Longwood Public Library was selected by the New York Library Association’s Public Libraries Section (PLS) to receive a 2016 Building Award. The focus of the award is the impact that a renovation project has had on the library’s ability to provide services to its community.

Emphasis is placed on projects that demonstrate cost effective solutions to space challenges as well as innovative usage of space and floor plans.

“The PLS Board is impressed with Longwood Public Library’s commitment to ensuring that their new facility met the needs of their residents.

Falling Back It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow.

What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one

last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure.

Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.

So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation.

Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance.

It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season.

This is the calm before the storms, the interlude of tranquility.

Hope all my readers have had an enjoyable summer.

Newsweek has named Earl L. Vandermeulen High School as one of the top 500 high schools in America in 2016.

The news organization ranked the high school based on academic achievement on 20142015 state assessments in reading and mathematics, as well as other factors related to college readiness.

According to Kathleen Donnelly, Director of Volunteer Services at Gurwin, “GJ Date is a creative alternative to typical social meet ups. Its mission is to build bridges between generations while simultaneously forging connections between young singles. GJ Date will enable participants to tap into their inner artist while sharing laughs and friendly banter with our residents and other volunteers.”

Donnelly noted the program provides a unique, dual opportunity to enhance the life of a senior through volunteering, as well as promote a safe, lighthearted environment that enables the younger participants to meet new people.

Caroline Reale was born on August 3rd, 1916. She had two brothers and two sisters, all of whom have passed away.

As a child, Caroline enjoyed the outdoors and spending time at her family’s cottage in Rocky Point, with her relatives and friends. She later spent time in Bethel, where her brother had property.

After high school, she went to business school, and after graduating was employed at Flora Mir Candy Corporation (which changed its name to FM Candy Corporation) in Brooklyn during the Great Depression. She worked her way up to Superintendent, where she oversaw the operation of the plant. Caroline

worked there for some 30 years and then retired and moved to Rocky Point. She never married.

She was an avid traveler for a number of years, visiting Canada, South America, Mexico, the Bahamas, Italy and parts of Europe, as well as many states in the U.S. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed swimming, playing tennis, ice skating and horseback riding.

At the age of 85, Caroline moved into Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. She has been in Assisted Living the past two years and says she is fortunate to be there and continues to participate in many of the activities.

Caroline will celebrate her birthday on August 20th at the Main Dining Room at Jefferson’s Ferry where her three nieces and two nephews are planning a lunch for her and about 30 family members.

PRAYER AND PRAISE - On August 17th, the “Prayer and Praise in the Park” event was held at the Town of Brookhaven’s Granny Road Park in Gordon Heights. The Councilman donated more than 30 backpacks filled with school supplies to help with their supply drive for the youth in the community. The event brought residents, local churches, youth groups and community organizations together to help bring unity with prayer and peaceful discussions of encouragement.

Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts budget in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

Music can improve selfesteem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study.

Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives.

According to the Pew Research Center, 56 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 go online several times a day. Teens are not just relying on technology at home or while on the go, but they’re also doing so in school.

Classroom Smartboards: Described as large tablets, smartboards have all but replaced chalkboards and even dry erase boards in many schools. Teachers can present lessons through the display, and students interact with the board to answer questions.

Technology use in the classroom continues to grow as students and educators grow more accustomed to using technology in all aspects of life.

Incoming Port Jefferson Middle School sixthgraders were introduced to their new school at a Welcome Back to School Pizza Social, held on August 18th.

During the gathering,

students met Principal Dr. Robert Neidig, Assistant Principal Claudia Smith and several middle school teachers. They also toured the school and received their locker assignments.

The annual event, which

is organized by the PTSA, aims to help students become acclimated with their classmates and school while also celebrating the start of the school year.
