PROGRAM SUPPORTS ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS - For the English as a New Language students in the Smithtown Central School District, there’s plenty of opportunity to improve on their language skills during the summer months. The district hosts a summer program for its ENL students at Accompsett Middle School and classes are formed based on grade level. Students continue to work on their academics and language abilities as well as their social and conversational skills. In late July, the elementary students learned about the solar system and created their own constellations, while the middle and high school ENL learners worked on a Breakout EDU on the moon phases. ALUMNI CELEBRATE SPECIAL REUNION - For the last 50 years students have been taking summer courses at the first marine biology center in Stony Brook, founded by a pioneer in the marine science field, Dr. Erwin J. Ernst. Some of Dr. Ernst’s original students, and long-time friends from Ward Melville High School, celebrated their 1969 class reunion aboard WMHO’s “Discovery” Wetlands Cruise which meandered through the 88-acre wetlands preserve and past the Ernst Marine Conservation Center, the very place where their interest in the sciences was first awakened by Dr. Ernst 50 years before. Programs at the center, which houses two classrooms, touch tanks, microscopes and distance learning equipment, are still offered today teaching children of all ages the “wonders of the wetlands.” For information on future programs, call 631-751-2244. Dozens of students are keeping up with their musical skills by taking part in the annual Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson. The sounds of string and woodwind instruments have filled the air at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School as students worked

along with music teachers Mark Abbonizio and Christian Neubert. The camp is an opportunity for students to foster an appreciation of music with beginner lessons as well as programs to prepare for New York State School Music Association solo performances during the

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game.
