It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing.

Makes for stimulating reading, right?

Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option

of putting a little more thought into it.

Today, not so much.

Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too?

And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails…

Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or

two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation.

Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore.

It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race.

We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

• Group according to schedule. In addition to employing a color-coding system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon.

hook for coats. All sorts of locker accessories exist to customize the interior.

An extra shelf may be helpful for storing books or smaller supplies. Look into a message board or more hooks that can be hung on the inside of the door. Figure out what your child can use to keep items from piling up on the floor.

• Develop a maintenance plan. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. This can be remedied by maintaining a cleaning schedule for a locker. A few minutes each week can keep a locker clean and clear of clutter.

Make School Lunch Healthier

The benefits of a healthy to providing the nutrients diet are clear and well a growing body needs, documented. In addition consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among schoolaged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions.

Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day.

Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired.

As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch.

The Yaphank Historical Society celebrated their 40th anniversary last Saturday, August 23th, by opening the SwezeyAvey House in Yaphank’s Historic District. Legislator John M. Kennedy attended this celebration to present a proclamation to honor the group on this occasion.

As part of this celebration, the Swezey-Avey House, which was the original meeting place of the Yaphank Historical Society 40 years ago, was opened to the public and would now serve as the Yaphank Historical Society’s new headquarters.

The Swezey-Avey House is of particular importance to the history of Yaphank as it is a pre-revolutionary building integral to the mill town since the 1700s. The building will now be used for monthly meetings as well as special events and will accommodate the Yaphank Historical Society’s offices, archives, library, and four exhibition rooms as well as presentations.

The Yaphank Historical Society was established in 1974 to preserve and protect the historic houses of Yaphank and create a historic district on Main

Street.

The Yaphank Historical Society had their first meeting in the Swezey-Avey house 40 years ago, and therefore, one of the exhibits will illustrate the first 40 years of the Yaphank Historical Society. In addition, the other three exhibits will feature the poet Henry P. Kovarik, the Weeks family, and the last exhibit will be devoted entirely to the Swezey-Avey house.

The Right Chemistry

When you speak to Steven Parrinelli today, you sense a smart, confident young man who is carefully selecting his next moves to achieve his goal of a career in medicine.

But as a grammar school student at St. Patrick School in Huntington, Steven hadn’t selected a direction for his life. In fact, according to Steven; “My breakout years didn’t come until I was a high school student.”

Parents That Believed In Catholic School

Like many of the students in Catholic elementary schools, Steven started in elementary school because his parents “are strong believers in Catholic education”.

The elementary school they selected for Steven, St. Patrick’s in Huntington, reinforced the values they lived at home and was able to provide a great deal of individual attention to Steven’s learning needs. Steven remembers St. Patrick’s for its small size, for the many friends he made during his time there, and for the strong feeling of community within St. Patrick Parish and School. “St. Patrick’s provided an excellent educational foundation, and I was a good student, but I hadn’t yet gotten competitive about my grades.” said Steven.

The “Breakout” Years Like the overwhelming majority of Catholic elementary school students, Steven elected to go to Catholic high school and like the most of the students he got his first choice of schools: St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay. It was after mid-term exams in Steven’s first year at St. Dominic High School that he had what he considers his ‘breakout’. The chance to be on the Honor Roll at St. Dominic’s gave him the incentive. The additional recognition each trimester of a Principal’s List Luncheon made it personal. The individual attention he received and the chance to know the teachers from his AP (Advanced Placement) classes personally were some of Steven’s favorite parts of the high school experience.

One Individual

Stands Out While the interpersonal relationships Steven enjoyed with his teachers and members of the administration were powerful incentives, one particular relationship stands out. As Steven puts it; “My Global History and US History teacher, Mr. Drysielski, taught me the most valuable skill I mastered in high school.” “He taught me how to express myself better in writing.”

Steven continued. “Being a better writer has helped me everywhere.”

Looking Forward After looking at various college options, Steven was invited by the University of Scranton to visit their campus. In Steven’s words; “I felt like I belonged here.”

The manageable size of the school, the friendly people, and a strong science program were the ‘selling points’.

That and the Dean’s Scholarship which will fund half of Steven’s college were all considerations in selecting the University of Scranton. “I am considering a career in medicine,” said Steven. “The strong science program at the University of Scranton will help me prepare for medical school.”

My discussion with Steven ended with his rationale for wanting to become a doctor; “I like to help people.”

We couldn’t agree more! Steven is a fine example of the academically prepared and spiritually grounded students graduating from Long Island’s Catholic schools.

Stop World Hunger Registration is now underway for the 34th Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to recreation tennis players from across Long Island.

Seussical Comes To Town Patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and their families enjoyed a unique theatrical experience last week thanks to the John W. Engeman Theater of Northport, LI., which put on a fill-blown production of “Seussical” in the hospital’s lobby.

The production, which featured a multitalented troupe of actors in full Seuss regalia, was sponsored jointly by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the medical center. The hospital’s lobby was transformed into an intimate theatre setting, complete with a working stage and theatrical lighting.

Following the one -hour production, cast members signed colorful playbills designed especially for children. And, for those patients unable to leave their rooms, the entire performance was telecast live throughout the hospital.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to bring

“Seussical” to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, said the theater’s managing director and owner, Kevin O’Neill, while the cast was taking its bows. “Since our earliest history, theater has been the basic form of communication - uniting its audience and providing people with the ability to share their most basic emotions.

“All of us here at the John W. Engeman Theater understand how difficult it must be for children and their families who are unable to experience the wonder of theater while they’re confined in hospital. That’s why we felt it was so important to bring the theater to them. It’s our hope that this is just the first of many wonderful shows for the young patients here to enjoy.”

Kirk Kordeleski, President and CEO, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, added, “There’s nothing like a live show to brighten a child’s day and so we couldn’t be more

delighted to partner with Cohen Children’s Medical Center to help bring Engeman’s “Seussical” straight into the hearts of so many deserving children.”

Also enjoying the show was Kevin McGeachy, Cohen’s executive director.

“We are so grateful to the John W. Engeman Theatre and our good friends at Bethpage Federal Credit Union for bringing this wonderful show to our hospital,” he said. “All you have to do is look at the faces of these children to understand how much this means to them. We look forward to a close association on many more wonderful productions.”

Many of the youngsters in the audience had never seen live theater before. When asked for her thoughts, one young lady (who sat open-mouthed through the entire production) gave the following rave review: “I really like all the actors.

Incoming sixth graders at Port Jefferson Middle School mingled with friends and teachers while enjoying burgers and hot dogs at the welcome back to school barbecue on August 21st at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

The annual event gives students a wonderful introduction to the Port Jefferson School District family, according to Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert. Middle School Principal Antonio Santana presented each of the 100 students with

a Hawaiian lei as they arrived. Parent volunteers prepared dinner.

“The barbecue provides students with an opportunity to not only get socially acclimated, but also meet some of their new teachers and find their lockers,” Santana said.

Start Of Success The smells of summer BBQ filled the cafeteria and students excitedly explored the hallways of their new middle school at Rocky Point’s grade six orientation.

The event, hosted by principal Scott O’Brien and the school’s PTA, welcomed incoming students and their parents for an afternoon of information and socialization.

Students arrived in the lobby to receive their much-anticipated class schedules and locker assignments, the foundation for the upcoming school year.

Reconnecting with their peers, students found their lockers and perfected the lock combination technique.

County Executive Steve Bellone swore in Robert McConville of the Selden Fire Department as the new president of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) on August 22nd at their annual convention in Albany.

“I am incredibly proud to have one of Suffolk’s bravest leading the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York,” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Bob has dedicated his life to serving our community

and is well deserving of this honor. I wish him the best of luck in his tenure as president.”

McConville has been member of FASNY since 1982 and previously served as 1st Vice President.

He also serves in the Suffolk County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Suffolk County Volunteer Fire Department Emerald Society, and New York State and Suffolk County Drill Team Captains

Associations.

McConville joined the St. James Fire Department in 1968 and transferred to the Selden Volunteer Fire Department in 1981.

He served as a captain, treasurer and statecertified E.M.T. in the Selden Fire Department before being elected as Selden Fire District Commissioner in 2009.

Bellone also recognized Bohemia Fire Department’s Thomas Gorman at the convention who was named FASNY’s 2014 Firefighter of the Year.

School Bus Safety Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week.

Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year.

The vast majority of these miles are traveled

without incident.

In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles.

Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun

and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines.

• Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives.

• Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and

other motorists to see pedestrians.

• Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists.

• Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner.

• Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus

should take their seat without making a fuss.

• Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap.

• Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion.

• Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times.

• Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situations that will cause driver distraction.

• Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit.

• Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers.

• Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus.

• Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.

Help Children Make New Friends Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child.

Make School Lunch Healthier Continued From 9 Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition.

Here are some guidelines to follow.

• Offer nutrientdense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer.

• Limit fat intake.

Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources.

• Let kids choose some of their food.

Digital Learning More Prevalent Technology is an important part of many people’s daily lives. Devices like computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games are now so widely used that it’s hard to imagine a life without email, the Internet or text messages.

Even children are proving adept at using technology, which can be a valuable tool for educators attempting to reach today’s youngsters. Digital learning is learning facilitated by technology. Not only can digital learning be done in the classroom, but also it can extend to home life as children continue to explore lessons through hands-on interaction with digital devices.

According to data from Project Tomorrow’s “Speak Up” study, an initiative of the nation’s leading education nonprofit organization, students are frustrated with the lack of technology in their schools and by the lack of sophisticated use of that technology. The study indicates that students want more of the following: • Social-based learning • Tools that increase untethered learning • Development of and connection to a

Enthusiasm about school and an eagerness to learn and discover new things are indicative of kindergarten readiness. A child does not need to have mastery over every skill just yet, but taking the initiative to try and ask questions is a good start to successful learning.

• Does my child want to be independent? The phrases “I’ll do it myself” or “I’ll try” can be music to a kindergarten teacher’s ears. Parents may be in a rush and find it easier to dress kids or get them snacks. But doing everything for kids puts them at a disadvantage.
