Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19.

CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals.

The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or lifethreatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement.

People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus.

Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement.

The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the

The History of the American Slave Ship Wanderer and Her

Enslaved People In spite of the fact that in 1808, Federal law prohibited the importation of slaves in the United States, the beautifully appointed schooner yacht Wanderer brought approximately 400 enslaved men, women, and children from the west coast of Africa to the slave state of Georgia in November, 1858, just three years before the American Civil War (1861-1865).

The resilient Ward Melville High School Class of 2020 officially marked the end of their journey through the Three Village Central School District in a unique way, as the district hosted 11 separate graduation ceremonies throughout the weekend of July 18-19.

Observing social distancing guidelines and wearing masks when within 6-feet of individuals other than their family members, the ceremonies featured many traditional graduation aspects and provided families with the chance to celebrate this momentous milestone.

Each ceremony began with a recorded version of “Pomp and Circumstance” followed by an in-person performance of “The StarSpangled Banner” by graduating senior Jordan Amato. Class of 2020 valedictorian William Sun and salutatorian Matthew Fiorella delivered eloquent commencement speeches during each of the 11 ceremonies, imparting words of wisdom and

collective sentiments about their hope for the future.

“We are at a peak of ambition and aspiration; we are all seeking to maximize our potential…… (and) how we choose to capitalize on this moment will determine the brightness of more than just our own future,” said Matthew.

“More than any other generation, we know that taking small steps in large amounts can overcome large barriers,” added William. “If we take small steps to improve ourselves we can better our lives and the lives of others instead of waiting around for the one person to solve our problems….

As an upcoming class of empowered youth, we don’t need to sit around and feel powerless. We don’t need to define ourselves by what we don’t have but can define ourselves by what we can have. We, not just a few of us but all of us, can change the world.”

Sarah Thornton announced that this year’s class gift would be a new tree, bench and rock escribed with a quote at the front part of the school lawn, symbolizing the Class of 2020’s continued growth and strength. In addition, Principal William Bernhardt focused his congratulatory address in the form of a letter penned factiously by the graduates almost 50 years into the future meant as a reflection on this pivotal time in history and all of the potential the lay ahead.

Before ceremoniously turning their tassels with the help of Student Government representative Jennifer Barnett and tossing their graduation caps into the summer air, each graduate was individually called to the podium to receive their diploma. Each was celebrated with rounds of applause and then able to take a commemorative photo, while observing social distancing guidelines.

The details of this tragic event where more than 80 Africans died during the approximately month and-a-half voyage and those that arrived sick, emaciated and desperate, were quickly sold into the system.

This program will be followed by a brief question and answer period. The program will be presented

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) recently announced that it is the first community practice in New York State to administer Lu177 therapy (Lutathera): the first radioactive drug approved for targeted treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).

NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones.

These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract.

Lu-177 therapy provides patients with certain cancerous NETs with a new treatment option which will positively impact healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality associated with cancers.

Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This

Help This U.S. Soldier Overseas Bring His Two Previously Mistreated Dogs Back to the US There are parts of the world that sadly aren’t a safe place for dogs. So when American soldiers see some that have been abandoned or abused, they can’t help but to want to get involved. When they do, they form a bond with the dog, and can’t bear the thought of leaving them behind when it’s time to head back home.

A soldier has reached out to Guardians of Rescue, asking for help to get his two dogs back to the U.S. from overseas, so they can live out their life with him in peace.

“We understand how important it is that they are able to rescue these dogs for good and make them a permanent part of their family,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We absolutely want to help them, and know how to make it happen, but we have to have the financial backing of the public to pull it off.”

Chief Warrant Officer Anderson has been on a mission, serving overseas for his country. Now, his country is being asked to help him with his mission of bringing his two beloved dogs home with him. As he is scheduled to head back to America, the idea of leaving the dogs behind in a foreign country is weighing heavy on his heart. He swore to both dogs that they would never be abandoned and mistreated gain, and he’s

counting on Guardians of Rescue to help ensure it.

The two dogs, Moose and Sergeant Mimi Morale, were found by Anderson.

They were strays that were starving and had been mistreated. He rescued them, gave them the treatment they needed to nurse them back to health, named them, and then fell in love. Sergeant Mimi Morale got her name, because she has a special way of boosting the morale of everyone around, and putting a smile on everyone’s face. The two canine companions have been living in his tent and have become family.

“There’s nothing like the bond you can have with a dog, or with dogs in this case,” explained Chief Warrant Officer Anderson. “I love these dogs like family, and I can’t walk away and leave family behind over here. I will forever be grateful to be able to take them back to the U.S. so they can continue being a part of my family.”

While Guardians of Rescue has helped numerous soldiers be able to bring their adopted dogs back to the US from overseas, it’s a costly process. This July 4th, as we celebrate the nation’s independence, it would be extra special to honor those members who are on the front line securing it. Helping to bring back this soldiers dogs would be the ultimate reward, honoring why they serve in the military, which is

to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It’s estimated that to bring both dogs back will cost around $9,000. The only way they can ensure that the soldier’s dogs can be brought back is by raising the funds that it will take to do so. New Study of Bats Could Provide Clues to Protection Against Coronaviruses Continued From 14 Foundation (NSF) with a one-year grant, effective July 1.

While many similar studies of viruses in bats focus on the host’s immune system, this study centers on goblet cells, which produce mucus in the nasal passages. Goblet cells are present in bat noses, and researchers hypothesize that there must be a difference in how coronaviruses attack these cells in bats versus humans.

“There is much to learn

about the cells viruses attack upon entry,” says Dávalos. “Because of the acute respiratory symptoms and the curious loss of the sense of smell in some human patients with COVID-19 there is a hint that cells in the nasal passage are afflicted first.

“We suspect that the receptors coronaviruses use to enter cells are distributed differently in the bats that have, for many generations, faced the challenge of circulating coronaviruses.”

To test their hypothesis and compare the

differences between bats and humans and to understand how the lining, or epithelium, is modified in bats compared to humans, the researchers will compare proteins, DNA and histology of bats to humans and mice.

The work will highlight the role of goblet cells, which have immune and inflammatory functions, as critical for infection from-versus resistance to viral attack. They will use bat tissue samples from the Dávalos lab, as well as published data sets from human and mice nasal

tissues samples.

Findings from the research will also enable health agencies worldwide to better survey bat populations and potentially help to prevent further pandemics similar to COVID-19. For more information about the research and grant, see this NSF webpage.

According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to

maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled.

It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis.

Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

EquityFirstFoundation

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more.

Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more.

Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees.

Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit.

EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program.

This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined.

This organization is asking for your help in becoming an advocate for their food drop initiative to help families like yours or your neighbors. Hunger does not discriminate in a time like this.

If you would like to lead a team and assist with a food drive, become a drop off location or just help spread the word, they could use your help! The most wanted items are gift cards, non perishables items, and hygiene/cleaning supplies.
