher Organization donated the book vending machines as part of its commitment to increasing literacy and generating excitement around reading. One of their goals was to keep children reading and ensure they could always have books at home and not just in school or at the library. Their research led them to Inchy, the only book vending machine company in the country.

The PTO purchased the vending machines through the District’s Read-a-Thon and has been stocking them with an assortment of books for students to choose.

The PTO executive board includes Kristin Hennig, Suzanne Cloke, Jackie Maloney, Monique Caccavale, Sharda Soohkdeo, Gayle Mancini and Dawn McCarthy.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION

New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) Case 20-T-0617

On November 17, 2022, the PSC issued a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) to Sunrise Wind LLC (SRW) to construct and operate the Sunrise Wind Cable Project (the Project), which is a 5.2-mile 320 kV DC submarine export cable from the New York State territorial waters boundary to the Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven (the Town), 17.5-miles of 320 kV DC onshore, underground transmission cable to a new Onshore Converter Station (the OnCS) in the Town, and 1.1 miles of 138 kV AC interconnection cable that will allow interconnection with the existing electric grid. The Project will transmit electricity produced by the Sunrise Wind Farm, to be located in federal waters approximately 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, to the Holbrook Substation in the Town.

SRW’s Phase 1 Environmental Management and Construction Plan (Phase 1 EM&CP) was filed approved by the PSC on June 23, 2023. The Phase 1 EM&CP details several categories of Project construction, including the installation of civil works (e.g., splice vaults and duct banks) along certain New York State Department of Transportationcontrolled rights-of-way (the NYSDOT ROW Work) and necessary expansion work at the existing Holbrook Substation (the Holbrook Expansion Work), all of which will be located in the Town (together, the Phase 1B work). The Project’s Phase 1A work, which was previously noticed, remains underway at this time. The Phase 1 EM&CP details the Project design relevant to this phase of construction and provides both typical and sitespecific techniques, procedures, and requirements to be followed in the construction of this phase of the Project by SRW to ensure environmental protection and maintain public health and safety.

Construction of Phase 1B work (i.e., the approved NYSDOT ROW and Holbrook Expansion Work) is anticipated to commence on or after September 15, 2023.
