A new collaboration will take place this summer between Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the new Youth Summer Programs of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Students from Usdan’s Senior Division Creative Writing Major will travel to BAM on July 23rd and 26th to work with students in BAM’s Style and Substance creative writing workshop. Led by Usdan teacher David Surface, and BAM teacher Richard Hoehler, students will together create a narrative project that will become a play or series of interwoven monologues and dialogues. Students will work to create the theme of the piece, and will then write a script for a new piece of collaborative theater. The culminating event will take place in BAM’s new Fisher
Building on Friday, July 26th, and will feature professional actors bringing the new theater work to life. Andrew Copper, Associate Director of Usdan Center and Usdan’s coordinator of the project, says “Usdan Center is thrilled to partner with BAM for the first time. We are excited to see students from both organizations work together to create an exciting, vibrant and unique piece of art.” BAM’s one-week Style and Substance program, for ages 12 to 14, from July 22nd-26th, aims to build style, tone and voice and improve critical thinking through responses to fellow students’ work. Its Fisher Center, which opened last September, was designed as a dynamic, flexible space for new programs, Brooklyn artists and the community, with an

expanded roster of talks, education and family programs. The Youth Summer Programs offer a variety of one and two-week workshops in Creative Play, Video Game Design and Creating Musical Theater. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, now entering its 46th year, has introduced the visual and performing arts to more than 60,000 children ages 6 to 18 at its 200-acre woodland campus in the Huntington area of Long Island. In its Creative Writing program, started many years ago, small groups of creative writing students engage the forms of poetry, short fiction and playwriting in covered, open-air studios. The program culminates in the publication of Usdan’s literary magazine, Painting with Words, a multidisciplinary

Cloudy With A Chance Of Rain By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the
so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”
Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

David Surface, Founder of the WriteMind Workshop, has had stories and essays published in Doubletake, North American Review, and Crazyhorse. He is a recipient of a non-fiction literature fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and is Writerin-residence at Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts. Richard Hoehler is an actor, director, writer, and teaching artist. He received the OOBR Award for Best Solo Performance, and his work has been optioned by Columbia Tri-Star Television, performed at
regional theaters around the country, featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and published by Smith & Kraus. His fiction and awardwinning short stories have been published by various publications and presses. Hoehler has taught acting and writing classes in New York City schools for over twenty years, and is the workshop director for Random House, Inc.’s Creative Writing Competition. The Brooklyn Academy of Music, a multi-arts center in downtown Brooklyn has, for more than 150 years, presented world-renowned programming in music, dance and theater, opera, film and much more, showcasing the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing
Arts’ alumni include actors Natalie Portman and Olivia Thirlby, singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey, and members of major music and dance ensembles. Usdan’s program features more than 40 three, four and seven-week programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, writing, nature & ecology, and chess. No audition is needed for most programs. Each summer, 1,500 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Usdan Center is an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York.

Robotics Camp Set will build and program robots to perform tasks. On Friday, July 26th, parents and friends will be welcome to attend a demonstration of what their children had learned as the campers program their robots to execute certain tasks. High school students will learn all of the systems that comprise a large 120-pound robot and will actually program and work on existing robots. This camp is designed for incoming freshmen, sophomores and students at all levels who haven’t played an active technical role on a high school robotics team. The day camp will run each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers should arrive at 8:45 a.m. Children who are dropped off earlier will be brought to a supervised location, but such transportation plans must be made in advance. Registration is available
online at camp.sbplilifirst.org for $465. (All online registrations will be confirmed via email.) Those who wish to register via mail will receive a $15 discount, at a reduced price of $450. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that registration is now open for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Summer Day Camp, which is being held in cooperation with Dowling College for the second year in a row. The camp will run from July 22nd to July 26th at Dowling College, located at 150 Idle Hour Boulevard in Oakdale. This summer camp is designed for children ages 9-18 and is meant to inspire Long Island students to become interested in science, technology, engineering and math. There will be beginner and advanced levels for FIRST LEGO League (FLL) campers, as well as sessions for high school robotics campers. Each FLL level will be divided into teams who

Harbes Family Farm (www.harbesfamilyfarm. com) is celebrating a twenty-five year tradition of growing, and selling, Long Island’s sweetest corn. Taking place during the July 13th-14th, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Harbes Family Farms and Vineyard at 715 Sound Avenue in Mattituck, is Harbes Annual Sweet Corn Festival. Harbes Super Sweet Corn, which Newsday called, “Long Island’s Best Corn,” has been the product of years of variety selection by Ed Harbes, general manager at Harbes Family Farm. Sweet Corn Festival activities include: working border collie demonstrations that show these highly Harbes Super Sweet Corn specialized dogs in action (kids can play with the friendly dogs after the performance), corn eating contests, corn related games, sack races,
corn crafts for kids, and “what’s all the buzz about bees,” where the public can learn about bees and safely observe them in a glass enclosed habitat. In addition to Harbes’ usual menu will be corn foods such as corn dogs, corn fritters, corn pizza, and corn salsa. For those who want the thrill of blasting an ear of corn through the air, Harbes Family Farm is set to launch their new Corn Cannon during the festival. The Corn Cannon uses compressed air to shoot the ears at targets downrange behind Harbes Barnyard Adventure. Harbes Barnyard Adventure also includes a bounce house, a bee museum, pig races, Bunnyville, Goat Mountain, a Hedge Maze, the Three Little Pig’s houses, and numerous other activities and exhibits of farm animals. Also new for this year’s
festival is an appearance by notable authors from the Long Island Authors and Writers Society (www. LIAWS.org). Awardwinning, bestselling authors from the not-forprofit organization will be on hand from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 13th to meet readers and sign books. LIAWS works to promote the craft of writing at all levels on Long Island. Harbes Family Farm has activities for all ages. While The Barnyard Adventure is geared toward children, many adults enjoy it as well. Singing Hayrides and live music round out the weekend events. Harbes turn-of-the-century Wine Tasting Barn will be open for tastings and the public will have the chance to sample Harbes Vineyard’s award-winning wines and new wine releases. The sun shone brightly down, the rains brought nourishment, and a seedling popped up. We watched with gladness, measuring the sapling as it grew, dreaming of big juicy grapefruit. It grew and grew and grew... into a mulberry tree. We were all surprised, and amazed, at the multitude of animals that arrived.

Nature played a trick so that my son, who cares for animals so deeply and watches over nature so intently, could bring so much of both to our yard. Nature played a trick, and the fruit our tree bears is not solely for our enjoyment. Perhaps I’ll have to learn to make mulberry syrup and mulberry jam, or maybe the trick is just to munch them right off the tree like the many visitors to our yard. Perhaps that was nature’s trick all along.

(NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobacco-related death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured
A Day of Independence what we consider to be a budding tradition. The seven of us got ice cream afterwards as well. The day wouldn’t have been complete without every single one of us getting ridiculously sunburnt and buying all of the aloe on Fire Island. 237 years ago, our founding fathers wanted to create a place where people could do what they wanted in an effort to make themselves happy. All of America’s troops and fallen heroes gave their lives for the hope that we could forever have our rights. They wanted to enable people to create an environment where people could enjoy their freedom. We did just that! A day filled with beach volleyball and family gave way to a night of fireworks and fun. We enjoyed the company of
each other, and didn’t go to sleep until the morning of July 5th! After months of structured schooling, the slack to do whatever we wanted was welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the fourth, we weren’t forced to study or to work; we were free to do whatever we desired. On that day, we were able to enjoy life to its fullest. We were able to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the company of family. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the sacrifice of our soldiers and the flying of our colors. Enjoy your country, it is the greatest in the world because of the freedom available to us. Isn’t that what the Fourth of July is all about?

July 4th has historically been a day of extreme patriotism. This pride in our nation is brought about by the realization that we are actually free. We live in such a great place that emphasizes our ability to choose! The right to make ourselves happy is undoubtably taken for granted, but on the Fourth of July, we display our thanks. This year, on the fourth, my cousins and I realized OUR freedom. On this Independence Day, we did what made us happy, not our parents. We were truly free. We were able to break away from the monotonous family functions and enjoy the sand, the sea and the sun. Our small group traded in the traditional family barbecue for a “doublecheeseburger pizza”, in

Fortunately, health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey.

Marine Stewardship Program Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the Town will sponsor a schedule of summer environmental and educational programs for the entire family at the Mount Sinai Harbor Marine Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach. The programs, which begin on July 10th and run to August 30th, cover the history, geology and ecology of Cedar Beach as well as children’s activities, crafts, nature hikes and more. In addition, the Center is open every Thursday from July 11th through August 29th (except August 15th) from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Adults and children alike can enjoy the various displays, make a beach craft to take home and visit the animals in the touch tanks. “The Marine Stewardship Center is a real jewel of the north shore,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “The programs that we offer give families the
opportunity to be up close with nature and learn how important it is to protect and preserve the environment. I encourage everyone to visit the center and take advantage of all that it has to offer.” The schedule of events is as follows: • July 10th at 6 p.m. – Ecology of Cedar beach Walking Tour presented by Eileen Gerle, Town of Brookhaven Environmental Educator • July 31st at 6 p.m. – Geological Origins of Cedar Beach presented by Assemblyman Steve Englebright • August 7th at 6 p.m. – History of Cedar Beach presented by Barbara Russell, Town of Brookhaven historian Programs for youngsters include: • Growing Up Wild - An age appropriate program that will include marine animals, crafts, stories, and nature hikes and activities. L.I.’s Auto Racing Heritage Exhibit From the iconic 1970s Front Engine Dragster to the 1946 Midget that appeared in the movie, The Big Wheel, starring Mickey Rooney, there’s plenty to see at Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Summer Exhibit celebrating our very own Bridgehampton, Freeport, Riverhead, Islip and Vanderbilt Racetracks. One of the race cars featured will be a 1971 Lotus courtesy of Guy Frost. Bill Fuhrman purchased it in the 1990s and Northumberland Engineering prepped the car for Bill to race at Bridgehampton. Tragically, Bill Fuhrman owned the car for only two years before he died in the TWA Flight 800 crash off Long Island. Guy went on to drive it in Sports Car Club of America-sanctioned races at Bridgehampton before the track closed in 1998. The exhibit will also include an Outdoor Car
Club Showcase and many of the cars that raced these very tracks (see details) as well as memorabilia courtesy of Himes Museum of Motor Racing Nostalgia/Marty Himes; Bridgehampton/Robert Rubin’s Collection, vintage signage and the works of renowned auto artist George Ellis. Rendezvous East The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th. A group of 25 residents at Island Nursing and Rehab Center, age 52100, recently graduated from Suffolk County Community College’s Faculty Association Community Outreach Program. This was the fourth year in a row that the program has taken place, this year featuring speakers including former Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher and Daniel Linker, Assistant Professor of English, Suffolk County Community College Program Chair and Coordinator of the Faculty Association Professors on Wheels Program. Through the “Professors on Wheels” program, Suffolk County Community College professors donated their time to come to the nursing home to speak to the residents on a variety of educational topics. The graduation ceremony was held for residents who attended the complete series of classes over the course of the year. Residents were adorned in caps and gowns, receiving their graduation certificate with family members,

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga invited Pastor Daris Dixon-Clark to deliver the invocation at the June 4th General Session of the Suffolk County Legislature. Pastor Dixon-Clark was born in North Carolina; educated in the Greensboro
Public Schools; graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Political Science and received a Masters Degree in Theology from Northeastern Theological Seminary of Jacksonville, Florida. He was ordained in December of 1988 and held
several pastorships before becoming Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bay Shore on March 27th 2012. Pastor Dixon-Clark’s spouse Shunda FussellClark is also a Pastor and they have three children; Samuel, Andrew and Genella.

Community Band Concerts For over half a century, The Northport Community Band has been enchanting Northport residents and other Long Islanders with their popular song selections and unrivaled musicality. A summer tradition returns to Smithtown on July 11th as music will fill the air and patrons will fill Main Street stores and restaurants to shop and dine before they enjoy the highly popular free family summer concerts at the Library. The annual concert series was renamed the Dennis Cannnataro Family Concert Series in honor of Suffolk County Legislator Lynne Nowick’s brother, who passed away in 2011. Dennis was the creator of the concert series nine years ago and in partnering with Dave Berner of the Smithtown Library District, he was able to bring his idea to fruition. “It is my privilege to once again obtain county funds to support the Friends of the Smithtown Library in providing family
entertainment to the residents of Smithtown and the neighboring communities,” said Legislator Nowick. “Last year more than 22,000 people attended the free concerts,” she added. After the meeting, Captain Mike Caldwell of the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville gave a presentation about the museum, its sailing program and the prized 1888 New York Oyster Sloop Priscilla. He entertained and educated the group on the background of Long Island’s nautical history and interesting facts about the oyster industry. He talked in depth about the historical preservation of Priscilla and how people today can enjoy sailing on it. At the end of the lecture, our members shared their expertise as a historical society and gave recommendations to Captain Mike on how to spread the word and grow as a historical treasure of Long Island. As preservationists of Roslyn, the audience was
very appreciative of the detailed restoration of the ca. 1880’s Priscilla. The sloop, of a design distinctive to the shallow depth of Long Island’s Great South Bay. Though over sixty feet long, she did not have a fixed keel, but was sea worthy and stable because of its broad beam (width) and used a centerboard, which could be raised and lowered (a thousand pounds by block and tackle) as needed. After serving continuously, dredging for oysters until the early 1960’s, she was converted to a cruising schooner until being acquired by the long Island Maritime Museum. Not only was she meticulously restored, mostly by highly skilled volunteers, but today earns her keep through the museum’s sailing program. (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.
If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www. distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. Class Welcomed The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy today welcomed its incoming Class of 2017, consisting of 238 plebe candidates from across the country. Upon arrival, the Congressionallynominated future Midshipmen began a rigorous, 18-day regimen of academic, military, and physical training known as Indoctrination (INDOC), -- their first step toward becoming future leaders and licensed maritime officers.
“The new plebe candidates make up one of the most diverse classes in Academy history,” said Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., superintendent at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. “I look forward to seeing entire Class of 2017 learn, grow and serve their country.” During their first day of INDOC, plebe candidates received their first berthing assignments, were issued uniforms, received their first military haircut, and learned to salute in their
first official formation. Upon graduation, Midshipmen receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and governmentissued merchant marine officer license that will help ensure a steady stream of U.S. merchant marine officers to support the nation’s economic and security interests. Kings Point graduates must serve five years on active-duty in the military or work in the maritime industry for five years, as well as eight years in the reserves.

A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol
There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to
prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good
cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. • Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves
lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with the cat? • You made a decision, now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter
and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care. • We love our new cat, but we’re having some issues. Don’t give up. Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential
viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan
