Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico recently presented Certificates of Congratulations to the members of the William Floyd J.V. Boys Soccer Team for winning the Playoff Champions in the Town of Brookhaven’s Annual Soccer Summer Program.

The team, headed by Coaches Paul Paniccia, Matt Schnauder and Jeff Cronk, won in both the small school and large school divisions.

Historic Map Unveiled On Monday, August 14th, Councilman Kevin LaValle unveiled his Brookhaven Town Third District Historic Map. Councilman LaValle joined together at the historic

Bald Hill School to unveil the map, which is an effort to preserve and honor the rich and important history of this area.

The map was put together with the Councilman

Ranked Among the Finest In recognition of its exceptional educational program, the Port Jefferson School District has been ranked No. 84 in Niche.com’s annual list of best elementary, middle and high schools, as well as school districts. Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco first organized the tournament in 2009 in response to the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, while he was an aide to Legislator Jack Eddington. Since then it has grown to include women’s teams. In 2013, the tournament first included a “champion’s dinner,” donated by local restaurants and where the players all have a chance to sit together and eat when the games are finished.

“I am proud the host this tournament every year and I happy to see many returning and new faces from the soccer playing community,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “I want to thank

the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League for their partnership. I also want to thank the committee of dedicated volunteers who work all year to make this event as success.” Volunteers from St. Francis de Sales spent the day tending to the players and serving dinner after the games.

This year’s funds will be donated to Long Island Head Start’s scholarship program.

Corporate sponsors of the event include Gershow Recycling, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, TriTec Real Estate, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Suffolk Transportation Service and Bridgehampton National Bank. Coca-Cola donated 40 cases of Dasani Water and Powerade to keep the players hydrated. More than 30 local businesses and restaurants sponsored individual teams or donated food to the dinner.

On Tuesday August 15th, Supervisor Romaine joined with the staff of the Port Jefferson Brewing Company to announce their involvement in Brookhaven’s “Brew to Moo” program.

The Town’s “Brew to Moo” program is aimed to reduce the amount of local brewery by-product in our waste stream. Local breweries and distilleries

produce tons of spent grains which have reduced caloric content but provide protein and fiber that can supplement corn for feed.

The Town of Brookhaven will regularly pick up the material and deliver it to farms and ranches to be used as feed for their animals. The Port Jefferson Brewing Company is the second local brewer to sign onto the program, the

first was The Brick House Brewery of Patchogue.

The first ranch to sign on to the program is the Double D Ranch in Manorville. Using spent grains for livestock feed dates back to the advent of beer and with corn and other commodity prices rising, the use of brewery by-products is growing.

On Saturday, August 12th, the 9th annual “Play for Peace” Tournament was held at the PatchogueMedford Youth Soccer League’s fields on Sipp Avenue. More than 500 players, spectators, coaches and volunteers came together to participate in the tournament that encourages togetherness in the community.

“This year’s tournament was a tremendous success,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “In a terrible coincidence, as we played on Saturday the terrible events in Charlottesville unfolded as America watched. I helped organize the first soccer tournament after the tragic death of Marcelo Lucero. After I was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature, I felt it was important to continue the tradition of unity in the name of sportsmanship in our community. This year the tournament took

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the debut of a new mobile application tool that offers food service managers the convenience to undergo food safety training in Suffolk County.

This new application will be offered by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as a portable extension of its award-winning online Food Manager’s Course.

Currently, the application is available free of charge on Google Play and will expand to the Apple Store beginning the week of August 21st.

“This is an important tool in the county’s Food Protection Program that uses new technology to educate workers in the food service industry while preventing food borne illness,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I commend our county workforce who was instrumental in the creation of this mobile application so that we can offer training in a more efficient manner.”

A valid food protection/ food safety certificate issued by an approved entity must be posted in public view in all food establishments regulated by the Department.

The Food Manager’s Course mobile application was created with $70,000 in federal funding through a Cooperative Agreement with the United States Food and Drug Administration that encourages innovation by local, state and tribal regulatory agencies to continuously improve Food Protection Programs and conform to voluntary national standards. The application is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Suffolk County was the first Health Department in New York State to require mandatory food safety training beginning in 1977. More than 106,000 Food Managers have been certified since the course’s

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364.

This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning.

All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time.

Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home.

New beginnings, indeed.

And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?”

Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time.

As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience.

While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road.

Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

Students who successfully complete the course are issued a certificate that must be renewed every three years. Certificate holders who register for renewal within 90 days following expiration of their certificates are eligible for the two half-day renewal course.

While the online and mobile course content are free, in order to obtain a food manager’s certificate an individual must take an in-person exam at the County Department of Health Services’ Bureau of Public Health Protection in Yaphank. Exams are offered on a regular basis.

Individuals who download the mobile application and wish to take the exam and receive a certificate are charged $50, plus a small $0.88 credit card handling fee.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services also offers a free online Food Manager’s Course that satisfies the Food Manager certificate requirement for all food establishments while allowing an individual to take the class at their convenience. The course consists of 20 modules that address various food safety topics, with a short quiz that follows each module.

Successfully answering the quiz questions allows an individual to advance to the next module.

All modules must be completed within 45 days of registering for the course.

After completing all modules, he or she will be prompted to sign up for a test date and can register here. Following completion of the online course, individuals who take an in-person exam will be charged $50.

The “Hoops for Hope” fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event, which was held on August 4th, brought together hundreds of people from the community to help fight heroin addiction, raise money for a scholarship in Jake Engel’s name, and to help fund Hope House Ministries. The free event included a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music.

He also introduced all newly installed school board members and new superintendents, and wished them success in their positions.

Lorraine Deller, executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, said that in their roles as board of education members and school superintendents they have become guardians of Long Island’s “high performing and highly regarded” public schools.

Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia.

They provided updates on changes being made to education policy such as state assessments and teacher evaluations.

Regent Tilles explained

that now more than ever teachers and administrators from local school districts are a part of these discussions. “We’re listening to you,” he said.

Commissioner Elia spoke about the state Education Department’s plan to meet the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, commonly known as ESSA. More than 150 meetings have been held throughout the state with input received from administrators, teachers, parents and students. She also spoke about the need to provide all students in the state with access to higherlevel courses and career and technical programs, and said that a revised teacher evaluation system is in the works. Following her presentation, she took questions from the audience on a variety of education issues.

More than 300 educational leaders from Long Island came together for SCOPE Education Service’s 33rd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, which was held at the Bourne Mansion in Oakdale on August 10th.

SCOPE provides a vast array of services to school districts, including before and after-school child care programs, school enrichment programs and staff professional development.

The event provided a networking opportunity for new and returning school superintendents and board of education trustees and other professionals who work closely with the education system. SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize and benefit from the many programs and

Golf Classic Set The Friends of Mercy Medical Center 36th Annual Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, September 14th, at the Garden City Country Club.

Heart Walk Ambassador

The American Heart Association is proud to have Maddie Kellerman of Westbury, serving as the 2017 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 17th at Jones Beach.

Seven-year-old Maddie was born with a congenital heart defect and has undergone several surgeries to fix her Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. Today she is an active child and she looks forward to participating in the Long Island Heart Walk.

Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges.

The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply.

The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants.

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements.

Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day.

Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be

more physically active.

Choose the right activity.

Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch.

Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a

screen .

Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family.

This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family.

Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula.

Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on campus.

As this Northern Michigan University senior reflects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my parents money.”

And from a University of Florida senior: “The problem with college is that you figure it out about the time you’re ready to graduate.”

Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity.

Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report

Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Some, like Australia, feature four terms with two-week breaks in between each term. Others go to school for most of the year - with various holiday breaks in between - and then get the bulk of their time off during the summer.

“Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day.

The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness.

However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and

baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood.

Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled.

If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities.

It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

Transitioning to Middle School A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people.

Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools.

Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be.

The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive

transition from elementary school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school.

Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus.

Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school.

Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school.

Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue.

Staying Engaged During Summer will be times when they are left to their own devices, and during these times it’s easy for them to forget classroom lessons. Sometimes called “summer learning loss” or “summer slide,” this forgetfulness sees many students fail to retain all of their lessons over prolonged breaks from school. Studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer. Anywhere from between one to three month’s worth of educational achievement can dissipate during prolonged breaks from the classroom. To help ensure that those hard-

earned lessons are not so easily forgotten, parents can help children remain intellectually engaged in various ways over school breaks.

Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins.

Encourage reading.

Set aside time for reading each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills.

Children may enjoy picking their own books rather

than having a required reading list.

Keep a math book handy. On long car trips or rainy days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum.

Math workbooks may be available at bookstores, or parents can look online or ask a teacher for a summer to-do packet.

Plan educational trips.

Vacations and day trips can be fun, entertaining and educational all at the same time. Science centers, museums and living history locations can bring to life information learned in the classroom, even on family vacations.

Learn at camp. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school

breaks. Look for camps that do not simply babysit children, but engage them through enrichment activities.

Take a class. Children and families can learn together by exploring new skills. Enroll in something educational and enjoyable, such as a music or dance class, a STEM seminar or something else that engages the mind and body. This gives everyone a chance to learn something new and have a great time together as a family.

Parents and educators can reduce lesson loss over school breaks by encouraging families to remain intellectually engaged in any way they can.

Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths.

Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect.

Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure.

Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.
