“The upbeat energy here at Stony Brook and the vision of the Cancer Center leadership is really quite amazing,” said keynote speaker Doug Ulman, a threetime cancer survivor, President and CEO of Pelotonia, and former Livestrong President and CEO. “Talking to many of you inspires me, and seeing the commitment that Stony Brook has in its mission to cure cancer should inspire all of you and future patients treated here.”

Ulman is a national cancer survivorship advocate. After overcoming chondrosarcoma during his sophomore years in college and malignant melanoma twice since, in 1997 he founded the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This non-profit organization provides support, education, and resources to young adults, their families and friends who are affected by cancer.

Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment.

McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff.

More than 800 people, including some 300 cancer survivors, came together to celebrate survivorship and life with their families and Stony Brook University Cancer Center caregivers at Stony Brook’s annual National Cancer Survivors Day. The beautiful, bright June day brought many sunny smiles to those in attendance, as well as stories of hope from survivors ranging from the very young to those in their golden years.

According to the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. National Cancer Survivors Day is a global day of celebration that takes place each June.

Despite progress made treating many forms of cancer, collectively the disease remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S. “Cancer care at Stony Brook is advancing rapidly, and we are determined to remain on the cuttingedge of treatment to cure many forms of cancer as we look to the future,” said Samuel Ryu, MD, Deputy Director, Clinical Affairs, and Chair of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

“Our Center is assembling ever-increasing teams of physicians and scientists to tackle the difficult issues of conquering cancer – teams that work together at the basic science level, translational research, and by launching new clinical trials.”

During the event introduction, Dr. Ryu said that the growth of clinical care and research at the Cancer Center is best illustrated by the coming Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. The MART, slated to be a 245,000 square foot, eight story facility,

More than 360,000 homes in Suffolk County are not sewered; the unmaintained and outdated septic systems and cesspools on these properties are contributing to nearly 70% of nitrogen pollution in the region’s waterways, including the Great South Bay. The excess nitrogen has caused harmful algal blooms, beach closures, destroyed the oncerenowned shell fishing industry and threatened the region’s ground, surface and drinking water supply.

Suffolk County was particularly recognized for the launch of its Single Family Homeowner Septic Demonstration Pilot Program in 2014 where the county selected 19 homeowners through a lottery system to receive advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems with nitrogen removal capabilities at no cost to the homeowner.

The systems include free installation, monitoring and maintenance for five years. The County will use these piloted systems to effectively test and provisionally approve systems to be used in additional homes throughout Suffolk County.

Landmark Designation

On June 7th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert joined the Yaphank Historical Society to celebrate the recent designation of the SwezeyAvey House in Yaphank as a historic landmark by the Brookhaven Town Board. The Board unanimously accepted the recommendation of the Historic District Advisory Committee to designate the house as an historic landmark at a public hearing held on March 26th, 2015. The designation recognizes that the building represents a significant and distinct contribution to the community within which it resides and ensures that the house is protected from demolition, neglect, or any

other compromising force.

The Swezey-Avey House was built circa 1843 on the scenic Carmans River in Yaphank as the homestead of Daniel Downs Swezey, owner and operator of the Swezey Saw Mill. Upon his death in 1880, his brother, Van Rensselaer Swezey continued to live at the original homestead.

Gilbert H. Swezey, Van Rensselaer’s son, grew up in the Yaphank house and became a physician. His daughter, Sarah Swezey, also chose a career in medicine. In 1911, Sarah Swezey traveled to India on missionary work where she met and eventually married Mr. H.T. Avey.

When she returned home, Dr. Avey ran her practice out of the residence. It was

during this time that the house became known as the Swezey-Avey House.

Shortly after the death of Dr. Avey in 1963, the Town of Brookhaven purchased the Swezey-Avey House. A license agreement with the Yaphank Historical Society for the use and restoration of the building was authorized and executed by the Brookhaven Town Board on April 23rd, 2013.

The celebration also featured a special art exhibit and sale of “Long Island Scenes” featuring works by plein air artists, Jeanne Salucci and Chris Taylor. Both local artists paint outdoors (en plein air) to capture different scenic and historic locations throughout Long Island.

Community Read

Port Jefferson students, teachers and parents came together recently for a Community Read event, held at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

During the event, participants spent time

discussing the book, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrock in discussion groups, led by upperclassman. As part of the event, participants were also able to ask the author questions through a Skype session, which was

set up by teacher Paige MacLeod.

The purpose of the Community Read event is to encourage and promote literacy in students, as well as to facilitate shared reading between the students and their parents.

HOUNDS ON THE SOUND - On June 20th, more than 100 dogs braved the bad weather and joined their owners for Save-A-Pet’s 16th Annual Hounds on the Sound and Pet Festival at Port Jefferson Harbor Memorial Park. Those in attendance had the opportunity to take part in the blessing of the pets, listen to live music courtesy of Act1Entertainment.net, visit some of the vendors and enjoy lunch. Those who visited Save-A-Pet’s table also had the opportunity to see the dogs that were available for adoption and learn about the benefits of adoption, as opposed to buying from a pet store.

Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation.

Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely.

Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour.

Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush.

Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t.

And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.”

My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought.

As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

subways? Subways require a special skillset. So many letters and numbers and crisscrossing routes. So much congestion. Almost zero chance to sit, or even lean against, a stationary object.

Misery. Pure misery.

And so the trek began, from one line (an “express” that made about 12 stops) to another, crammed in like sardines. Oh, the joys of commuting during rush hour.

Let’s cross that one off the bucket list. {For those inquiring readers wishing to know the status of Buddy, my betta fish, I am happy to report that he recently celebrated his four-month birthday and is still swimming maniacal laps around his bowl.}

Volunteers Recognized Students within the Port Jefferson School District were recognized at the June 9th Board of Education meeting for earning the Presidential Service Award.

The 50 students, each of whom volunteered between 50 and 100 hours of their time to the Port Jefferson community, each received a certificate and medal. This year, under the direction of parent volunteer Jackie Hull, the students logged a total of 6,000 volunteer hours with the majority of students logging an average 188 hours of service.

“It is wonderful to recognize these very civic-

The Three Village Central School District has appointed Jonathon Rufa as the new assistant principal of R.C. Murphy Junior High School, effective July 1st, 2015.

Mr. Rufa will take the reins from Kevin Finnerty, who was selected as a

Ward Melville High School assistant principal at a previous Board meeting.

Mr. Rufa is a familiar face in the district, having served as Murphy’s Dean of Students for three years and most recently as the transitional lead teacher for physical education and

athletics at both junior high schools. During this work in the district, Mr. Rufa has assisted with student and staff supervision, facilitated department meetings, as well as was engaged with daily school operations, including parent conferences, discipline and elements of student management.

He was also a member of the instructional support team.

During his tenure in Three Village, Mr. Rufa has been a valued member of the district’s coaching staff, having led the high school’s junior varsity baseball team during the springs of 2014 and 2015 as well as Murphy’s baseball team during the springs of 2012 and 2013.

Wounded Warrior Fund To conclude their inaugural school year as an official club at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club worked together to raise $400 for the Wounded Warriors Project.

To garner the funds, Port Jefferson students James Murphy and Dylan Wennerod, with the help of their advisor Jesse Rosen, organized a wellattended, after-school donation-based speedball

tournament for students and staff.

The club members hope to build on the success of the event next year and raise even more money for the Wounded Warriors.

Afterward, the scholars applied their problem solving skills in a practical workshop, conducted by museum Academic Coordinator Rick Angler.

In a special activity designed to increase scholars’ science and engineering knowledge, the teens were required to work collaboratively to apply mechanical engineering concepts.

The scholars experienced the direct effects of the mechanics of energy - how it’s generated, stored and moved - by applying the principles of potential and kinetic energy.

“One of P-TECH’s goals is to consistently offer our scholars opportunities to challenge themselves and improve their knowledge,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs.

“Dynamic lessons such as those offered by the Cradle of Aviation reinforce the skills scholars are developing in the classroom, through engaging and meaningful experiences that fundamentally support what they are learning.”
