OLDEST RESIDENT HONORED - The Town of Brookhaven’s Annual Senior Picnic was recently held at the historic Longwood Estate in Ridge. The event, hosted by the Town’s Senior Citizen Division, was enjoyed by nearly 700 senior citizens, including those from more than twenty community senior groups. With the sun beaming across the grounds and the sounds of Pomp And Circumstance echoing in the air, the 247 graduates of the Rocky Point High School Class of 2013 marched past proud family members, friends and teachers to take their seats on the football field and begin this year’s commencement ceremony on June 21st. Following the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by class members Jacqueline Messinetti, Symone Mitchell, Zachary Riley and Daniel Wood, several speakers addressed the crowd. Exhortation speaker Matthew Amoscato began by thanking those individuals who have shaped his life and the lives of his fellow graduates. “On this day, we look to the past in order to transition to the future,” he said. Adding to that notion, salutatorian Elizabeth Kidney said, “It is okay to be unsure of the future because it can change at any minute… No matter what you decide to do with your life, enjoy it.” Valedictorian Sidarth Menon spoke about the level of persistence needed to achieve success. “In our lives there will be mistakes,” he said. “There will be triumphs and there

Farmer’s Market Opens
On Sunday, June 23rd, Legislator Sarah Anker attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rocky Point Farmers’ Market. The ceremony was a kick-off for the market, which is open on Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. “I’d like to thank the residents and local businesses for their support,” said Legislator Anker. “Long Island is home to the largest farming community in New York State and many of the

On Tuesday, June 18th, Legislator Sarah Anker recognized the Mount Sinai High School Ocean Bowl team at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. The team won the New York Regional Bay Scallop Bowl held on February 16th at Stony Brook University. “I’d like to congratulate the Mount Sinai Ocean Bowl team on its achievement,” said Legislator Anker.
“The students have demonstrated their knowledge and have shown an understanding and appreciation for the marine environment which is so important for the future of our island and its waters.” Mount Sinai High School was one of 16 teams that participated in the competition, which consisted of fast-paced questions and answers concerning the marine

Two groups of students from P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District competed against approximately 35 other school districts from Long Island at the Long Island Science Congress held at St Joseph’s College in Patchogue. The Long Island Science Congress, sponsored by the Long Island Sections of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS), is an adjudicated exhibit of science projects created by middle, junior high and senior high school students of Nassau and Suffolk counties. For their participation, the students developed research projects as part of the Science Research classes at Gelinas. Research teachers Vicki Guarascio,
at the New York State Science Congress, which was held in early June at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In recognition of their achievements, Amber Beg and Kirti Nath were awarded Honors; Kassidy Rogers Healion and Megan Raftery were awarded High Honors and received third place in the “Earth, Space & Energy” category; and, in addition to their firstplace win, Cecilia and Sarah received Highest Honors and won the Junior Division Director’s Award and Suffolk County STANYS Award. Other recognitions included Amy Huang and Isabel Della Salle, who earned juniorlevel achievement awards, and Arianna Ferretti and Serena Zhao, who garnered junior-level merit awards. This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of
their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every
other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Olivia Leheste, Ella Larsen, Leila Oliver and Dakota Rosasco shared their original essays that reflected on their favorite school memories and their hopes for their academic futures. Celebrating a few of the grade level’s accomplishments this year, Ms. Gibbons announced that the school had ranked No. one in New York State during this year’s National Geography Bee Challenge and presented the school’s top scorers with commemorative certificates. Joined by Student Assistance counselor Jamie Adamski, Ms. Gibbons helped recognize the members of the second-grade service
squad, who volunteered countless hours this year to assist members of their school community as well as those in need in surrounding areas. At the end of the ceremony, each student received a blue sash symbolizing his or her promotion to the third grade and a dictionary from members of the Rotary Club of Rocky Point. As their last collective activity as second-graders, the students joined together in song, performing “Amigos” both vocally and in sign language, as well as the traditional “FJC Farewell Song.”
CHAMPIONS HONORED - On June 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine (right) honored the Ward Melville Patriots Boys Lacrosse team for winning the New York State Class A Championship. The Supervisor also presented team coach Mike Hoppey (left) with a proclamation commemorating the Patriots championship, their 22-0 season and for being ranked as the number one team in the country according to InsideLacrosse.com. The team won the championship game in a 16-4 victory over 15-time state champion West Genesee High School.
On a picturesque June morning, the Rocky Point Middle School Class of 2013 took the next step in their academic journeys as they received their promotion certificates and moved up to become next year’s incoming high school freshmen. During the moving-up ceremony, Principal Dr. Scott O’Brien commended the graduates on their efforts during their time at the middle school and reflected on their time spent together. “Over the past three years, I’ve heard over and over again just how wonderful the young adults that sit behind me are and just how impressed others are by their
achievements inside and outside of the classroom,” he said. “I too am impressed and know that they are well-prepared for high school and beyond.” As a testament to those accomplishments, several students were presented with more than 20 academic and character awards, including the New York State Comptroller’s Achievement Award, the Triple “C” Award, and the Presidential Outstanding Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence awards, as well as department awards. This year’s class gave a special gift to the school, a piece of which was on display during the moving-
up ceremony. With the help of their teacher and the support of the school’s PTA, the eighth-graders had the opportunity to design spirit tiles in their art classes. The designs were replicated on small tiles and arranged to create a display at the school as a lasting memory of the graduates’ time in the building. After the last promotion certificate was distributed, the students gathered together for their final activity as the Rocky Point Middle School Class of 2013 – a barbecue and yearbook-signing event on the back lawn.

At several of the ceremonies, students reflected upon their time at the elementary school as they shared personal essays about their experiences and hopes for the future. In a new school tradition, members of the Setauket graduating class took a
turn at ringing the old school bell to symbolize their departure. Incoming kindergarten students reciprocate this act on the first day of school as a symbol of their journey’s beginning. The schools’ graduating classes were announced to roars of cheers and rounds of loud applause from the audience. As the students left their schools on this special day filled with an array of emotions, one thing was evident – they were well-prepared for life’s adventures ahead.
TAKING CENTER FIELD - For the second year in a row, the Setauket Elementary School Advanced Band, under the leadership of teacher Richard Wiederman, performed The Star-Spangled Banner for the New York Mets at Citifield. This year’s performance occurred on Father’s Day at the start of the Mets’ winning game against the Chicago Cubs. This honor is usually bestowed upon high school or college bands, but because the Mets organization was so impressed with the Setauket School’s performance last spring, they were invited back to perform again this year.
This July, Future Stars Summer Camps is partnering with Move for Hunger, Southampton Youth Services, and Hampton One Real Estate Group to hold the month-long Operation End Hunger food drive In Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In the spirit of friendly competition, the total weight of food collected at each Future Stars facility will be tracked on FSCamps.com, SysInc.org, HamptoneOne.com, and MoveForHunger.org. Each facility welcomes athletes and neighbors alike to “take 2 Minutes to bring in 2 Cans” for deposit in boxes labeled “Move For Hunger” on location. Hunger is an invisible plague in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In Westchester, 34,500 children go to bed hungry every night. In Nassau, that number is 42,630,
and in Suffolk, hunger undermines the physical and emotional health of 54,000 children daily. In total, these counties are home to over 131,000 hungry children, and many more hungry adults. Food insecurity is a tragedy for everyone it touches, and it also corrodes the stability and value of communal life for those who think it does not affect them. Six individual Future Stars Summer Camps and the SYS Facility in Southampton are supporting their communities by collecting cans of food on location for Operation End Hunger. At the conclusion of the food drive, Hall-Lane Moving & Storage and Gold Service Movers will transport all collected food from these six locations to local food banks. In celebration of their charitable contributions, the six participating
Future Stars Summer Camps will conclude Operation End Hunger by coming together for a fun day of games, prizes, and barbecue on the grounds of the SYS Facility in Southampton. Hampton One Real Estate Group invites local businesses and Real Estate Management companies to attend the event as a show of support. “A lot of people hold the misconception that hunger is only a third-world or inner-city problem, but it lurks everywhere,” comments Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “Operation End Hunger is an exciting opportunity to both educate and mobilize communities in support of their less fortunate members, and we cannot wait to see how bright these future stars will shine.

Celebrating The Class of 2013 On June 21st, the Port Jefferson School District community honored the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduating class of 2013 at the school’s annual commencement ceremony. Attendees gathered on the high school’s athletic grounds for a beautiful evening filled with pride, hope and joy. Student Organization President Amanda San Roman spoke fondly of the Port Jefferson community and how its intimate size and setting allowed for the closest and most special bonds to be made. “I hope before you head off for the future that you take a step back from the busyness of life and realize how wonderful of a place this has been to grow up in,” she said to classmates. Zachary Graziano delivered a witty and inspirational salutatorian address in which he urged his classmates to embrace the moments in life that are most meaningful. He reminded listeners to “not forget about doing things for no reason at all” amidst performing the necessities of adulthood. “Don’t hesitate to do something small and insignificant without any thought or motive behind it,” he said. Parent speaker and head custodian of the Port Jefferson Middle and High School Joan Lyons talked of her experience as an employee, student parent and community member of the district. She also spoke of her particular closeness to the graduating class, as she has watched them grow since they entered the school in the sixth grade. Lyons encouraged the students to always do their best regardless of their status in life. “No matter what you do, know every night when you put your head down that you did the best job you could do,” she said. “Do not skimp or hurt other people. Be the best person
that you can be and everything else will fall into place.” Following, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert delivered his remarks in which he thanked the entire faculty, staff and administration that had helped shaped the lives of the graduates throughout their academic careers. He then recounted the highlights and admirable characteristics of the Class of 2013. “They
care for and support one another and are high achievers who have raised the bar of excellence for all who follow,” said Bossert. “They have made a commitment to healthy choices, and have learned to balance academics with commitment and dedication to athletics, music and the performing arts. They are headed off to some of the most prestigious learning institutions, and some are leaving to protect our freedom as members of our military. I am confident that they will continue to impress and be successful in whatever path in life they take.” Class President Gregory Klesaris announced the class gifts from the graduates to the school, offered to help
enrich and enhance the experiences of future Earl L. Vandermeulen seniors to come. The class also began a new tradition of signing an enlarged, framed class photo to be hung in the school’s cafeteria hallway. Gregory then invited Port Jefferson teacher Laurie McMillen on stage to receive an honorary diploma from the high school for her 33 years of dedicated service to the district. McMillen recently resigned for the purpose of retirement. “We couldn’t have asked for a more caring and compassionate teacher,” said Interim Pre-K-12 Assistant Principal Leonard Bozza. “She is a role model to our entire faculty.” Valedictorian Gabriel Davis reflected on his time at Port Jefferson and the close bonds that were fostered within the loving and nurturing school community. “To the entire faculty of Port Jefferson High School – I thank you for not only bestowing upon us your wisdom and pouring your hearts into your curricula, but also for believing in us and supporting us,” he said. Bozza delivered the closing words on behalf of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy, who shared the most important things that he had learned from the graduates throughout the past year. “You can and must prepare for the tests of life by knowing who you really are and by staying true to your own moral values and ethical standards,” said Bozza. The evening concluded with the traditional cap toss and bittersweet tears from many as the high school orchestra, led by Director of Music and Fine Arts Michael Caravello, gave a powerful instrumental performance of “Secrets” by the popular group One Republic.

Stepping Up The 111 members of the Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-grade class were honored on June 20 at the school’s annual moving-up ceremony. Family and friends joined in the recognition of the graduates by faculty, staff and administration. The grade 7/8 orchestra, under the direction of orchestra teacher Christian Neubert, provided musical accompaniment throughout the evening. Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana greeted attendees and introduced eighth-grade class president Chandler Sciara, who reflected upon the year on behalf of his peers. Class trips, field days and school dances were all part of the wonderful memories that Chandler recounted as he instilled excitement for high school within his classmates. Members of the Port Jefferson Middle School faculty, PTSA and local community conducted the presentation of 30 awards that applauded students for their efforts in academics, athletics, music, fine arts, character and more.

A sea of green and gold covered the front lawn of Ward Melville High School as the Class of 2013 proceeded into this year’s commencement ceremony and took their seats in front of the school building. Led by members of the administration, Board
of Education and school faculty, the more-than-670 soon-to-be graduates walked past proud family members, friends and teachers as the high school symphonic band, led by Laura Stiegelmaier, played Pomp And Circumstance. After a performance
of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by senior Annemarie Cartwright, Principal Dr. Alan Baum introduced this year’s student speakers. Reflecting on the significance of the day and the changes that lie ahead, salutatorian Rachel
Melville. “There is a niche for everyone here,” she said. “The Ward Melville student community is diverse and accommodating of all interests. I have no doubt that we will carry our own Ward Melville experiences with us, and that they will inform our choices in the future.” She also urged her peers to not allow themselves to be defined by who they are today, but rather to build upon what they had learned to become well-rounded adults. Senior class president Rajiv Shanbhag announced that the students would be presenting tents to replace those lost during Superstorm Sandy as the class gift. Board of Education President Dr. Jeffrey Kerman extended
the School Board’s collective congratulations to the students, stating, “You should be filled with pride in your accomplishments.” Dr. Baum walked the students through the memories of their time within the district. “Whatever journey each of you took to assemble here today,” he said, “you have reached this milestone together as the Class of 2013.” After each graduate received his or her diploma, student government president Yaela Collins led the class in the traditional turning of the tassels, after which they jubilantly tossed their graduation caps high into the air.
