Making the Shift “Take the first step in faith.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books.

We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity.

The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride.

Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,

overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York.

After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen.

After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must

believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life.

I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure.

I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son.

Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership.

I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

(NAPSI)—If you ever find yourself lying awake at night, you’re not alone— even if no one else is in the room. That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia.

Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive.

As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too.

Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary.

What To Do Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day.

2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold.

3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music.

4. Take a bath before bedtime.

Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Rocky Point New Staff Welcome In an effort to provide new instructional staff with a comprehensive introduction to the school district, Rocky Point recently hosted a new teacher orientation program.

The enthusiastic new faculty members, who will be teaching a variety of

subjects and grade levels as well as offer support services at the district’s four schools, spent the day learning the ins and outs of the school district. Central administrators facilitated the orientation program, which was designed to help the new instructional staff members receive

an extensive overview of Rocky Point’s curriculum, special education program, educational technology resources and policies.

At the end of the program, the new staff met with their building principals and took a tour of their new respective building.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry.

•Keep receipts and check

your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying.

Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases.

• Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security

patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly.

Consider technology to protect against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves.

New Teacher Welcome In advance of the official start of the school year, the Three Village Central School District proudly welcomed 20 new teachers during its recent two-day orientation program.

The program, which was facilitated by teacher mentors Brenda Lamiroult, Leanne Perry and Dawn Alexander, consisted of various activities, informational

pieces and an introduction to the administration and leadership within the district.

Over the course of the program, each teacher received a copy of the New Teacher Handbook, participated in handson technology training, attended an overview on My Learning Plan and learned about district policies and procedures, including

APPR. Additionally, they received an overview on the district’s curriculum and instructional practices, were briefed on the services offered through the pupil personal and special education departments, and learned more about the supports offered through the Three Village Mentor Program.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers.

The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers.

The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers.

It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America.

Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year.

Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service.

the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57).

The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat. net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.)

On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia. Assigned to the Inshore Patrol Squadron in the 5th Naval District, she made several convoy escort voyages between New York, Key West, and Guantanamo, Cuba, during 1942-43.

On the evening of August 5, 1943, the Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia.

The ship’s sonar gear

alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity.

Moments later, the Plymouth was spotted in the periscope of U-566, a German submarine. The sub launched a torpedo at 9:37 p.m.

“The gunboat had made an underwater sound contact while escorting a coastal convoy,” the Uboat. net entry reported. “Just as the ship swung left to bear on the target, she was struck just abaft the bridge. The ship rolled first to starboard, then took a heavy list to port with the entire port side forward of amidships in flames and sank within two minutes.”

Of the Plymouth’s 179 officers and men, only 84 survived. They were picked up in heavy seas by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Calypso and arrived in Norfolk on August 6.

The commander, Lt. Ormsby M. Mitchel, Jr., was thrown violently against a bulkhead by the explosion. He sustained serious injuries, which later required amputation of his left leg. Despite his own condition, he directed abandon-ship operations and remained at his post until the ship went down. Mitchel was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.

The Port Jefferson School District welcomed new members to its educational community during a new staff orientation, setting a positive tone for expectations of professionalism and instruction. Covering a wide range of topics, the detailed program helped to ensure a smooth transition into their new roles in the district.

From becoming familiar with the district’s technology and resources, to taking a bus tour throughout the district and Port Jefferson Village, led by Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Principal Thomas Meehan, the new staff members learned the Port Jefferson

School District’s goal of creating a rigorous learning environment for students that encourages individual interests, talents and potential.

William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva.

The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany.

On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943.

Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York.

The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum.

Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call.

On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave

New Teacher Orientation In preparation for the 2018-2019 academic school year, the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a comprehensive, two-day New Teacher Orientation for its newly hired staff members.

Under the guidance of Superintendent of Schools,

Dr. Lynda G. Adams, the teachers received detailed information about the school district and participated in collaborative planning sessions after engaging in a series of icebreaker activities.

Working as a group, they discussed a variety of

pedagogical strategies and developed the framework for engaging lesson plans.

The workshops also provided them with the opportunity to become well-versed in the schools’ technological resources, and to learn more about the district’s policies and procedures.

Helping Hands Club Gives Back In an effort to ensure that elementary school students have a smooth transition into the new school year, members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club recently filled 42 backpacks to the brim with essential school supplies for each elementary building.

The altruistic students raised money to buy the supplies by selling bottles of water during the Connetquot High School

commencement ceremony, held this past June. Along with the 20 backpacks and supplies purchased by the club, an additional 22 backpacks were donated

by Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children.

The contents of the backpacks consisted of notebooks, crayons, pencils, erasers, folders and numerous other essential classroom items.

were also collected at the Apple Bank located on Veterans Highway in Ronkonkoma, thanks to Georgette Bauch, AVP and Branch Manager.

“A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car than when walking down the

street,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

“Replacing the cabin air filter is a simple way for you and your passengers to breathe easier while driving.”

In addition to trapping pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases, the cabin air filter prevents leaves, bugs and other debris from entering the

heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airflow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems.

Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by corrosion.

Cabin air filters should

not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual.

Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car.

An automotive service technician can locate the cabin filter and replace it according to the vehicle’s

owner manual. Some filters require basic hand tools to remove and install their replacement while others just need your hands.
