College Grant Received A $2.9 million c y b e r s e c u r i t y, manufacturing and health information technologies U.S. Department of Labor job training grant – the largest single grant in Suffolk County Community College history – has been awarded to the college, according to college President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. The college will
collaborate with Suffolk County Workforce Development Board, New York State Department of Labor, Suffolk County Department of Labor and independent business, including Alken Industries, Inc.; GKN Aerospace, Inc.; Precipart, Inc.; Custom Computer Specialists, Inc. as well as business-related non-profit organizations, the Manufacturing

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.
It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Memoir in the Making As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

Students in the Cosmetology Summer Career Exploration Program learned to perform a wide array of beauty services including how to cut hair, safely use hot rollers, add hair extensions, highlight hair, and apply eyelashes. Summer Supervisor Carolyn McKillop at the Academy at Ward
Technical Center (WTC) said, “These are our future cosmetologists. They are learning introductory skills in the cosmetology service industry. These young ladies are quick learners and I hope to see them here at the Academy when they are juniors in high school.” In addition to cosmetology, auto
technology and audio production programs were also offered at WTC. Career exploration is important because it gives middle school students the opportunity to identify and explore career paths, gain experience, and assess if a particular career is something that fits them best.

Caroline Reale was born on August 3rd, 1916. She had two brothers and two sisters, all of whom have passed away. As a child, Caroline enjoyed the outdoors and spending time at her family’s cottage in Rocky Point, with her relatives and friends. She later spent time in Bethel, where her brother had property.
worked there for some 30 years and then retired and moved to Rocky Point. She never married. She was an avid traveler for a number of years, visiting Canada, South America, Mexico, the Bahamas, Italy and parts of Europe, as well as many states in the U.S. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed swimming, playing tennis, ice skating and horseback riding. At the age of 85, Caroline moved into Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. She has been in Assisted Living the past two years and says she is fortunate to be there and continues to participate in many of the activities. Caroline will celebrate her birthday on August 20th at the Main Dining Room at Jefferson’s Ferry where her three nieces and two nephews are planning a lunch for her and about 30 family members.

Local Hero
Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, at the General Meeting on July 26th, honored Miller Place resident Jeff Feinstein for saving the life of his coworker. On April 19th, while trimming trees in Medford, a coworker lacerated his arm with a chainsaw. Jeff, both an Eagle Scout and military veteran and having extensive knowledge of
first aid, came to his relief. Jeff applied pressure to the wound until emergency medical services arrived. If it was not for Jeff, the man could have lost his arm or even his life. This was not the first incident where Jeff’s skills and quick thinking saved someone’s life. In 2009, his sister severely injured her head on construction equipment. Jeff came to

her rescue and applied pressure to limit blood loss. At only 17 years-old, he received the Boy Scouts of America Medal of Merit for this selfless and heroic act. Since then, Jeff has continued to go above and beyond what is normally expected and they are proud to have him as a member of our community.

Over a two week span, Eastern Suffolk BOCES Computer Graphics Teacher Cora WeuleSparwasser introduced middle school students enrolled in the Summer Career Exploration Program, to the history of animation, techniques of traditional and digital design, Adobe Flash, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, vinyl cutting, and Claymation. Students greeted each day with a new path to explore and a new project or activity to exercise their creativity. They learned how
storyboards and animations were created back in 1877 using a Praxinoscope and a pre-film device called a Zoetrope. Both produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs in progressive phases of motion. Getting to know the history of animation and graphics was a stepping stone for the students’ ideas to come to life! Using Flash Animation, students created designs they would fuse to T-shirts using a vinyl press. “The students worked well with the new
technology. They have knowledge and skill from the digital devices they already use like smartphones, laptops, and computer software programs. They picked up Flash very quickly and learned how to safely use an industry-standard vinyl press,” said Sparwasser. “My hope is that these students return to ESBOCES when they are in 11th grade so they can learn higher level applications, participate in internships, and attain the knowledge and skills they need to be college and career ready.”
On July 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner thanked the staff and volunteers from the Town’s Dress for Success Boutique at a reception to celebrate their 5000th client, who visited the boutique on July 7th. Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide non-profit organization. Supervisor Romaine said, “Dress for Success plays such an important role by empowering women and opening the doors of opportunity. I commend the staff and volunteers for their commitment to improve the quality of life for every client who walks through their doors.” “The women who come to the boutique are looking for a hand up, not a hand out,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Dress for Success is more than just clothing. It’s a place where women can take advantage of a support network and career development tools to help them succeed in the workplace and in their daily lives.” Also pictured with the staff and volunteers are Town of Brookhaven

They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs. Services, Division of Women’s Services. The Dress for Success Boutique is located at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. ReGeneration Camp
The Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s ReGeneration Camp provides children five through twelve with safe, fun and enriching experiences. While children enrolled in the camps engage socially through various activities including crafts, games and outdoor athletics, they also have the opportunity to participate in programs that will make themselves and our communities safer. Children at the Shirley Airport Park Camp participated in a Fire Safety Prevention Program. Members of the Mastic Fire Department came to the camp with a fire truck and educated them about necessary precautions that can be taken to prevent house fires. The children also learned about why firefighters play
an important role in our communities. At Diamond in the Pines Camp in Coram, children learned about bicycle safety from an American Automobile Association (AAA) instructor. Among many traffic safety topics, the instructor also talked about the importance of being visible by wearing brightly colored clothing and ensuring proper footwear is worn. Particularly in the summer, she discussed why flip flops should not be worn while riding a bicycle. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “The Town’s summer ReGeneration Camp is as much educational as it is recreational. I thank our Youth Bureau for making sure that the children in our programs learn how
to be safe while having fun during their summer vacation.” “Safety for all residents of Brookhaven is paramount and our number one priority is protecting our children,” said Councilman Michael Loguercio, Brookhaven Town Board Liaison to the Department of Housing and Human Services. “We as a community need to do whatever possible to not only protect them, but to also educate our children on how to live a safe everyday life.” Brookhaven Town’s Regeneration Camp operates for four weeks during July and August. Back to School Supply Drive The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will run through Friday, August 26th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins. Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 1,500 children prepare for school. Additional collection

career exploration, students played active roles as audio technicians; engineering, mixing, and mastering their own projects. “I hope to see these students in my class when they are in 11th and 12th grade,” said Sperl. Career exploration is important because it gives middle school students the opportunity to identify and explore career paths, gain experience, and assess if a particular career is something that fits them best.

Volunteers Needed Family Service League (FSL) is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and adult care homes throughout Suffolk County. FSL offers initial training classes, ongoing supervision and
continuing education for all volunteer candidates. Volunteer Ombudspersons will visit an assigned longterm care home once a week to help seniors and their families understand and exercise their rights to quality care and better quality of life.

Learning begins with a healthy breakfast at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Summer School at Bellport Academic Center (BAC). “Kids need nutritious food to learn,” said Teaching Assistant Mary Longo. Bellport Academic Center is a location deemed eligible for the free school meal program provided by Island Harvest Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program that provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to children. Longo contacted the
organization and secured breakfast for over 100 students. She attended training to become a site supervisor and learn about her responsibilities at BAC. They include receiving food and maintaining food safety, supervising lunch distribution, setting up and cleaning up at BAC, recording and reporting the number of meals served each day, and offering nutrition education. Breakfast consists of one serving of milk, one or more servings of vegetables and/or fruit,
and one serving of grain or bread. Lunch is also served at BAC. Lunch is the same as breakfast with the addition of one serving of meat or meat alternative. A snack is a 100% shelf-stable juice and an enriched whole grain snack. “These daily meals may be the only nutritious food a student eats,” said Longo. Summer School at BAC is designed to provide opportunities for students to succeed with previously attempted course work.
At the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on July 26th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker honored Laura Logan, a member of the Suffolk County Legislature Page Program and an intern at her district office. The Page Program is a summer program that allows a select group of local college students to immerse themselves in county government and gain hands-on experience and guidance from current government leaders in a mock-legislature setting. “I am proud to honor Laura Logan for her hard work and dedication to county government,” said
Legislator Anker. “As an intern in my office for two summers, she has shown exception skill and government affairs and communication. I feel confident she will have a very bright future.” Laura was born and raised in Suffolk County and is a current resident of Shoreham. She is a
