The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

www.rebuildingtogetherli.org

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! If you would like to get involved with this organization by any of the above ways, please contact them by either calling (631) 777.7894 or by emailing rtliorg@gmail.com.

After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

Students Say Yes To Volunteering The 38 members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club donned T-shirts imprinted with Ben Franklin’s wellknown quote: “What good have I done today?” as they assisted special needs youngsters with the League of Yes, an organization that creates baseball programs for people with disabilities.

Along with advisers, teachers Jesse Rosen and Deirdre Filippi, the Varsity Club engages in projects centered around athletics and also run school-organized events, including volleyball tournaments and the schoolwide Olympic games; activities that help to raise money for

various service-minded organizations. Their work helps to establish a sense of community within the high school building and teaches them that they can create friendships and positively help and influence people while challenging themselves in the process.

Supporting Cancer Research Students from the Jefferson Academic Center (JAC) sold lemonade made with a secret ingredient— hope. The students got permission to have a lemonade stand at the Port Jefferson Village Center to sell drinks and snacks to raise money in support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit organization that raises money to support childhood cancer research. JAC is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to middle schoolaged students with special needs. The students were

involved in all steps of the process, from building the lemonade stand, to making the lemonade, which was mixed on site from powder. All supplies, including the cups, lemonade, ice, and bottled water were donated, so all money received from the event could be donated to the cause. Students worked at the stand in two separate shifts, and performed roles from holding signs to attract customers, to receiving money and fulfilling drink and snack orders. “We’re really excited to be able to support Alex’s Lemonade Stand, and

include our students in the effort,” said Anna Cuevas, a seventh grade special education teacher at JAC. “The students learned about teamwork and how important it is to get involved in organizations you’re passionate about.” In addition to the lemonade stand in Port Jefferson Village, the students also managed a lemonade stand at JAC during lunchtimes, selling refreshments to staff and students alike. In total, they raised $371.48 in donations.

Writers Earn Regional Honors Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School students Ava Della Pietra, Acadia Kunkel and Jacqueline Wu were honored for their original works on the regional level of the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Ava was recently recognized for her writing by the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. In her submission in the personal essay/memoir category,

“The Song of the Night,” she crafted a narrative of a young girl’s relationship with her grandfather through a series of memories and reflections upon life. For this piece, Ms. Della Pietra received the Gold Key award, the highest distinction available for the Northeast Region-at-Large.   Acadia’s short story was called “When You Thought

Nothing Could Go Wrong,” and it’s about a girl, Alison, who is a skilled violinist who gets first chair in a prestigious youth orchestra in Manhattan. The story shows how even the best and the brightest struggle with stage fright and imperfections. Jacqueline was honored with a Silver Key award for her Short Story “Forever.”

the immigration simulation, the students dressed and acted as that individual as they embodied his or her persona. Once inside the cafeteria, or “Ellis Island,” they began the process of becoming an immigrant. Parent and staff volunteers were on hand in the school’s mini-gym monitoring the different immigration stations, which checked the immigrants’ background, vocation, character and health, and

ultimately cleared them for citizenship. Once accepted as citizens, the students were asked to review a copy of the federal constitution, were given a commemorative U.S. citizen identification card stamped with their fingerprints, and were asked to recite the Loyalty Oath. At the conclusion of the program, the fifth-graders gathered in the auditorium to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and the Loyalty Oath in unison.

Exchange Student Honored Supervisor Ed Wehrheim joined Kings Park High School Superintendent Dr. Timothy Eagen and representatives from the Kings Park Heritage Museum Award to honor Martina Segarra Ostolaza, who has been selected to receive the 2019 Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum Award in excellence for outstanding internship and volunteer service to the museum. “What a joy it is to meet a fine young citizen of the world, who traveled across the globe as a High School student… so far

away from home, family and friends. In addition to her many extra curricular activities, Martina assisted the museum in their many endeavors as an intern while she lived here for the school year. I commend her on making such a rich contribution to our community.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Martina Segarra Ostolaza, originally from Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain came to the Kings Park community through the Educational Resource Development Trust (ERDT) Share Program. Immigration Simulation As an extension of their social studies curriculum, fifth-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District stepped back in time when they participated in an immigration simulation. Prior to the event, the students researched a family member who had immigrated to the United States and then created a fictional individual based on their research. On the day of

spending the year in Kings Park, Martina became an intern for the Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum, joined the JV Basketball & Track teams at Kings Park High School. She also performed in the Kings Park High School’s Musical production Godspell, joined the school newspaper, concert band and choir. Martina will now go back to Spain with a year’s worth of new experiences and a successful year as a Kings Parker.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

‘GREASE’ WAS THE WORD - P.J. Gelinas Junior High School students in the Three Village Central School District transported audiences back to the 1950s as they donned poodle skirts and took to the stage to bring the classic story of “Grease” to life. From Pink Ladies to black leather jacket-wearing greasers, the students embraced the storylines of the students at Rydell High and captivated audiences with their vocal and acting performances during the multi-night run, including a complimentary performance for district sixth-graders. On Sunday, June 9th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony at the Coram Fire Department to honor Troop 560’s newest Eagle Scouts: Brandon Cruz, Robert Cruz, Salvatore Ruggiero and Justin Walsh. “I would like to thank Brandon, Robert, Salvatore, and Justin for their hard work and congratulate them on a job well done in completing their Eagle Scout projects, said Legislator Anker. Through

their dedication and commitment, these young men have proven themselves to be exceptional leaders. Their accomplishments will serve as inspirations to the younger scouts in Troop 560. I wish them continued success in their very bright futures,” said Legislator Anker. Troop 560’s Eagle Scout projects included beautifying and building a swing at the Save the Animals Rescue Foundation (STAR) property in Middle Island, gardening at Sunshine Alternative

Education Center in Port Jefferson Station, and building a trophy cabinet for the music and drama department at Newfield High School in Selden. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that a scout can receive, and requires the scout to earn 21 merit badges, complete a community service project, and undergo a lengthy review process. For more information about the Boy Scouts of America and the rank of Eagle Scout, please visit www.scouting. org.

Creating Japanese Beauty Arrowhead Elementary School third grade students in Lorin Herrmann, Lorraine Hegarty, Jennie Starr and Danielle Tardo’s classes celebrated Children’s Day, the Japanese national holiday on May 5 with lessons on the culture, art and iconic symbolism of the East Asian nation. In addition to creating some beautiful crafts, the

students learned some new vocabulary words as they put together some stunning representations of the country’s artwork. They learned about origami, the traditional art of folding paper and heard about various uses for paper hand fans including how they were used to send secret messages. They were also taught a fun way to make cherry blossoms

artwork by blowing ink through a plastic straw and attaching pink tisue paper for the blossoms. The students also found some pinecones and branches on the school property to add to their ikebana displays, the disciplined art form that is developed in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature.
