Breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to help people concerned with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The 4-session free training will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays, September 14th, 21st, 28th and October 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the program’s offices on the Adelphi University Campus in Garden City.

“We know that it is very helpful for a caller to our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the program’s hotline coordinator.

On Thursday, July 21st, 38 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for childhood cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award. The award ceremony took place at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University campus.

The Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award was first given in 2003 to four student patients. As of 2016, 324 awards totaling over $238,000 have been presented to 117 patients. This year there were 38 recipients, the largest group in the award’s history.

Open to all graduates of the Pediatric Oncology Program at Stony Brook Children’s, this award helps with higher education costs, such as college or posthigh school vocational training. It was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook, but later died in an automobile accident. Inspired by his experience with childhood cancer, Dan went on to obtain his degree in special education so he could help children facing challenges and this award reflects his dedication to education. Stony Brook has received many accolades for this one-of-a-kind program as it offers eligible graduates from the Stony Brook pediatric cancer program a small monetary award designated for the child’s post-high school education. It is given annually through four years of college.

This past weekend, Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to celebrate a special event for Boy Scout Troop 9, three boys Charles C. Colgan, Paul A. David, and Christian Hornedo achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. The Eagle Court of Honor was held at the Ronkonkoma Fire Department last Sunday afternoon.

In order to reach the rank of Eagle Scout, one must obtain the appropriate amount of merit badges

as well as completing an extensive community service project.

For his service project, Charles Colgan constructed a sign to welcome visitors to The Town of Nesconset; he also installed flower beds and planted flowers.

Paul David completed his project by constructing a letter replacement sign to inform the community of upcoming events held at the Mastic Beach Hebrew Center.

For Christian Hornedo’s Eagle

Scout Project he made improvements to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church including the construction of a safety rail along with the installation of a handicap sign and repainting parking lot spaces.

Each young man worked diligently to improve upon the communities that they live in, the work that they have done can be enjoyed by the whole community.

Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand…

Ah, but enough about me.

My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.

On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him??

Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand.

It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again.

Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me.

As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish.

Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

Village Cup Regatta Actor and local resident Ralph Macchio will be one of the sailors taking part in the seventh annual Village Cup Regatta on Saturday, September 10th, 2016.

Presented by the Port Jefferson Yacht Club (formerly the Setauket Yacht Club), the friendly competition between John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. The event has raised more than $305,000 for the two organizations.

Macchio will act as ambassador for the Regatta for the fourth year to help publicize the important work of the two programs it funds.

Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program.

The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson.

Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three

classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 a.m. with WALK 97.5 supplying the music.

Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase along with the event’s commemorative t-shirts, hats and nautical bags.

The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 a.m. at the Port Jefferson Village dock. All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags.

Following the Regatta, a celebratory Skipper’s Reception and presentation of the Village Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center.

The Cup is currently held by Mather Hospital.

The Village had won three of the previous five Regattas. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the 2012 race. The event is catered compliments of Schafer’s Port Jefferson restaurant and the Port Jefferson Brewing Company.

Representatives from Suffolk Community College, Suffolk County National Bank and the Suffolk County Persons In Need of Supervision (PINS) Program also participated and discussed various issues facing the growing Hispanic adult and youth populations in Brookhaven Town.

The residents who participated in the program were informed in Spanish and English of counseling

and youth services provided by the Town of Brookhaven Housing and Humans Services Department.

A representative from Suffolk County National Bank spoke about financial literacy, including how to open a checking account and ways to help manage personal finances. Representatives from Suffolk Community College informed residents about the process of enrolling at the college and available financial aid opportunities. A Suffolk County Probation Officer discussed how the PINS Program works in an effort to improve youths’ behaviors and divert them from becoming involved in the court system.

“Brookhaven Town has a lot of excellent programs geared toward helping

youth and families, and I want to make sure people living within our communities are aware of this and know they are accessible to them,” said Supervisor Romaine.

“Outreach is a big part of all these programs and I want to thank our Hispanic Advisory Board and the representatives from Suffolk County National Bank, Suffolk Community College and the Suffolk County Probation Office for working with us to educate members of the community about the resources that are available.”

Safety Olympics The students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Premm Learning Center participated in Safe Kids Safety Olympics and received a “Champion Medal.” Safe Kids is led by Northwell Health whose goal is “keeping our kids safe.”

Safe Kids is an educational program that is easy to implement. The curriculum includes seven learning stations related to safety in sports, bicycling, water, pedestrian safety, fire, car, and home safety. Each student receives a “Safety Passport” and after completing all seven learning stations, receives a “Safety Olympics Champion” stamp and a “Champion Medal.”

Safe Kids Coordinator Katherine Blotiau said, “I hope the students come away with the idea that fun activities should be safe and how they can be safe by wearing protective gear like a helmet or a life jacket.”

Blotiau noted that the Kiwanis, a global organization dedicated to improving the world, one child at a time,

generously donated funding to Safe Kids. the seven stations specifically for the Premm population.

The theme for all the special education summer A staff member brought in the family boat so students programs was the Brazil Olympics in Rio. The Safety could climb in, wear life jackets, pretend to bail Olympics complemented and enhanced the summer water, pull up a jib, and learn where to stow items. To enhance the experience of learning about pedestrian and car safety, the students played Bingo. Therapeutic and balance bikes used at PLC fit perfectly into the bike safety station, and an inflatable pool was used to emphasize water safety in and around open water.

Blotiau marveled at the creativity and ingenuity of the PLC staff saying, “This is the first time I’ve seen the car station be adapted with Bingo cards, or a boat or a pool available to students for a true hands-on learning experience. I’m happy that curriculum was well received by the staff and they could adapt each learning station to the students here at Premm.”

Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community is gearing up for its Annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser - always an eagerly anticipated evening of food, music, and Monte Carlo-style casino games that supports the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation. The Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation provides funds for capital projects, and assists residents and employees in need.

Scheduled for Saturday, September 24th, this

year’s event will benefit the Foundation’s Resident Assistance Fund.

The Resident Assistance Fund adds an extra layer of security to the lifecare retirement promise made to Jefferson’s Ferry residents by covering the monthly fees of residents who have outlived their assets or experience an unanticipated financial need through no fault of his or her doing. The Resident Assistance Fund plays a critical role at

Jefferson’s Ferry.

“On occasion, even with the best planning, a resident may experience a shortfall of income,” said Bob Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry.

“The Resident Assistance Fund was established to protect that peace of mind that our lifestyle offers residents.

We are fortunate to have the support of so many friends and families both within and outside the community that support

Monte Carlo Night is the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s largest fundraising event, which hosts about 250 people each year. Revenue from ticket sales and the proceeds from games and raffles help fund Foundation initiatives.

The evening’s festivities will also include the presentation of the Humanitarian of the Year Award, a prestigious honor given to those

philanthropic leaders within our community who exhibit tremendous commitment, selflessness and long-term dedication to helping others. This year, Jefferson’s Ferry resident Jan Parker will receive the Humanitarian of the Year Award in recognition of her many contributions to both Jefferson’s Ferry and the larger Long Island community. An educator and humanitarian, Jan has made a difference in so many lives. A college

teacher for 50 years, Professor Parker taught economics at Wellesley, Wheaton, Sweet Briar and Suffolk Community colleges, among others.

Since her retirement, Jan has kept very busy, volunteering for RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), the local Red Cross and the Family Service League. For six years, she was a certified New York State Long Term

The first running of this USA Track and Fieldsanctioned community event, scheduled for Saturday, August 20th at 9 a.m., will start and finish at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach.

The kids’ “fun run” starts at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds from the race benefit the farm to help provide fresh

wholesome produce to those in need. It is also an educational place for local businesses, schools and other organizations to volunteer and to improve the quality of life in our community.
