Tour Takes Visitors To Seven Jazz Stops In History
The Jazz Loft, 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook, will be presenting two opportunities to take a LIVE tour through jazz history, with its What is JAZZ? Interactive tour on September 10 (starting at 6 p.m.) and October 21 (starting at 7 p.m.). Visitors can arrive at 10-minute intervals-see TICKETS. The tour is comprised of seven stops within the Jazz Loft’s museum and performance space. Each stop in Jazz history is about four minutes, during which patrons will be treated to a brief performance and historical reflection. The entire live music, interactive experience will take about 30 minutes.Guests begin in the main lobby and are welcomed to America by a lone pianist who introduces them to the BLUES. Each stop is limited to a brief historical reflection and a singular tune leaving guests hungry for more. As they continue to the Seaman Gallery, inspired by Jazz photography, guests meet a singer who introduces them to the influence of GOSPEL music in Jazz and they hear a melody reminiscent of a tent revival meeting in the deep south.Asthe tour continues, we stumble into the Milt Hinton Music Room and are ushered into the birthplace of Jazz, New Orleans as we hear the sounds of EARLY JAZZ presented by banjo/bass duo. Each time warp landing leaves no time for lingering and as the map leads from stop-to-stop patrons head upstairs to the Teddy Charles Room. Transported to the windy city of Chicago and the heyday of the BIG BAND/ SWING ERA this stop is fueled by the syncopated vibrations of a clarinet/ vibraphone trio reminiscent of Benny Goodman’s unit (the vibraphone, a 1939 Deagan model actually performed with Goodman and is flanked by photos to prove it!).

LEARNING FIRE SAFETY - Three Village students explored emergency response vehicles when the Setauket Fire Department visited one of the district’s summer programs. Photo courtesy of the Three Village Central School District Students in the Three Village Central School District got a lesson in fire safety from professionals this summer. Members of the Setauket Fire Department visited Arrowhead Elementary School to show off some of its response vehicles and teach students about what to do in case of an emergency.Firefighters and EMS workers first gave students a brief presentation in the auditorium. They encouraged students to call 9-1-1 in an emergency situation and discussed the importance of at-home exit drills. Additionally, the department went over protocols for fire drills in school. One firefighter suited up in all of his gear to show students what a firefighter looks like when responding to an emergency.Following the presentation, students went outside to see a fire truck and ambulance. They went inside the vehicles and checked out the equipment first responders use. The visit from the Setauket Fire Department taught students about fire safety while also teaching them about community.

Bandstand aglow in the history and story of the city that never slept, New York is alive with the energy, pep, vim and verve of BEBOP heralded by a quintet who’s never ceasing and endless energy abounds. Because the story of Jazz is still evolving as told by the singular Avant-guard trombonist in the Loft’s library who shouts and wails the sound of THINGS TO COME and of beyond the now. The tour may seem complete, but this journey of four-minute stops, scheduled so that every group of guests has their own private walk through of the Jazz Loft will certainly leave much to be discussed. Guests can then proceed to the Basie Garden to enjoy some lingering sounds of LATIN JAZZ to debrief their experience. LEARNING IN HARMONY - The annual Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson brought the beautiful sounds of music to the air as elementary and middle school students honed their creative skills. More than 50 student-musicians in grades 3-6 participated in this year’s instrumental camp. Group music instruction on band and string instruments as well as ukulele were taught by music teachers Mark Abbonizio and Christian Neubert. As always, the camp provided an enjoyable and positive way for students to begin to learn to play an instrument or continue their studies. During the summer it is easy for animals to wander and get lost. Through our microchipping and database program, and with the help of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, we can ensure that any lost pets will be found and returned safely to their rightful owners,” said Robert Misseri, Founder and President of Paws of War. The microchips, which are the size of a large grain of rice, are implanted under the animal’s skin behind the shoulder blades. For service animals, microchips are used to provide a permanent form of identification. The microchip can also identify and track an animal’s movements. In the event a service animal gets lost, you can use a microchip scanner to identify the pet’s owner. Through Paws of War’s database, owners can be contacted and have their animals safely returned.
Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services.

More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. When seemingly happy, travel-infatuated veteran CJ Twomey violently ended his own life at age 20, his family was plunged into unrelenting grief and guilt. In a moment of desperate inspiration, his mother Hallie put out an open call on Facebook, looking only for a handful of travelers who might help fulfill her son’s wish to see the world by scattering some of his ashes in a place of beauty or special meaning.
