The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum!

There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees.

3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am.

4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors!

NARCAN Training Program

The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau is hosting a free substance abuse awareness and opioid overdose prevention training program on Wednesday, August 7 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.

NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. Residents ages 16 and older from all Brookhaven communities

are encouraged and welcome to attend. The training class will be administered by the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD).

Topics covered during the presentation will include: -What is an opioid overdose?

-Recognizing an overdose (signs & symptoms) -How to administer nasal NARCAN to reverse an opioid overdose

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School junior Dylan Dugourd received top honors in the prestigious Alliance for Young Artists & Writers’ Scholastic Art & Writing awards for his independent research on computer graphics and video game design.

Dylan spent many hours researching and developing his game and was honored with a gold medal in video game design at a recent ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

His game – Dylan’s Library – is a narrated multiplatform game that was developed with the halls and classrooms of the high school created in a 3D model as inspiration. His goal is to take a surreal look into the minds of high school students as they create their own stories of themselves – motivators, likes, dislikes, what makes them unique.

His work was exhibited with other honorees at the Parsons School of Design’s

Dylan credits high school science teacher Melissa Garcia for encouraging him in his research direction and music teacher Christine Creighton for her part in

organizing students in the school’s Music Industry II class to create different kinds of music for the various levels in his game.

Dylan spent last summer attending a summer academy in engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and this summer looks forward to participating in a game design program at New York University to continue on his creative and technical path of digital game development.

“My game is a testament to the high school experience,” Dylan said. “People want to share their stories and I thought this would be an interesting platform for that.

I look forward to expanding on it and enhancing my vision.”

Meritorious Mathematicians Seven Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students were honored at the Suffolk County Math Teachers’ Association awards dinner, held recently at the Watermill in Smithtown.

The Mathletes team – Sinan Ates, Christine

Iasso, Kyle Onghai, David Rotunno, Pina Than, Annalisa Welinder and William Wu – placed third in Division I. Annalisa, a senior and team captain, was recognized as one of Suffolk County’s overall high scorers, an achievement

she has maintained for all four years of high school.

William Wu, a freshman, was honored for placing fourth overall in Suffolk County on the precalculus contest, which he took part in earlier in the year.

Extraordinary HS Golf Career Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Shane DeVincenzo tied for second place in the New York State High School golf championships held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University, June 2 and 3.

There were 99 players in the field, representing the best student golfers from all 11 sections of the state. He shot 73-75 and made a great

birdie on 18 to grab his share of second place.

By finishing in the top six, Shane qualified for the prestigious Federation Championships at the Bethpage Black Golf Course on June 9. There he will be among the top 24 players from public, private, city and independent schools in the state.

“Shane worked tirelessly for five years and it all

culminated with an outstanding performance,” coach Chuck Ruoff said. “He represented Port Jefferson and all of Suffolk County like a champion.”

Shane will continue his academic and athletic career at Fairfield University this fall.
