Free Safety Classes The Suffolk County Police Department is again offering its free “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance” classes for teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19. Designed to supplement training already learned from DMV, defensive driving and driver education programs, this 2-hour course teaches new drivers how to anticipate and avoid dangerous road situations.

Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC).

There are 10 different sessions to choose from between August 7th and 11th, all taught at the Suffolk Police Academy, 110 Old Country Road in Westhampton.

Morning classes start at 9 a.m., afternoon programs begin at 12 p.m. and sessions are filling fast.

The Process that many have tried, but few have mastered. I am endlessly fascinated by words and the countless ways in which they can be arranged, manipulated, stylized to convey the precise meaning the author intends.

And with that, is there ever really complete precision?

Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art.

Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. It’s been something of a running joke in my family for years that I tend to quietly observe the interactions of those around me, storing away the nuances of particular events for a later date when they will, inevitably, wind up in a column. While I can’t say I am ever consciously taking mental notes, I suppose the comings and goings of others do find their way into my writings from time to time.

Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts.

The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.

Reducing Risks of Sickness

take various preventive measures to increase kids’ chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance.

Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current.

Vaccinations bolster kids’ immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vaccinations each year.

Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often, but parents should still ensure kids’ are up-to-date with their shots.

Make sure kids regularly

Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges.

The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply.

The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants.

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements.

Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom.

One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

School-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students.

Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of colds and the flu at school.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children.

While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can

wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes.

Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home.

This prevents the spread of colds and flu to classmates and teachers, and time to rest at home may help youngsters recover more quickly.

Teach kids to avoid common germ spots.

Germs can be lurking anywhere, but some spots seem to make more welcome homes for germs than others. Studies have shown that kids were most likely to encounter germs in schools on water fountain spigots and on plastic cafeteria trays.

Teach kids to never put their mouths on fountains and to avoid eating any food that might fall onto their trays in the cafeteria.

School-aged children are susceptible to colds and flu when spending time in the classroom. But parents can reduce their youngsters’ cold and flu risk in various ways.

Tips for College Applicants

Children in North America will spend, on average, more than 900 hours attending school in a given year. The average school year in the United States lasts 1,016 hours, the equivalent of 42 continuous days. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, many developed countries begin their academic years in September and end them in June. Some, like Australia, feature four terms with two-week breaks in between each term. Others go to school for most of the year - with various holiday breaks in between - and then get the bulk of their time off during the summer.

As much time as kids spend in school, there will be times when they are left to their own devices, and during these times it’s easy for them to forget classroom lessons. Sometimes called “summer learning loss” or “summer slide,” this forgetfulness sees many

students fail to retain all of their lessons over prolonged breaks from school. Studies indicate that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer compared to their performance on the same tests at the beginning of summer. Anywhere from between one to three month’s worth of educational achievement can dissipate during prolonged breaks from the classroom. To help ensure that those hardearned lessons are not so easily forgotten, parents can help children remain intellectually engaged in various ways over school breaks.

Stick to a schedule. Try to maintain a schedule similar to school, with children waking at the same time each day and going to bed at similar hours. This will make it much easier to get back into a routine when a new school year begins.

Encourage reading.

Set aside time for reading

each day. All it generally takes is 15 to 30 minutes of reading per day for kids to remember their vocabulary lessons and maintain their fluency and comprehension skills. Children may enjoy picking their own books rather than having a required reading list.

Keep a math book handy. On long car trips or rainy days, children can do a few math problems to keep their skills sharp. This will help keep learning loss to a minimum.

Math workbooks may be available at bookstores, or parents can look online or ask a teacher for a summer to-do packet.

Plan educational trips.

Vacations and day trips can be fun, entertaining and educational all at the same time. Science centers, museums and living history locations can bring to life information learned in the classroom, even on family vacations.

Learn at camp. Many children attend camp for a portion of their school breaks. Look for camps that do not simply babysit children, but engage them through enrichment activities.

Take a class. Children and families can learn together by exploring new skills. Enroll in something educational and enjoyable, such as a music or dance class, a STEM seminar or something else that engages the mind and body. This gives everyone a chance to learn something new and have a great time together as a family.

Parents and educators can reduce lesson loss over school breaks by encouraging families to remain intellectually engaged in any way they can.

Balancing Extracurricular Activities

Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity.

Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development.

Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report

“Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day.

The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness.

However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and

baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood.

Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled.

If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities.

It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

On Saturday, July 8th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Electric Dream and Science Innovation Expo at the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in Shoreham.

The event was held in honor the 161st birthday of Nikola Tesla and the 100th anniversary of the dismantling of his famous wireless transmitter.

“I am proud to support the Tesla Science Annalisa Welinder, a violinist from Port Jefferson’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has been selected as one of two concertmasters for the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of the USA as part of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute.

As a concertmaster, Welinder will represent Port Jefferson as a musical ambassador and travel around the world to play at some of the most famous concert halls, including Carnegie Hall on July 21st.

Hoops for Hope Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will co-sponsor the annual Jake Engel “Hoops for Hope Barbecue” basketball tournament at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on Friday, August 4th, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The fundraiser is a barbecue and friendly basketball tournament designed to bring together a community that has been hit hard by the heroin epidemic, to raise money for a scholarship in Jake Engel’s name, and to raise

money for Hope House Ministries.

The fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event is free to all and includes a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “Heroin addiction has destroyed so many lives in our community and it’s a growing threat to our young people. The Engel family and Father Frank have shown us

that we cannot just stand by and watch it happen.

That’s why I support their efforts and ask everyone to get involved, come to the Hoops for Hope Barbecue and help your neighbors in need.”

Summer Sundays On Sunday, June 16th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the first “Summer Sunday” event of the season at Brookhaven National Lab. For several weeks each summer, Brookhaven National Lab welcomes members of the public to its site to visit the facility, speak with researchers, and participate in special activities for adults and children.

The theme for the first “Summer Sunday” was Family Fun Day. Attendees enjoyed hands-on activities

about engineering, electricity, sounds, and light at the lab’s Science Learning Center.

“I would like to thank Brookhaven National Lab for hosting these free events for the public.

The ‘Summer Sunday’ events are a great way to learn about the research and projects at the lab, as well as to get the whole family involved in different aspects of science with hands-on activities,” said Legislator Anker.

Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker announces the Senior Advocates summer schedule. Senior Advocates will be visiting various locations across the county throughout July, August and September to educate seniors on benefits they may be eligible for and assist them in applying for those benefits.

Museum Board Appointee The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook is proud to announce that Guy W. Germano, Esq. partner in the law firm Germano & Cahill, P.C., has been named Chairman of its Board of Trustees, succeeding Thomas M. Throughout his career, Mr. Germano has served on numerous not-for-profit boards and agencies and continues to represent several not-for-profit charitable organizations.

Mr. Germano has been a member of the Board of Trustees of The Long Island Museum since 2009 and has served on the museum’s Collections Committee. He was awarded Community Leader at the museum’s 2016 Holiday Celebration Gala & Silent Auction.

Sprucing Up with Sculptures The Long Island Museum grounds underwent a sprucing up recently with the installation of two new outdoor sculptures, illustrating both classic and modern styles. The sculptures represent the latest installations in the museum’s outdoor series, begun in 2014. The outdoor sculpture series is sponsored by Harlan and Olivia Fischer.

Fitzhugh Karol’s Pulse is a set of five large wood carvings, each created from a single pine log and coated with tar. Karol’s initial education was done in sculpting with clay but without access to a kiln after graduation, he began working with wood. His abstract sculptures contain silhouettes of landscapes both real and imagined, and reflect the natural world and how humans have reshaped it over time.

But it wasn’t until she began working with clay that she recognized that was her medium. “I enjoyed working with my

hands,” she explained.

Bringing Back the Team Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island.

The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations. Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support.

The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum.

“The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis. William Lindsay. “The bipartisan commitment by legislators from both counties truly reveals that the citizens of Nassau and Suffolk want the Islanders to come back home.”

“As a lifelong Islander fan, former season ticket holder and legislator, there is no one that would like to see the Islanders come back to their home in the “barn” more than me,” said Nassau County Legis. Arnie Drucker.

“Today is so monumental because if we can get both Nassau and Suffolk, Democratic and Republican leaders all in one place to stand united to bring the Islanders home to the coliseum, then there should be no obstacle that should prevent them from returning.”

Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County would have a far-reaching impact.

“Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride. Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that

the proposal be given full consideration.”

The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 20182019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National Hockey League, legislators said Nassau Events Center, which renovated the Coliseum, has assured them it is willing to make modifications to the venue to accommodate the hockey team.

“Today we stand in front of the very same building where the Islanders won numerous Stanley Cup

Championships and made generations of fans who believed in them, “said Nassau County Democratic Minority Leader Legis. Kevan Abrahams. Now it’s time for us to believe. To believe that if we can get democrats and republicans from two counties to agree on bringing the Islanders back to their coliseum home; then why can’t we believe that this very coliseum can once again be their home?”

Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time. There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable.

Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a world-class facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena.

Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats.

Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur.

Myth: The Commissioner has said that the team will never return to Long Island so is there really a purpose in trying to get the team back?

Fact: Current discussions are occurring with the team about their future so nothing should be dismissed at this point.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued.

Celebrity Golf Classic The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), celebrating its 35th Anniversary, recently hosted its 32nd Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The Celebrity Golf Classic is the Foundation’s biggest fund raising event of the year to benefit its mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 diagnosed with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. After golf, guests attended a cocktail hour and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions.

In attendance was Matthew Degori, a teen who has a rare disorder called Lowe Syndrome. He was granted a wish to visit Disney World in 2006. His mother publicly thanked the Foundation and said she loves being a part of the MLF family.

“It is all about making the wish kids happy. That is the ultimate goal,” remarked Marty Lyons. “I am so pleased and proud to see so many golfers and individuals come out to support this great cause.”

On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU).

The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions.

This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.

Congressman Lee Zeldin announced that a $180,000 federal grant has been awarded to Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, New York, which is home of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard. The federal grant, secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to fund phase one of a much needed four-phase project to construct a 4,900 square foot contract air traffic control tower, which will replace the existing tower that does not meet current building codes and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Phase one is a site selection study.

Congressman Zeldin said, “The 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton has a long and distinguished history of service to the community and our country. The tower that is currently at Gabreski, which has been around since the 1940s, will be replaced by a new tower with the necessary level of communications equipment and safety upgrades.

We must ensure that the Gabreski facilities are always kept in top condition, as the 106th Rescue Wing plays a crucial role in protecting our national security and implementing emergency response requirements.

This grant will provide

Suffolk County with the funding necessary to start the process of replacing the air traffic control tower.”

Since 2015, Congressman Zeldin, who has visited Gabreski Airport multiple times and viewed the deteriorated condition of the tower firsthand, has been part of the bipartisan coalition in Congress working to protect contract towers, especially those that play an important national security role, such as Gabreski tower, from proposed FAA cuts and closures. The Congressman has been working closely with House colleagues on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee, Suffolk County officials, as well as past and current base commanders to secure federal funding for the new tower. In December 2016, Congressman Zeldin joined colleagues in the House, sending a letter to then President-elect Trump to support contract towers, and highlighting the importance of this program in saving taxpayer money, protecting aviation safety, and in providing air traffic services to the military. Most recently, Congressman Zeldin was joined by 90 lawmakers in a successful request calling on the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund contract towers. Just this week, the transportation

appropriation bill approved by the committee contained $162 million for the contract tower program, which is a $3 million increase from the prior year.

Following the completion of stage one, there will be an environmental assessment that takes place in phase two, as well as the design stage in phase three.

Phase four will be the construction of the new tower. Overall, the project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.

After the beach cleanup, the agents participated in an Upsculpt Workshop©.

Upsculpt is the act of repurposing upcycled materials to sculpt environmentally conscious art, in this case, whale sculptures fashioned from the beach debris. The resulting whale sculptures will be auctioned off at the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Taste + Tour Fundraiser on August 18th, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Cornell Cooperative Extension.

For the time being, the whales are on display in the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty North Fork offices’ window this summer. Windows were designed by local artists Giuliana Buono, Juliane Van Gorden, and Nina Lentini.
