Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Rocky Point High School Celebrates Class Of 2023

Even the threat of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of more than 200 Rocky Point High School seniors as they celebrated their commencement on June 23.

School officials moved the graduation ceremony indoors, prompting Rocky Point High School

Principal James Moeller to praise the students once again for their resolve.

“The Class of ‘23 has repeatedly answered the challenge and displayed amazing character,” he said.

Principal Moeller

also told the students how impressed he was with their work in the classroom, in music, the arts and athletics.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien reminded the seniors to “dream big and work hard…your Rocky Point family is proud of you. We will always be here for you. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

While parents of the graduating seniors were able to watch the ceremony in the school gymnasium, due to the size of the crowd other family members

watched a livestream in the school auditorium.

Salutatorian Lucy Clark and valedictorian Abigail Seplavy then addressed their classmates.

Seplavy urged her classmates to “strive for progress instead of perfect.”

Principal Moeller then presented the Class of 2023 to the board of education, and they were officially declared graduates.

The seniors then threw their caps in the air to indicate their becoming alumni of the Rocky Point Union Free School District.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recently presented proclamations to Elizabeth Hornstein and Kathleen Michelle Fallon, Ph.D, two New York Sea Grant (NYSG) environmental sustainability experts.

“I sincerely appreciate the progress that these incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated researchers have accomplished. Elizabeth and Kathleen’s tireless work and innovative approaches have helped to address erosion and degradation in our ecosystem. Their passion and dedication is clearly shown through the results they produce,” said Legislator Anker. “I applaud New York Sea Grant for their continued mission to address coastal erosion, ocean pollution, and other environmental issues brought about by climate change.”

Kathleen Michelle Fallon, Ph. D, is working with NYSG as a Marine District Coastal Processes and Hazards Specialist. She has 5 peerreviewed publications, 20 extension publications, and has presented at 14 professional events throughout the United

States, with the intention to bring national awareness to coastal erosion. Kathleen was instrumental in creating an interdisciplinary curriculum available in New York State public and privet schools to explore their role in plastic pollution, called Plastic Pollution and You. Kathleen has taught several courses at Stony Brook University, and has been awarded 10 grants to further her research.

Elizabeth Hornstein is a Sustainable and Resilient Communities Extension Professional with NYSG, based at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. Elizabeth works to support Suffolk County communities in the Long Island Sound watershed by helping advance sustainability and resilience planning, and implementation of projects.

Elizabeth has a master’s degree in Marine Science from Stony Brook University and over 10 years of experience working on a wide range of marine and coastal issues. She has collaborated with all levels of government, academic institutions, environmental groups, businesses,

fishermen, and community members to protect and restore coastal ecosystems.

The goal of Kathleen and Elizabeth’s work is to help communities anticipate and overcome disturbances caused by a changing climate, including sea level rise and extreme events. They continue to partner with Legislator Anker to provide education and resources for communities dealing with coastal erosion along Long Island’s north shore.

NYSG is a statewide network of integrated research, education, and extension services promoting coastal community economic vitality, environmental sustainability and citizen awareness about the State’s marine and Great Lakes resources. NYSG is a federal/ state matching funds program. The program uses input from stakeholders and the research community to advance state-of -theart research and coastal management, for the benefit of New York’s varied coastal environments and communities.

Port Jefferson Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago. The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve. Members of the Port Jefferson Service Unit 602; Adalia Haas, Anna Cordova, Brooke Seedorf, Gabriella Blouin, Olivia Godsey, Victoria Salerno, Faith Hennessy, Hermione Granger, Kylie Smith, Abigail Bozzanca, Giuliana Avella and Mikayla Reyes were among those

acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To

meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 2986 members Adalia Haas, Anna Cordova, Brooke Seedorf and Gabriella Blouin worked with the Comsewogue Public Library to create a pollinator garden to attract bees and butterflies to the area.

For their project, Olivia

Hermione Granger, Kylie Smith and Abigail Bozzanca created a butterfly garden that they painted, watered

and decorated for third graders as part of their curriculum. They also donated butterfly books, snacks, and drinks for the butterfly release party.

Comsewogue School District Continues Its Tradition Of Giving Back To Honor Late Retired Superintendent

Dr. Joe Rella, the late Superintendent of Schools of the Comsewogue School District, taught staff and students how to build a compassionate, strong community through service and philanthropy. In 2018, the year he retired, the District launched Joe’s Day of Service to honor his legacy by focusing on community service projects for at least one day of the school year. After he passed in 2020,

Joe’s Day of Service took on an even stronger meaning. Now in its sixth year, staff and students recently completed several Joe’s Day of Service projects aimed at fostering community pride, alleviating food insecurity and spreading kindness, among other topics.

“The District’s administration, Board of Education, teachers, students and community members have done a

tremendous job this year to bring our community together to promote charity work and service. Through their efforts, we have made significant achievements and strengthened our sense of community pride,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “Whether it was volunteering at Sunshine Prevention Center or creating a school garden, each project for Joe’s Day of

Service reminds us of why we started this initiative and how important it is for us to come together and give back.”

Fifth-grade students at Boyle Road Elementary School dedicated their Joe’s Day of Service project to volunteering at Sunshine Prevention Center, a community youth and family agency in Port Jefferson Station. They started their project last fall and spent their first visit to the facility decorating it for the holidays, raking the leaves outside and restocking its food pantry. Throughout the year, students who displayed good behavior in class would earn “kindness bucks” that they could use to purchase donations and gifts for the Sunshine Prevention Center. The fifth graders also worked with staff members at the facility to create and perform a puppet show for their fellow

Boyle Road peers focused on teaching compassion and standing up to bullying. Through the puppet show, students practiced leadership skills, public speaking, intonation and inflection, eye contact and responding to an audience.

Other projects students engaged with for their Joe’s Day of Service involved beautifying their school by planting flowers and plants in gardens and along walkways. Fourth-grade students at Boyle Road Elementary School even met with a beekeeper to learn how they could support pollination by choosing the best pollinators to plant at their school. Students at JFK Middle School researched the best regional plants and flowers for a native plant garden at their school.

Another beneficiary of Joe’s Day of Service was the Ronald McDonald House. Fourth-grade students at

Boyle Road Elementary School spearheaded a supplies drive and Comeswogue High School juniors designed plates with inspirational messages that they donated to the organization.

Meanwhile, Comsewogue High School sophomores led a food drive for AGAPE Meals for Kids, which provides students in need with a bag of healthy snacks and food each Friday.

Joe’s Day of Service began in 2018 when special education teacher Andrew Harris launched the initiative to honor Dr. Rella after he retired. Past year’s efforts included cleaning graves at Calverton National Cemetery, singing to residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University and volunteering for a clean-up effort at local animal rescue shelters.

Legislator Anker Partners With Balloon Recycling Organization

Suffolk County

Legislator Sarah Anker announces her partnership with Balloon Mission, a notfor-profit organization that collects and repurposes latex and mylar balloons before they become litter. Her office will provide a balloon recycling bin for drop off.

The organization’s Executive Director Cynthia Seibold comments, “We get it. People love balloons. Bright colors and big displays at a cheap cost, no wonder they’re more popular than ever! But when the fun is done, no one knows for certain where they end up or the unintended consequences they have in our world.”

According to the organization, mylar balloons are made from a thin plastic sheet, then sprayed with aluminum to give them a shiny reflective surface. Out in the environment, mylar balloons will degrade, lose their coating and turn clear like a plastic bag. While latex balloons are made from rubber, they have an added plastic to make them stay inflated longer and are not biodegradable. Plastic ribbons and balloon debris float at the top of the water column where they are ingested by animals

or entangled in them. This can cause death by suffocation, starvation, or drowning.

In 2019, Legislator Anker sponsored legislation to ban the intentional release of balloons after she was made aware of the hazard balloons cause to our sea life and environment.

“Thousands of helium balloons were being released at high school graduations, events,

and celebrations. Those balloons eventually ended up on the ground, caught up in trees or electrical lines, or most likely landed in our ocean. Sea creatures and birds can become entangled in balloon debris, choke or die.

People need to be aware how serious this issue is,” said Legislator Anker. “A study found that balloons are the highest risk of plastic debris for seabirds.

In addition to balloons, plastic debris kills over 100,000 sea mammals each year. With so much pollution in our ocean, we can make a difference by taking this small step to

help clean up our ocean.”

One of Balloon Mission’s initiatives is to partner with the district to raise awareness and give people a chance to do better for our environment. For

more information about Balloon Mission go to https://balloonmission. org/. If you would like to drop off balloons call Legislator Anker’s office at 631-854-1600.

Port Jefferson School District Offers

Academic Enrichment Camps

The Port Jefferson School District is offering two academic camps to Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students. The goal of the camps will be to extend and enrich student knowledge in coding and drones. During the camp sessions, students will learn new skills and work collaboratively with their peers to apply this

knowledge in practical ways. Overall, these summer camps will allow students to think critically, while engaging in fun and stimulating experiences with their classmates.

Both camps will be available for students in grades 6-12. Camp sessions for Coding are July 25-27 and Aug. 1-2. The camp session for Drones is Aug. 21-25.

Camp registration is based on a Port Jefferson School District child’s grade for the 2023-24 school year. For camp scholarship information or questions about the camps, please contact Dr. Robert Neidig, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, at 631-7914291.

Advance Care Plans

The United States population is rapidly aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), by 2030, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double to 71 million older Americans, comprising roughly

20 percent of the U.S. population.

With age comes the added burden of dealing with illnesses such as heart failure, dementia and cancer, any one of which can leave you unable to make decisions involving your care.

Unless you have a plan in place, the burden will fall on your family. Protect your loved ones from having to make life and death decisions on your behalf by developing an advance care plan today.
