These little nuances are what can be designated as one’s “true colors,” those qualities we may take pains to hide from others on a daily basis, but that, when faced with circumstances beyond our control, shine through.

This isn’t to say that they are automatically negative, or even need to be hidden.

They are simply part of the layers which make up our individual personalities, which cause us to react in certain ways to situations in our own unique style.

To each his or her own,

mostly. Of course, some consideration for how things come across to others should always be given. Think before you speak, pause before you act; it is always more advisable to attempt to diffuse a situation rather than add fuel to the fire.

Especially with the current state of affairs in this nation, more care needs to be taken to respect one another, to pause a moment and appreciate the fact that, no matter the differences in our political, religious or societal views, we are all cut from the same cloth – and a little thing called humanity goes a long way.

Whether engaging face to face, via text message or some other written method designed to foster

miscommunication, or – best of all – on the pages of various social media sites which seem to double as a breeding ground for contentious exchanges between so-called “friends,” common courtesy should not be dispensed with.

So, take heed the next time someone is looking to engage. Draw in a deep breath, form a coherent thought, give it a second… and decide whether expressing your opinion is worth the potential repercussions. Sometimes, those true colors are not so black and white as we may think.

Remember, when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you are left with a gray, muddled mess.

On June 25th, the Royal Rangers Outpost 149 Gold Medal of Achievement, Court of Honor Ceremony was held at the Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle Church.

During the event, Councilman Michael Loguercio presented Certificates of Congratulations to the recipients.

said, “I was grateful for the opportunity to honor these five outstanding young men. Their commitment to the community and hard work over the years show what great role models they are for their peers and younger children to follow.”

The Royal Rangers program is an activitybased, small group

Prestigious Awards Fifth grade students at Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School in the Miller Place School District recently received prestigious awards from local elected officials for their exceptional community service.

The recognitions included Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Triple “C” Award, Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone’s Public Service Award, and NYS Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s Achievement Award. The four students who received these honors

were Autumn Stahlmann, Abigail Specht, Christian Tarsia and Vasiliki Tassiopoulos.

Abigail Specht and Vasiliki Tassiopoulos received Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Triple “C” Award. This honor is given to students who demonstrate outstanding Courage, Character, and Commitment throughout the school year.

Autumn Stahlmann was the recipient of Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone’s Public Service Award, which is given to

one student in the school who has exhibited both academic success as well as a commitment to enhancing the community.

Christian Tarsia received the New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s Achievement Award. Christian was nominated for excelling in the classroom and for demonstrating strong leadership skills while involved in many extracurricular and community service activities.

More than 230 fourth grade students from the Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School put themselves behind the goggles of fossil hunters when members of an expedition in Antarctica brought their discoveries and experiences to the school.

Students took a virtual trip through Antarctica as they listened to firsthand accounts of the expedition

from Dr. Kerin Claeson and graduate student Abagael West.

The students were able to hold actual fossils discovered during the expedition and try on goggles used by the team.

The fossil hunters also shared slides and videos from the team’s trips in the air, on the water and during hikes. In addition, Dr. Claeson shared a video from the point of view of her eyes as she looked for

fossils.

The experience spanned three subjects in the fourth grade curriculum.

Students read “Antarctic Journal,” in English Language Arts classes in preparation.

Also, discussions about Antarctica’s geography and climate and evidence of prehistoric vertebrate life throughout the expedition relates to the students’ Social Studies and Science lessons, respectively.

FOSSIL HUNTING - Fourth grade students at Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School watch and learn as Dr. Kerin Claeson and graduate student, Abagael West, teach them about fossil hunting in Antarctica. Students watched a video from a fossil-hunting expedition including the team’s trips in the air, in the water and when hiking, and had the opportunity to ask the fossil hunters about their expedition.

Summer Reading through fifth grade, can earn bronze, silver and gold awards based on how many books they read throughout the next two months. These awards then translate into raffle tickets that could win prizes for students and their families.

Students who receive all three awards can then achieve the “world record” level, which will give them the opportunity to become

true authors of their own blogs. Under the guidance of Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School teacher Mrs. Ledda, students will be able to communicate their thoughts about a book with the entire school. The summer reading program aims to motivate students to enjoy reading and receive enrichment while outside of school.

feature of 2016 Surf Week will derive from the decision to move the annual concert and skateboard contest to Long Beach’s new skate park.

While previous skate showdowns were entertaining events held on portable mini-ramps, Skudin says moving the contest to the Recreation Center facility was an easy decision. “The contest was always fun,” Skudin said. “But this year we’re stoked to bring a real skate contest to a real skate park.” The Bowl & Street Jam will be held July 16th with the juniors contest starting at 6 p.m., and the pro event following at 8 p.m. Accompanying the skating will be a number of bands including local reggae standouts Jahstix.

Putting the finishing touches on this year’s event will be a pair of parties on July 16th and 17th. The first event will be open to all ages and will be held between 6 and 10:30 p.m. at the Bridgeview Yacht Club. The familyfriendly affair will feature dunk tanks, kids’ activities, popcorn machines, raffles and music. The following night there will be a 21+ blowout summer bash at Pop’s Seafood Shack and Grill (15 Railroad Pl., Island Park.) Surf Week New York Will Skudin, 5th-ranked big wave surfer in the world and the founder of New York Surf Week, announced recently that this year’s festivities will be the biggest and best yet.

The eagerly-anticipated event - which honors the memory of Long Beach surf legend George “Geeza” Geiser - has always helped shine a spotlight on New York’s emerging surf scene, but this year, said Skudin, attendees will enjoy an expanded itinerary of surf and skate contests, a new Hurley Surf Center, nonprofit surf outings, film premiers, raffles, kids activities and games, a boardwalk vending village and two NYSEA summer blow-out parties for people of all ages.

Surf Week 2016 will

start July 13th and run through July 17th. This year’s centerpiece, the NYSEA Open surf contest, will be held on the most promising wave day of the event. Because of the fluid start time, competitors and the public will follow nysurfweek.com via email and social media to stay updated on conditions and potential start times.

This year’s contest is open to the first 32 online entrants and the top prize will be $3,000. Expected to compete are past champions Leif Engstrom, a three-time winner, and Balaram Stack, who won the contest in 2012. This accomplished pair will be pushed by last year’s runner-up T.J. Gumiela and Richie Bogart, who has also claimed a podium

place in previous years.

Of course, even when the top surfers aren’t in the water there will be plenty to enjoy. A contest for younger surfers will begin at 8 a.m. on July 16th and the kids always draw gasps from the crowds for their skill and their hard-charging approach to surfing. (Remember: a six-foot wave is double overhead when you’re three feet tall.) Additional surf-centered events will include not-for-profit outings for Adelphi University’s Camp Abilities and the Henry Viscardi School, whose students cope with severe physical challenges. These outings represent a chance for disabled individuals to share in the thrill of the ocean in the company of

experienced instructors.

Cliff Skudin, Will’s brother and also a professional surfer, has a master’s degree in special education, and both siblings believe sharing the sport of surfing lays down the foundation for the rest of the event and encapsulates the true meaning of New York Surf Week.

Not all the fun will require pulling on a rash guard, of course. There will be a vendors’ village on the Long Beach Boardwalk between Edwards and National Boulevards during the days, and many surf films will be screened for the first time on Long Island on the evening of July 14th at the Bridgeview Yacht Club, 80 Waterfront Boulevard, Island Park.

On July 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio joined staff and volunteers from the Town’s Dress for Success Boutique to celebrate their 5000th client, Dorothy Parrott from Queens Village.

Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work.

In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide non-profit

organization.

The women served

by Dress for Success Brookhaven come from across Long Island. They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs.

The Dress for Success mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Dress for Success Brookhaven is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Human Services,

Division of Women’s Services.

The Dress for Success Boutique is located at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. It is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on selected Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All client visits are by appointment only. Donations of clothing and other items can be made on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

a bogus tax bill. They con the victim into sending cash, usually through a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” callback requests through phone “robo-calls,” or via a phishing email.

Many phone scams use threats to intimidate and bully a victim into paying.

They may even threaten to arrest, deport or revoke the license of their victim if they don’t get the money.

Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the IRS or another agency is calling.

The callers use IRS titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official.

Generous Grant The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 gift from the Treiber Family Foundation to support the Council’s Help, Hope and Healing campaign.

This campaign commemorates LICADD’s 60 years of providing needed programs and services to the Long Island community.

Funding for this campaign will help to support Chemical Dependency Interventions for families who are unable to afford the service; the Student Assistance

Program that provides prevention and education information to grades K-12 and technology upgrades and enhancements to support the increasing demand for services.

In 1956 R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision to support individuals who were struggling with alcoholism. R. Brinkley Smithers, marshaled his personal and family fortune into the nation’s largest foundation in support of alcoholism research and treatment. In the following four decades, the foundation contributed

$13.5 million, and Mr. Smithers himself donated an additional $27.9 million, to programs to fight alcoholism. Today, LICADD provides substance abuse screenings, brief interventions and referrals to addiction treatment, as well as professionallyfacilitated family interventions, relapse prevention programs and anger management services to adults and adolescents.

LICADD pioneered the launch of “Too Good for Drugs,” an evidence-based K-12 substance abuse prevention

program in several Long Island schools, and initiated a new mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents.

LICADD’s Employee Assistance Program now covers 80,000 public and private employees in the tristate area.

“We are so grateful to the Treiber Family Foundation for their generosity and continuing support of our work. This gift provides much needed services to meet the ever growing demand for quality programs,” says Executive Director Steve Chassman,

On Tuesday, June 28th, Family Residences and Essential Enterprise (FREE) welcomed former New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg who presented the FREE Players Drum Corps with a $10,000 donation on behalf of the Harvey and Ellen Weisenberg Special Needs Foundation. The funds will help support sending the entire 65 member Corps and Staff to Indianapolis, Indiana to make history as the first Special Needs Group to ever perform at the DCI World Championships.

“Harvey Weisenberg has always been a tremendous ally to FREE and I am overwhelmed by his and his foundation’s, generosity,” said Robert S. Budd, FREE, CEO. “This donation is an important first step towards reaching our overall goal and being able to send our drum corps to the world championships to show the world their

incredible talents,” he continued.

“Ellen and I dedicated our lives to helping children with special needs and the love we have for our special children,” said Harvey Weisenberg. “The goal of the Harvey and Ellen Weisenberg Special Needs Foundation is to help put a face on our special children and focus on what they can do, not what they can’t do.
