The motivational project, which was the first of its kind on Long Island, is designed to generate positive attitudes toward learning. Senator Flanagan was invited to join the children by Dr. Charles Robbins, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Undergraduate Colleges.

Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are
those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As
much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

Ward Melville High School students Jordan Pollak, Rose Kelsos and Henry DaCosta’s films have been selected for the 2014 Varsity Brands All American High School Film Festival. Pollak’s film “Jody’s Space,” Kelso’s film “Please Come Again” and DaCosta’s film “Hysteria” will be screened from October 24th-27th at the AMC Empire Theaters in Times Square. Thousands of submissions were received from more than 45 states, and theirs made the cut. “This is an amazing honor,” Jennifer Trettner, the chairperson for art and technology for Ward Melville High School, said. “The Ward Melville art department is incredibly proud of these young film students and their accomplishments. These films are a true reflection of Jordan’s, Rose and Henry’s talent, dedication and motivation to their art. Congratulations also goes to Mrs. DiLorenzo for inspiring her students every day.”

SBPLI Golf Outing following year. In 2003, Stephanie was approached by SBPLI’s founder, Fred Breithut, to join a new committee which would bring FLL programs to Long Island. She has been a dedicated and active committee member since then, helping to grow the program from 13 teams the first year to over 110 teams in the 10th year. She also helped to start the Jr. FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr. FLL) on Long Island for students ages six to nine. Three of the Sterns’ four children - Andrew, Danny and Emily - participated in FIRST® programs, chose Engineering as their majors in college, and can attest to the value of SBPLI’s FIRST® programs. During this journey Stephanie and Jeff
realized they wanted to be even more involved with SBPLI. The Stern family is still active in volunteering their time and talents at many FIRST® competitions and events. They are proud that members of their family and many of their friends have given their support as well. Jeff is well-known in the community as a FLL Judge, a sponsor, and a staunch supporter of the teams. Senator John Flanagan recently visited the Stony Brook University’s Freedom School to read with the children who participate in the summer enrichment program. The motivational project, which was the first of its kind on Long Island, is designed to generate positive attitudes toward learning. Senator Flanagan was invited to join the children by Dr. Charles Robbins, Vice
Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Undergraduate Colleges. All of the students in the program, which is run in conjunction with the Children’s Defense Fund, are heading into fourth grade and the program helps instill in them a true belief that they are capable of accomplishing great things in their lives. By reaching the children at a young age, the initiative will help set them up for
academic success in their future academic career. “I would like to thank Dr. Robbins and his staff for inviting me to visit and the children for allowing me to spend a part of their day with them. This is a wonderful program that will benefit these students for years to come and it was truly my pleasure to join them,” stated Senator Flanagan.

Regatta To Set Sail Two sailboat teams will race for charity on Long Island Sound in the Setauket Yacht Club’s 5th Annual Village Cup Regatta on Saturday, September 6th. The friendly competition between John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. The event has raised more than $175,000 for the two organizations. Actor and local resident Ralph Macchio will for the second year act as Ambassador for the Regatta to help publicize the important work of the two programs it funds. Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program. The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two
teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson. Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 am with WALK 97.5 supplying the music. Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist, and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 am. All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags. Following the Regatta, a celebratory reception and presentation of the Village Regatta Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center. The Village has won three of the previous four Regattas. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the 2012 race. The event is catered compliments of Schafer’s Port Jefferson
restaurant and the Port Jefferson Brewing Company. Diabetes Prevention Program A free Diabetes Prevention Program will be offered at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital beginning in September to those with pre-diabetes or who are at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes. The class, presented by the Suffolk County Department of Health
Services, will meet one hour per week for 16 weeks, followed by monthly sessions. The course covers lifestyle changes, including increasing physical activity and improving food choices, with the goal of preventing or delaying a diabetes diagnosis. Trained lifestyle coaches facilitate

Great Chefs Of Long Island
The gastronomic tradition known as “Great Chefs of Long Island,” benefiting Family Service League (FSL), will be held on Monday, November 10th from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Always a festive and exciting event, Great Chefs of Long Island is an important fund raiser, the proceeds help more and more Long Island children and families in need. Over 40 of LI’s top restaurants, from Long Beach to the Hamptons, will present their best fare during an evening of decadent tastings and delicacies. There will be wonderful wines from Long Island vineyards to pair with the varied culinary selections. In addition, guests will be able to shop for unique designer gifts at
the auction. This annual favorite will be Co-Chaired by Lisa Paris and Francine Whitehead. Our Honorary Chairman is Michael Bohlsen of the Bohlsen Restaurant Group. All are strong advocates of the many programs offered by FSL and understand the need to increase funding for the services being provided to our Suffolk County residents. Golf Feastival On Thursday, September 18th, The Rotary Club of Patchogue and the Fuoco family will present the 45th Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club. Proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck, which serves special-needs children and young adults ages 6-21 with mental or physical disabilities. Throughout the history of this golf outing, more than $1.2 million has been donated to support the camp. Registration and continental breakfast start at 8:30 a.m. Shotgun tee-off is at 10 a.m. At this year’s tournament, the Rotary Club and the Fuoco family will honor Bridgehampton National Bank. The camp has special meaning to the Fuoco family. Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann, attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21 and their father began regularly donating money to Camp Pa-QuaTuck. In 1969, the Fuoco family established its inaugural Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing to raise funds for the Camp. Over time, the small family outing turned into the event it is
today: The Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival. What makes this golf outing so unique are the “Food Feastivals” offered throughout the course. There will be various “Feastival Stands” featuring an Italian ice stand; pasta bar and wine tasting; Italian figs, grapes and fruits; clams on the half shell; the famous “Italian Gourmet Deli”; a homemade zeppoli and cannoli stand, and a microbeer tasting tent. Every hole will have a contest for “Longest Drive” or “Closest to the Pin,” plus a “Hit-The-Green Challenge” on every par 3. In addition, there will be a prize for a hole-in-one, courtesy of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Fiat. The round of golf is followed by a cocktail hour, a buffet dinner, a grand raffle and auction, all starting at 5 p.m. Registration is $500 per person, which includes all of the above.
