On July 27th, the National Park Service approved the historic Wardenclyffe property in Shoreham, New York, for inclusion on the National Historic Register (NHR).

Wardenclyffe was submitted for listing on the NHR by the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (TSCW), a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and renovating the 16acre site, which contains a brick laboratory and tower base built by inventor and humanitarian Nikola Tesla.

Wardenclyffe’s application for inclusion on the State and National Historic Registers received a record number of endorsements: over 9,500 within the week just prior to review by the NY State Division of Historic Preservation, who voted unanimously to recommend Wardenclyffe for nomination.

Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me.

This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend.

Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always.

I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress.

For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish.

My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful.

Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me.

And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Listing on the NHR is based on Wardenclyffe’s historic importance as the only remaining laboratory of Nikola Tesla, whose discoveries led to significant advancements in science and technology.

Tesla’s invention for alternating current (A/C) electricity is the basis of the modern electric grid, and he holds almost 300 patents for concepts such as the induction motor, x-ray, fluorescent lighting, radio, and wireless technology.

This last invention was the focus of Tesla’s work at Wardenclyffe from 1901 to 1906 and culminated in

On August 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine was at West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook to meet with Girl Scout Lauren Reitano, from troop 2547 in Centereach, while she installed Monofilament Recycling Receptacles for her Girl Scout Gold Award Project.

They were constructed and installed by Lauren

to provide a safe place for fishermen to properly discard their fishing line for proper disposal.

Supervisor Romaine said, “Installing the monofilament receptacles is doing a great service

to the environment and protecting the wildlife in and around the water.

Fishing line is one of the most frequent and hazardous forms of marine debris and I thank to Lauren for helping to prevent more plastics from getting into our waterways.”

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently announced nearly 900 students participated in Suffolk County’s Summer Youth Employment Program, an increase of approximately 100 students from the previous year due to additional funding provided by New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to divert at-risk youth from gang activity.

The Summer Youth Employment Program has been in existence for over 50 years in Suffolk County and provides economically disadvantaged and at-risk youth from across the county with first-time work experience.

“It is critical that we keep our students engaged during the summer months and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.

Scout Scholarship On May 6th, Barry Kopeloff of the Boy Scout Scholarship Committee reported that the Mickey Marcus JWV Post #336 of Port Jefferson’s Executive Committee and then the general membership of the Post had approved two Scholarships of $250 each for Suffolk County Jewish Boy Scouts. Working in conjunction with the Jewish Committee on Scouting of Suffolk County Council (BSA) on very short notice, this information was shared with the Boy Scout troops and Explorer Posts in the Suffolk County Council

Calm the Chaos on Busy School Mornings Mornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day.

Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. As noted by the Child Mind® Institute, apps and web content are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. In addition, modern youngsters socialize through their smartphones. Alerts or messages from social media apps or friends can distract kids from their lessons, which may adversely affect their academic performance. Unless teachers ask students to bring their personal devices to class, parents can

discourage, if not restrict, their children to bring their smartphones or tablets with them to class.

2. Limit multitasking.

A 2009 study from researchers at Stanford University found that heavy media multitaskers were more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory than light media multitaskers. Students who try to do too much at once may think they’re getting a lot done, but dividing their attention among several subjects may make it harder for them to fully understand or learn their class lessons. When studying, students who concentrate on one subject or task may understand materials more fluently than those who divide their attention among subjects or those who focus on studying while also performing other tasks.

3. Encourage strategic breaks.

The Academic Success Center at Oregon State University notes that taking breaks can improve concentration and make studying more efficient and effective. When taking study breaks, students should set time limits on their breaks and change their scenery. Walking away from a book, device or computer screen for 10 minutes can help students avoid fatigue that can develop when they study for too long without a break. That fatigue can affect

students’ ability to absorb the lessons they’re trying to learn, so parents can encourage students to take strategic breaks. Once per hour might be enough, but some students may benefit from more frequent breaks.

The competition for kids attention in the classroom is greater than ever before. As a result, parents may need to encourage their children to embrace various strategies that can improve their concentration.

How to Ease Kids’ Transition to a New School

B

eing the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters.

Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.

In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates.

In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools.

Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-forprofit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change.

Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school.

Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins.

The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those

who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends.

Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have.

Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school.

It stands to reason that

students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit.

Transitioning to a new school is not easy for many students. But parents can help smooth that transition in various ways.

hildren tend to learn at their own pace, and certain subjects may challenge them more than others. In many instances, students can benefit from working with tutors.

Tutors can be very effective. Children who work with tutors and then see their grades improve may develop greater confidence and feel less anxious about going to school or taking tests.

Without intervention like tutoring, at-risk students (those who are not meeting academic standards) may not pass their classes, and some may face year-end retention or experience difficulty keeping up in the next grade.

The National Tutoring Association says students at all grade levels participating in tutorial programs improve their reading performance and can achieve significant cognitive gains. Tutoring can be the answer for students affected by inconsistent delivery of classroom content. For example, when families move, students may be forced to catch up in a new school where teachers may

have different styles than students’ previous teachers. Students who have missed classroom time due to illness or injury may face similar difficulties.

Sometimes children struggle because they have difficulty processing or remembering their lessons. In such instances, a fresh approach through one-on-one tutoring may be necessary.

Parents and students have different tutoring options at their disposal. Some services may be offered through the school system at no extra charge.

Pull-out instruction during the day or before or after school might be part of such services. Private tutors, academic coaches, peer tutors, online tutoring and home tutoring are other options. Depending on need, budget and comfort levels, families can explore these and other options at their disposal.

The NTA says families should not discount peer tutoring. Peer tutoring

is a cost-effective way to improve performance. This type of tutoring also can contribute to students’ social and cognitive development.

According to Care. com, which helps consumers find tutors, caretakers and babysitters, one can expect to pay an average $10 to $15 for a peer high school student tutor. Comparatively, a private tutor, whether it’s a professional teacher or a tutor hired through a service, may charge as much as $75 per hour.

Parents should contact their children’s schools for information about tutoring programs. Schools typically keep lists of tutors or tutoring programs.

Examine credentials and seek recommendations prior to hiring a tutor to get a feel for the person and his or her teaching philosophy. Certified

tutors also can be found by visiting www.ntatutor.com.

Keep in mind that it isn’t enough for the tutor to know the subject matter. He or she also has to relate to your child.

According to the tutoring firm Test Prep Authority, motivation plays a key role in the success or failure of a students’ work with tutors. Motivation may be compromised if the tutor and student do not connect.

Tutors also should know how to present materials in ways similar to how it is being taught in school so that lessons are in sync.

Tutoring has helped many children gain confidence and succeed in school.

n ability to communicate effectively is a life skill that can serve a person well at any age. Communication well is considered so essential that the Boy Scouts of America even require prospective Eagle Scouts to earn communication merit badges.

It’s never too early to help children become better communicators.

From toddlerhood to grade school and beyond, learning how to interact with others are necessary at every stage.

Developing communication takes time, but there are various techniques to help kids become better communicators.

Great communication is a twoway process. Listening is often as important as speaking when communicating. Parents can help model good behavior by listening and letting children express themselves before offering their own opinions.

Take turns in conversation. Rather than speaking at the same time or interrupting others, effective communicators take turns offering their thoughts. Listening to others can help shape what the other person might say.

Speak regularly with one another.

Initiate conversation frequently so that children become accustomed to speaking with adults and others.

Chat about where you’re going when running errands or discuss television plots during commercial breaks.

Make conversations relevant.

Allow experiences that are happening around the family to shape conversations. Encourage curiosity and introduce new themes and vocabulary. The more the child gets to experience, the more inclined he or she may be to discuss those experiences.

chools are often at the heart of a community. Schools are centralized places where people gather and friendships are formed.

Creating an environment where school spirit is strong can be crucial to building a thriving community.

School spirit can make people smile and bring them together for a common goal. Creating a balanced environment in schools also can help students feel more comfortable and happier about attending class each day.

The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that, along with showing support for their school, high school students with school spirit perform better academically, are more engaged in social and civic matters and are generally happier than other peers.

Those findings were part of a survey conducted by Harris Poll and involved 1,500 students who were asked about key factors like pride, academics and self-esteem at school.

Scouting Scholars On the morning of Tuesday, August 7th, the Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) President Charlotte Van der Waag and Presidentelect Dianne Scalza had the distinct pleasure of presenting the REALTOR® Scouting Scholarship Award to four of the six outstanding recipients, at a special breakfast held for the recipients and their parents in Lindenhurst.

Through this scholarship program, sponsored by LIBOR’s “We’re More Than REALTORS®” Public Relations Campaign, LIBOR awarded six $1,000 merit-based Scholarships to three New York Eagle Scouts and three New York Gold Girl Scouts in the graduating class of 2018.

Along with the scholarship application, candidates were asked to submit an essay on “What HOME means to me.”

The results were a heartwarming array of poignant memories and anecdotes of life and home (to them) on Long Island.

The RSS recipients are as follows (in alphabetical order): Ryan Ewanyk of East Northport, Hanna Hudson of Centereach, Jake Linkletter of Miller Place, Alexandra Romanoff of Setauket, Bryan Sinclair

of Smithtown, Chloe Van Dorn of Syosset.

The areas of study amongst this exceptional group of young women and men include: engineering, medicine, education and business at Clarkson University, Case Western Reserve University, St. Joseph’s College and University at Albany, to name a few.

LIBOR is honored to affiliate ourselves with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, whose goal is to build the character of young women, men, boys and girls, who then go on to become great citizens in our communities. Eagle Scout and the Girl Scout Gold Award are the highest rank and achievement attainable in the Scouting programs of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Since it was first awarded in 1912, more than 2 million young men have achieved the Boy Scouts of America’s highest rank.

An Eagle Scout in his conduct and character exemplifies the highest standards, aims and ideals of Scouting.

Whether still active in Scouting or not, an Eagle Scout seeks to better himself in order to better serve others and his community. The Girl

Scout Gold Award debuted in 1916 as the Golden Eagle of Merit. It marked the beginning of a long tradition of recognizing the outstanding achievements of extraordinary girls. The Girl Scout Gold Award has inspired girls to become leaders, and share their ideas and passions with their communities; leaving behind a sustainable legacy.

In the spirit of the “We’re More than REALTORS®” campaign, which supports numerous programs and charitable organizations, and encourages members to help make Long Island a better place to live; it only seems fitting to recognize these remarkable individuals and to assist them in their pursuit of higher education.

The “We’re More Than REALTORS®…”

(WMTR) public relations campaign was created by the Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) Public Relations committee in 2006. The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness about the REALTOR® efforts in our community, in addition to helping local residents buy and sell homes.

Village Cup Regatta The annual Village Cup Regatta, a friendly competition between Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson, will take place on Saturday, September 8th.

Presented by the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, the Regatta raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research.

The event has raised more than $442,000 for the two organizations.

Actor/director and local resident Ralph Macchio will again act as community ambassador for the event. This is the sixth year Macchio has helped to publicize the important work of the two programs funded by the Regatta.

Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program.

The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather

Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson. Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 a.m. Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase along with the event’s commemorative t-shirts, hats and nautical bags. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 a.m. at the Port Jefferson Village dock.

All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags.

Following the Regatta, a celebratory Skipper’s Reception and presentation of the Village Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center.

The Cup is currently held by Mather Hospital, which has won the cup three times. The Village of Port Jefferson has earned

the cup four times, and bad weather forced the cancellation of the 2012 race.

Van Donation

On August 3rd, Councilman Kevin LaValle and Councilwoman Jane Bonner were on-hand to thank State Farm Insurance for the donation of a van to Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson.

The van, which will be used for the transport of

goods and materials, was a recovered theft vehicle.

Mechanical repairs and a new paint job were performed as a donation

by LI Proliner Rescue in Medford. Founded in 1980, Hope House Ministries is a bi-county, not-for-profit, community-based ministry

dedicated to providing comprehensive and competent residential and counseling assistance to thousands of adolescents, individuals and families in crisis.

I applaud the Governor and my partners on the local level on prioritizing this initiative and giving children of Long Island a chance at a better tomorrow.”

Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez said: “As a Suffolk County Legislator, it is my pleasure to not only support but continue expanding the summer youth employment program. As adults, we need to provide our youth with an opportunity to work so they may build valuable skills, essential employment experience, and develop a sense of professionalism to propel them into being productive members of society. The summer youth employment program not only gives students the understanding and value of money, but it also gives them a sense of what it means to go out and work on a daily basis and to take care of one’s self and family.”

Brentwood Union Free School District said: "These summer jobs represent more than a paycheck for our youth; they represent a chance to learn important career skills, explore new fields, give back to their community and save for school supplies. We are thankful that the Governor and County Executive have continued to invest in our students by creating more opportunities for our young people to earn while they learn during the summer months."

The Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs received $1.6 million in funding from New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to help run the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). An additional $150,000 in funding was made available to

supplement the program as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s multi-agency plan to reduce gang violence and divert at risk youth away from gang activity. The supplemental funding allowed the program to serve 76 additional youth participants. The additional jobs for at risk youth focused on the communities of Wyandanch, Brentwood and Bellport.

The purpose of the Summer Youth Employment Program is to provide young adults from economically disadvantaged homes and at risk youth, ranging in age from 14 to 21, with the tools and framework necessary for success in their future career paths.

This year the program has employed 888 young adults from all across the County. The young workers are working at

75 different worksites including school districts, not for profit organizations and County agencies.

The youth workers are working in various seasonal positions such as custodial aides, camp counselors, food service aides, clerical aides and teacher aides.

All of the youth working are paid $11 an hour and work 25 hours per week.

This year the program runs from July 2nd, 2018 to August 17th, 2018, with Brentwood School District being the exception, running from June 25th, 2018 to August 10th, 2018. Applications for the program open at the end of April and applications are readily available for eligible students at various school districts and the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs.

In order to be eligible

for the Summer Youth Employment Program, a participant’s family income must be below the 200% federal poverty level. Automatic eligibility is given to families collecting any sort of Public Assistance including cash grant, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI or HEAP. Out of the 888 youth employed, 772 jobs were created through the summer Temporary Assistance To Needy Family (TANF) program, 76 jobs were created through the Governor’s Office for Gang Prevention, and 40 jobs were created through the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (WIOA).
