The leading edge-lesson was bookended by backto-basics environmental activities at two Nassau BOCES sites. At the start of the academy, students came together at the Brookville Outdoor and Environmental Education Center for a series of team-building exercises designed to encourage trust, collaboration, risktaking, cooperation and problem solving. These skills were reinforced during a daylong wilderness adventure at Caumsett State Park that ended the academy with orienteering, canoeing and a survival exercise.

This August, students in the inaugural class of Long Island’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH) embarked on a diverse educational journey.

On August 6th, 7th and 8th, P-TECH students got a fully immersive crash course in the revolutionary technology of additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3D printing. For three days, these students came together for an interactive 3D printing project at the Institute for Research and Technology Transfer at Farmingdale State College, SUNY. During the threeday workshop, students collaborated to design and assemble a Printrbot 3D printer kit. Each student then used the kit to create his or her own 3D creation. This colorful, cutting edge lesson gave students personal experience with one of the most innovative technologies the world has to offer.

Back from vacation. Back to reality.

And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn.

That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops.

Say it ain’t so.

Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year.

From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling…

Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio.

Grand Entrance The halls of Rocky Point High School shone as the freshman class entered their school for the first time during the new student orientation program.

Ninth-grade students gathered in the auditorium to receive their course schedules and were greeted by building principals

for an informative presentation. A thorough introduction to the high school provided students with a sense of familiarity and a foundation for the character education standards set forth by the district.

The incoming students eagerly awaited their locker assignments and

had the opportunity to explore the wing they will share throughout the school year. Supplies were organized atop locker shelves provided by the PTA and classrooms were toured to give students a preview of where they will learn, laugh and grow for the next four years.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its fall weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plus-year-old camp into a year-round destination for children and young adults with disabilities.

Children and young adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend.

Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and

watching movies.

The weekends available are as follows: September 12th-14th; September 19th-21st; October 3rd5th; October 10th-12th; November 7th-9th; November 21st-23rd; December 12th-14th; and December 19th-21st.

The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session.

Check-in for campers is at 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries.

Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend. During those weekends, the camp will be staffed by Camp PaQua-Tuck’s counselors and the camp nurse.

Green Honor Roll Stony Brook University has been named in Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honor Roll, an annual list that offers a measure of how environmentally friendly universities are on a scoring scale of 60 to 99.

Stony Brook, one of 24 universities to receive a score of 99 (the highest possible score), is among 861 colleges reviewed this year. Selection is based on data collected in its 2013-14 surveys of

schools concerning their sustainability-related practices, policies, and academic offerings.

“Implementing green technologies, resources, and pollutiondecreasing programs is a commitment that Stony Brook University has made to its students, faculty, staff, and they to their campus and to the community at large,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “We are

in great company, and I am proud to say that as we continue to increase our efforts, and as we all continue to reduce our carbon footprint, everyone can take pride and celebrate in this outstanding distinction.”

Stony Brook has a long history of green awareness and environmental sustainability. It began with the Environmental Defense Fund which was cofounded in 1967 by Dr. Robert E. Smolker,

a professor of Biological Sciences at Stony Brook University. Since then Stony Brook signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), created an Office of Sustainability and integrates sustainability into its facilities and services programs.

The University also offers a comprehensive Sustainability Studies Program which offers five majors, six minors and

a graduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems, as well as a Fasttrack BA-MBA. As a recognized leader in the field of sustainability and included in the Princeton Review’s “Guide to 334 Green Colleges” for the past five years, Stony Brook University takes pride in the numerous initiatives that led to the Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honor Roll. Faculty and staff of the Three Village School District convened at Ward Melville High School on August 28th for the annual superintendent’s conference day.

After opening remarks and a welcome from Board of Education President William F. Connors Jr. and Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich, the keynote speaker Lee Cutler spoke to staff. He shared stories from his teaching days, and he stressed that educators need to show courage while working with today’s youth.

“The way you show courage is to find the nontraditional way to

get through to kids,” Cutler said. “My job is to teach others how to be empowered. That’s what you all do in the classroom” When discussing his reasoning for becoming a teacher, Cutler said he wanted to “infiltrate the system and find a way to improve lives.”

“You all have the power to do that in Three Village,” he added.

Following Cutler’s remarks, Jack Blaum, the district’s security and safety coordinator, gave a presentation regarding Emergency Management and S.A.V.E. training. He also discussed the district’s new identification card

system and went through various protocols. After the training, employees dispersed to their respective buildings in the district for faculty meetings.

“In each of us is the ability to inspire students to greatness and to make the impact that will carry hope and promise throughout their lives,” Superintendent Pedisich said. “I look forward to another banner year for us in Three Village.”

The district wishes all faculty and staff the best of luck for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year.

Best Practices District administrators, staff and teachers of the Port Jefferson School District gathered on August 27th and 28th for the district’s annual Superintendent’s Conference Day in preparation for the 20142015 school year. This year’s conference theme was based on best practices.

Delivering the opening address was Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who welcomed the staff back to school and noted the hard work done to ready the district’s schools for the new year.

“The faculty and staff have all worked hard over the summer to make the schools something we can be proud of,” said Dr. Bossert, who also urged teachers to make every moment count as a teaching moment.

provided words of encouragement and Brian Snow, the president of the Port Jefferson Teachers Association, offered thoughts on best practices for having an impact on students’ lives.

Presenting grants for the 2014-2015 school year was Peter Capobianco, a member of the Royal Educational Foundation of Port Jefferson.

Those awarded were: Jonathan Maletta, Trout Conservation Program; Amy McClelland, The Buddy Bench; Megan RothUeno, Forces & Motion with Technology; Gina Santini, Suffolk County Archeological Association Native Life Workshop; and Stacia Schoen, Food for Thought.

The district also welcomed new staff members, including Felicia Demsen, office staff member; Camille Doherty, leave replacement for high school math; Merrill

Dona, office staff; Cathy Hoffman, office staff member for the physical education and athletics office; Megan Lavin, parttime high school English teacher; Jennifer Rodgers, leave replacement for high school guidance; and Thomas Tomaszewski, part-time physics teacher.

In addition, the district recognized staff members with more than 25 years of service. Among those recognized were Kevin Burr, grounds department; Rich Lautato, grounds department; and Joan Tucci, elementary school nurse.

Giving this year’s keynote address was middle school Principal Antonio Santana, who shared some of what he had learned during a workshop he had attended at Harvard University, including how technology relates to education, how students learn and globalization.
