Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York.

This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those

first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Scholarship Honors For Port Jefferson’s Michael Brown

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

Miller Place’s Laura Opitz Named Middle School Science Teacher Of The Year

Laura Opitz, a science teacher at North Country Road Middle School in the Miller Place School District, was recently named the 2023 Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS).

“Ms. Opitz is an extraordinary teacher and an encouraging mentor to both students and members of our faculty and staff. We commend her on this very well-deserved

achievement,” said Miller Place School District Superintendent of Schools Seth Lipshie.

Ms. Opitz is a veteran teacher and Science Club advisor who has helmed many unique and interactive learning opportunities for her students. Recently, she and her students worked with the New York Marine Rescue Center to rehabilitate and rescue a sea turtle named Peachy Keen. Her students continue to

This past fall, Ms. Opitz brought another exciting project to Miller Place by collaborating with the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and NASA. Students had the opportunity to conduct research and present their findings to NASA researchers and administrators during the live, virtual Student Research Symposium.

School may be out of session for the summer but the classrooms at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District are bustling for the district’s summer enrichment program. Students entering kindergarten through seventh grade can take part in the

program that provides opportunities for handson experiences in several special interest areas. From classes that focus on academic interests such as Science FUNdamentals and Eat a Good Book Club, to arts and crafts-themed classes, to food fun-focused sessions like the Summer Snack Squad, there is

something for everyone to take part in.

Each class enriches the district curriculum and provides opportunities for creative expression. Students have been excited to learn new skills, create projects and meet new friends throughout the summer.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Rocky Point Lauded By New York State

For the sixth consecutive year, Rocky Point High School has been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as a 2022-23 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction Award winner. Rocky Point is one of only 23 Section XI

schools to earn the honor for its 20 varsity teams.

Rocky Point was recognized for having all of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the ScholarAthlete team award during their respective sports seasons. To qualify, every varsity team must have

75% or more of its studentathletes earn an average of 90 or higher. A certificate and commemorative award will be presented to Athletic Director Jonathon Rufa the school by the executive director of NYSPHSAA at the organization’s annual workshop in the fall.

Port Jefferson Receives State School Of Distinction Honors

All 22 varsity athletic teams for the Port Jefferson School District received Scholar Athlete Team recognition. As a result of 100% of varsity teams being Scholar Athlete Teams, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School received the New York State Public High School Athletic Association School of Distinction Award.

According to NYSPHSAA, the purpose of the School of Distinction Award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide academic honor.

Meet The Reboli Center’s August Artisan: Jeanette Leonard, Blue Point Beach Glass And Jewelry Designer

It is not surprising that Jeanette Leonard who grew up in the north shore in Lloyd Harbor and now resides in the south shore in Blue Point, has found a passion in designing jewelry from nature’s beach glass.

A graduate of FIT, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and focused on women’s tailoring (coats and suits) and knitwear. She spent a semester in England studying knitwear. Jeanette worked in Manhattan for ten years as a technical designer and then as a fashion designer. During this time, she would design and embellish tops for women. She frequented the bead stores and started making jewelry.

Jeanette began wirewrapping sea glass after a friend found a piece of sea glass and asked her to make a piece of jewelry for his girlfriend. After a period of trial and error, she successfully mastered the art of wire wrapping beach glass into jewelry.

“I am inspired by the ocean and the treasures found there. I find natural things most beautiful just the way they are in their natural state. To create pieces from fresh water pearl, genuine sea glass, beach pottery, shells and

coral gives me an easy jumping off point for my designs. I love the colors that sea glass can be, I love the frosted look the ocean turns into, I love the iridescent luster that pearl and shells have. For me the imperfect is perfect,” says Jeanette.

Jeanette sources her beach glass and pearls form some Long Island beaches, mostly brown, white and green, but the blue and other unusual colors are purchased online. The driftwood is also from Long Island beaches and some is bought in California.

“As an artist, it means a great deal to be on display at the Reboli Center and to be the Artist of the Month!”

Jeanette is the founder of Blue Harbor Jewelry and, the Gallery Director at the Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts (BAFA) in Sayville,

where she arranges for artists or groups to exhibit their work each month. She also sells her jewelry at art shows.

“This is the first time that the Reboli Center is offering beach glass jewelry at the Design Shop and it is a perfect fit, as we are located on Stony Brook Harbor. Jeanette’s designs are beautiful and the pieces so exquisite, we are thrilled to exhibit her work during August,” said Lois Reboli, founder and president of the Reboli Center.

Honing Creative Skills At The Summer Music Camp

Dozens of district students joined in the annual summer music camp at Port Jefferson to continue to develop their musical talents

in a relaxed and encouraging setting at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School. For beginning and intermediate band and string

students, the camp provided an enjoyable and positive way to begin learning an instrument or continuing their studies.

The camp encouraged collaboration while meeting new friends and offered several levels of musical training classes, including

beginning band and string. More advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and string instrumentalists

were also available, and this year beginner instrumental classes were offered for students in grades 2 and 3.

Legislator Sarah Anker Announces 2023 Summer Community Concerts & Movie Nights

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker is pleased to announce the Suffolk County Summer Concert and Movie Night Series in collaboration with community organizations including North Shore Youth Council, the Longwood Alliance, the Middle Island Civic Association, the Middle Island Fire Department, the Coram Civic Association, the Coram Fire Department, and the Ridge Civic Association.

“The summer community concerts have been instrumental in providing local performances with free-admission concerts across the district,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “I encourage our residents to attend these concerts that provide a wonderful entertainment venue for all ages. All Smiles At Three Village Summer Recreation

The Three Village Central School District Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Department offers several summer programs to keep students active and engaged while school is out of session. More than 800 students from across the district are involved in this year’s summer recreation programs between the

half-day, full-day and travel camps.

Students in the summer recreation programs at W.S. Mount and Minnesauke elementary schools participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities each day including sports and outdoor games, art, science discovery, dance and computer time. Meanwhile,

the travel camp brings Three Village students to area attractions including beaches, water parks and amusement parks. Not only is each program filled with fun activities, but they also allow students to build relationships with their peers ahead of the upcoming school year.
