Fifty employees from Comcast NBCUniversal’s Advertising Sales Team volunteered recently at four ACLD community residences. ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and adults with autism, learning and developmental disabilities. The Comcast NBCUniversal employees volunteered their time and talents as part of Comcast Cares Day, an initiative in its 16th year, promoted by the media giant that gives back to local communities where their employees live and work. Employees spent the morning and afternoon gardening and cleaning up the garden beds at each of the homes. “We are grateful for Comcast NBCUniversal’s enthusiastic volunteers who donated their time to make the homes of the people we support an even more beautiful place to live,” said ACLD
Executive Director, Robert C. Goldsmith. “As we celebrated our 16th annual Comcast Cares Day, we were proud to partner with ACLD to give back to our community,” said Linda Yaccarino, Chairman of Advertising Sales and Client Partnerships for NBCUniversal. “It’s truly amazing what’s possible when 50 volunteers donate their time to make a difference in the lives of others. I’m inspired by the community’s response to Comcast Cares Day and am thankful for the participants who helped to make this effort a success.” Yaccarino also serves as an ACLD Foundation Board Member. Keith Breuninger, a resident of one of the homes that the Comcast NBCUniversal volunteers worked at was very thankful. “This is awesome! Our home looks great with all of the new flowers,” said Breuninger. His father, Richard
Breuninger, First Vice President of the ACLD Board of Trustees, added, “It was a wonderful experience for all of us. I think many of the volunteers learned a great deal about people with developmental disabilities, and they really enjoyed planting alongside the residents of the homes. They have made a beautiful contribution to the homes in more than one way.” Comcast Cares Day began in 2001 with 6,100 volunteers helping to improve about 100 community sites. For the third consecutive year, more than 100,000 volunteers worldwide – including employees, along with their families and friends and nonprofit partners – turned out to beautify neighborhoods, spruce up schools, plant trees, stock food banks and much more at 1,000 local projects in 23 countries.
Magic Aid Donation Last week, Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 and a variety of magic tricks to Magic Aid, a nonprofit organization that teaches the children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital magic. Founded by medical student David Elkin in 2007, Magic Aid helps relieve the stress children experience with hospitalization by performing and teaching magic to young patients. Dedicated to bridging magic and medicine
through the use of magic therapy, David and his team are striving to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, one card trick at a time. Funds were raised through Adventureland Employees’ Water Bottle Recycling Program, and matched by the Helping Hands Foundation. The donation will go towards training other doctors and Magic Aid members sleight of hand, and purchasing tricks that the children can take home with them.
David Elkin stopped by Adventureland last week to show some of the Adventureland staff and the Helping Hands Foundation board members and their families how a little magic can go a long way. For more information about Magic Aid, visit www.magic-aid.org. For more information about Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation, visit www.helpinghandsLI.org.
Faces, faces, so many I see Do you see the same in me? By you I walk day after day Ephemeral and swift As you pass my way One brief glance that’s all we’ll know Other than that not much to show Maybe it’s best just to say, “hello.”
Dream
By: Michael Gelfand I close my eyes, I just want to dream My head hurts so bad It’s a little extreme My vision escapes me, and my mind cannot see I want to become, all that I’m meant to be If I shared my bed, every night of the week We could drift into dreamland, and not even speak How happy I’d be, if she was the key I’d whisper to her, Just Dream of me
Outside the Box By: John McGowan
A creature of habit was he Outside his box he could not see Fearing to try, he let life slip by Puzzled and wondering why A voice inside he could not hide It kept coaxing him to stride Away from the pack Resistant, insistent, he fought the advice Continuing to pay the price One day to his dismay he was forced to stray From his restriction of thought And to amusement and utter bemusement He solved a problem he had fought

with Jamie Lynn Ryan This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

Our children are our future and we must prepare them for the ever-changing world; they are capable of achieving anything they set their mind to.” “In Suffolk County we have many accomplished young men and women,” added Legislator Kennedy. “The Distinguished Youth Award will foster an environment where our youth will continue to accomplish great things, and grow into civically minded adults.” The Distinguished Youth Award program is just one of several of Presiding Officer Gregory’s initiatives to engage young minds of all ages in the legislative process. Last year, he established the Next Generation Advisory Council, which brings together residents in their 20s and 30s to discuss issues facing millennials and weigh in on proposals that come before the Legislature. In addition, this summer marks the third year of the new Page Program, which the Presiding Officer established to give college students a first-hand look into how local government operates. As part of his continued efforts to engage and retain Suffolk County youth, Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory today announced the launch of the Distinguished Youth Award program, which promotes and recognizes achievement, initiative and service in Suffolk County youth. The program is open to county residents between the ages of 13 and 18. Registrants will work with local officials over the course of a year to lay out plans and goals that touch on volunteerism, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County, and physical fitness. Presiding Officer Gregory made the announcement during a press conference at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown alongside young people who have already registered for the program. Also joining him were two of his colleagues, 9th District Legislator Monica Martinez and 12th District Legislator Leslie Kennedy. “The goal in establishing this program is to encourage young people to become well-rounded and engaged in local issues and initiatives,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Our young people are our future. This program is one way to build a foundation on which these young adults can continue to develop a connection to their communities, to understand their needs, and to explore solutions. We are encouraging them to be leaders whose roots are firmly planted in Suffolk County.” Modeled on the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the Distinguished Youth Award program challenges participants to take part in two or more program categories: volunteer service, personal development, exploration of Suffolk County parks, and physical fitness. Medals will be awarded based on the
Clinton Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information, contact 631.669.7770.
Each year, Options for Community Living, Inc. needs volunteers to help complete one-day projects at its agency-owned supportive housing sites. Many of these projects are adopted thanks to a partnership with the Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE.) LIVE has mobilized corporate volunteers on Long Island for the past 25 years, encouraging companies to reach out to their local communities and give back. “Volunteers have a
significant impact on our work, so Options is very grateful to LIVE and the companies for the generous services they provide,” said Options’ Executive Director Yolanda Robano-Gross. Options welcomed volunteers from Prologis (Queens, NY), ThermoFisher Scientific (Bohemia, NY) and Target (Hicksville, NY) and has two up-coming projects planned with Leviton (Melville, NY) volunteers in July. “Options provides supportive housing

to hundreds of Long Islanders with disabilities. We are responsible for maintaining more than 150 properties scattered across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” described Robano-Gross. “The volunteer groups that we connect with through LIVE provide important services: painting, power washing, yardwork and planting. They have made improvements to our properties, and we are grateful to them and to LIVE.”

CLARE ROSE — the Budweiser distributor for Long Island — used to be a company that supported our community, but Clare Rose’s new generation of executives received a long term tax break which took $370,000 out of our schools last year. As another slap in the face, the company cut the wages of its Long Island delivery drivers by 30 percent, ended their pensions and started replacing them with out-of-state workers.

country’s independence, and to thank the men and women in our military that fight every day to protect our freedom,” said Legislator Anker. “I would like to thank the Village of Shoreham and Mayor Ed Weiss for hosting this wonderful celebration each year. I am proud to be a part of this special event.” Following the parade
and ceremony, there was a celebration at the Village Hall that included a Children’s Olympics, annual softball game, bicycle decorating awards, and hotdogs and ice cream. For more information about the Village of Shoreham, please visit www.villageofshoreham. org.

The members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School investment team were recently presented with recognition awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The team earned the accolades after becoming the only team from New York State to place in the
top 10 in the nation as part of the 14th annual SIFMA Foundation’s educational Stock Market Game. During their visit to Washington, D.C., the students visited the White House and met with Sen. Chuck Schumer and Congressman Lee Zeldin. To earn their fifth-place
spot, the team, comprised of students Joseph Cangemi, Alex DiCarlo and John DiCarlo, invested a hypothetical $100,000, during a 14-week period, in listed stocks, bonds and mutual funds to maximize the return on their portfolios.

Adventureland’s nonprofit organization, The Helping Hands Foundation, selected ten Long Island High School Seniors to receive the Tony Gentile Memorial Scholarship. Award recipents were selected out of nearly 100 applicants by the board of the Helping Hands Foundation. Each graduating High School Senior received a $1,000 scholarship to be used towards their first semester at a Long Island college or university. Similar to the ideals of Tony Gentile, award winners were chosen based on their dedication and commitment to the Long Island community through school programs
and community service. In addition to the ten Tony Gentile Memorial Scholarship winners, a High School Senior from the William Floyd School District was awarded a scholarship for $1,700 as a part of a partnership with Tangier Smith Elementary School. Students from Tangier Smith participated in the Dollars for Scholars program by donating $1 and walking around the track with their grade. The Helping Hands Foundation then matched the $850 the students raised and donated the funds back to the school district in the form of a scholarship for a senior attending a college or university on Long Island. Adventureland
awarded the grade that raised the most money with complimentary P.O.P. bracelets. On Sunday, June 11th, the winners were recognized by the Helping Hands Foundation and the family of Tony Gentile in a brief luncheon ceremony at Adventureland. The foundation was truly delighted to assist these young students on their journey to higher education, and we look forward to gifting many more scholarship dollars to Long Island students in the future. For more information, please contact Caitlin DiSclafani at Caitlin@HelpingHandsLI. org.

Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.
“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress and getting a good night’s rest start with
evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements,
exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced
diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress-
-consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older. Learn more about sleep at www.lifesupplemented.org and at www.bettersleep.org.
