Public Health Information Line County Executive Steve Bellone and Commissioner of Health Services Dr. James Tomarken announced today the activation of the Public Health Information Line: 631.787.2200. The Information Line is being employed to enhance continuing efforts to detect and prevent the spread of communicable illnesses in Suffolk County. The line is now available from Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“Suffolk County’s public health surveillance program is among the most robust in the country,” said Executive Bellone. “Now, as residents head outdoors in the warmer weather, we are ramping up efforts to monitor communicable diseases and keep residents informed about what

they can do to protect themselves and their families.”

“Our mission is to protect and improve the health of the public,” said Dr. Tomarken. “We do this in a variety of ways, including monitoring the health of the community, detecting and investigating health problems and hazards, educating the public, developing plans and enforcing laws. Our Public Health Information Line is one tool we use to accomplish our goals.”

The New York Sanitary Code designates over 70 communicable diseases as reportable. The illnesses of high concern at this time are Zika virus, West Nile virus and rabies virus.

Residents who think they may have been exposed to these viruses or have

questions or concerns about these illnesses are encouraged to call the Suffolk County Public Health Information Line at 631.787.2200.

Zika virus, newly emerging as a worldwide threat to public health, is spread primarily by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, through sexual transmission or transfusion.

Although Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are not present in New York State, a related species named Aedes albopictus is active in the downstate region, and may be able to effectively transmit the virus. Research is ongoing.

Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum.

Kudos to you all for seeing things my way!

On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress?

Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning?

This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup.

I know it only means one thing – bath time.

At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state.

But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so.

Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human.

Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again!

‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Volunteers are needed for the annual Good Shepherd Hospice/ Bob Sweeney Camp H.O.P.E., a two day bereavement camp for children who have lost a loved one and their surviving caregivers.

The camp program, sponsored jointly by Catholic Health Services’ Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation, will be held on July 17th and 18th on the grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport.

Swim Safety Program Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro would like to inform residents that the Suffolk County Police Athletic League is offering its “Swim for Survival Instructional Program” for those children who have no swimming experience.

The program is designed to teach basic water survival skills to children in a short period of time. This program is not for children who have had basic swimming instructions, either through the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., or Safety Swim Programs.

The Program is open to children 5 to 10 years old. The instructions will be conducted on four (4) consecutive weeks.

Certified instructors from St. Joseph’s College will provide the swim instructions at the Danzi Athletic Center on the campus of St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue.

Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 8th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue.

This year, 150 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 61 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie - a record high for this event. The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 4 ozs and was caught by Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Andy Smith. He was accompanied on the boat by his first mate, Ret. Colonial Rob Landsiedel, Major Jesse Fritz and Tech Sgt Nathan Dean from the 106th Rescue Wing - Air National Guard. Andy’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, the Ed Jakubowski Memorial Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament Award, named in honor of a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby.

“One of the best things about the event is the people you meet. In 2010 my crew consisted of Captain Jesse Fritz, Colonel Rob Landsiedel and another 106th Rescue Wing member. Since then Jesse and I have become good friends,” said Andy Smith. He continues “each year we do well and everyone goes home with dinner but this time we decided to go for the win! That meant fishing around rocks and losing multiple rigs snagging bottom. The majority of the fleet went west but we went north and east to Crane’s neck where big fish are caught.

The first fish was a 19 inch keeper and things looked promising but then the wind kicked up and we had to move to maintain the drift. On the first drift in the new spot I felt a light tug and then another, I set up on the fish and pulled a 6 lb 4 oz fish to the surface. Rob carefully netted it and we were excited. Throughout the rest of the event we kept hearing of other decent fish caught but at weigh-in we took the prize. It felt great to win but more importantly to share the victory with my crew.”

Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others,

a reunion. The Marines from Garden City presented the colors as the National Anthem was played. Then they were off... 61 boats paraded out the Smithtown Marina to meet up in the Smithtown Bay. At the stroke of 9 a.m., they were all off to their “secret” spots to try to reel in a “doormat” fluke. The weather cooperated until about noon, when for the first time, it rained on the Tournament. The bright and tough young military men and women were prepared and stuck it out.

Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag Arch provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including hot dogs and

hamburgers cooked by members of the Hauppauge Fire Department, a ‘low country boil’ complete with shellfish and corn and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided

by Ruland Road Deli (Melville).

Every participant was eligible to win incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations.

The grand prize was donated by SIMRAD, who donated a NSS7 Evo2 GPS Fishfinder Combo. Additional grand prizes included custom engraved military reels from Wes Seigler at TRUTH Reels, 2 night/3 day stay at Hawks Cay Florida Keys Resort, 55” and 40” TV’s and kayaks. Other prizes included 60 fishing rod and reel combos, tickets to a Billy Joel concert along with autographed Billy Joel

CD’s and memorabilia, baseball tickets to see the Yankees and the Mets, K2 coolers, Weber grills, Bose speakers, and the list goes on. There were over 125 prizes raffled off thanks to generous donors. L&L Wholesale Bait of Bay Shore generously donated all the spearing and squid bait distributed to all the captains for the event for the second year in a row.

Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament began eight years ago when SBYC member and Kings Park resident Mark Garry, who was inspired by the images of war, to do something to “give back” to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith and together they pooled their resources. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. Together they decided that a fishing tournament would be much more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because I always found fishing to be a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always was, I went out fishing with my boys every chance I could. This tournament is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifices U.S. military members make to protect our country.”

This unique event is free for all participants - all captains, first mates and “pink ladies” (dedicated group of helpers) are volunteers. The entire event runs on the generous donations of the sponsors.

This tournament is open to active serviceman and prior registration is required. Soldiers on the Sound Ltd. is a not for profit organization. Dead Birds: Residents are also encouraged to report sightings of dead birds, such as robins, crows, blue jays and hawks that may have been infected with the virus to the Public Health Information Line. Birds that meet the Department of Health Services’ criteria will be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Accepted bird specimens are tested for the presence of the virus in the bird population. If it is determined by health officials that a reported bird is not needed for testing or if a dead bird is discovered on a weekend, residents should take proper precautionary measures: put the dead bird into a doubled bag, using gloves and a shovel, and dispose of it in the trash. Note: Humans cannot catch West Nile virus directly from birds.

Rabies virus is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies virus, which is invariably fatal.

Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection.

Residents of all towns are asked to call the Information Line number to report raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets.

With the report of a rabid raccoon in Nassau County last March, Suffolk County has increased surveillance of raccoons in the Towns of Huntington and Babylon. Residents of those towns are asked to report: • raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets • raccoons that are

acting abnormally • raccoons that are dead for reasons other than motor-vehicle crash If you have been exposed to a bat in your home or outdoors, call the Public Health Information Line. If a bat is in your house and you have any questions about whether the bat has been in contact with people or pets, call the Information Line before releasing it and follow CDC guidelines in capturing it, avoiding any contact with the bat. Although it is estimated that only 20 percent of those who become infected with West Nile virus will develop clinically noticeable symptoms, West Nile virus can be fatal. Individuals who are most at risk for severe infection include those over 50 years of age and those with chronic illness or compromised immune systems. These individuals are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes during the season.

On June 14th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Girl Scouts Service Unit #54 Gold Award ceremony at the North Shore Public Library in Shoreham.

At the ceremony, Councilwoman Bonner presented a Certificate of Congratulations to Gold

They also included copies of any awards they received during the year, pictures, clippings of current events and a letter to their future self and parents.

Next Step The gymnasium at R.C. Murphy Junior High School and front lawn at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School were filled with proud parents, family members and friends as the buildings’ ninth-grade classes celebrated moving up to high school with ceremonies this June.

During Murphy’s ceremony, many students were honored for success in academic subjects, as

well as physical fitness, volunteer service and acts of character. Additionally, several Three Village Teachers Association monetary awards were presented, studentvocalists provided a musical interlude and the ninth-graders presented their class gift of spirit banners to decorate the school grounds. At the end of the ceremony, each student was called to the

Golden Girl dais to receive his or her moving up certificate.

At P.J. Gelinas, musicians performed a tribute to this year’s school musical, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and the selection “We’ll Never Say Goodbye.”

Student speaker Amy Lynch shared reflections of her class’ time at Gelinas, and the ninth-graders were individually presented with moving up certificates.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Girl Scout Gold Award ceremony for Skylar Intravaia at the North Shore Public Library on Tuesday, June 14th. Skylar Intravaia,

an Ambassador Girl Scout from Rocky Point, earned her Gold Award by designing and implementing a social group program for children with autism in the Rocky Point School District.

“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Skylar for receiving her Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts” said Legislator Anker.

“Through her hard work and dedication, she has overcome challenges in her life to help others and is a source of inspiration for her community.”

Skylar was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome when she was 9 yearsold and was inspired to create a project to help children in her community overcome the challenges of having autism. For the social group, she organized the meetings and carefully created specialized activities.

Interim Appointee

At its meeting on June 14th, the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education appointed Dr. Paul Casciano to serve as the district’s interim superintendent, effective July 1st, 2016.

“Dr. Casciano brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Port Jefferson School District, and the board looks forward to working with him,” said Board President Kathleen Brennan.

Dr. Casciano will serve as interim superintendent while the board continues an extensive

superintendent search with the assistance of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. “Information about the search process, as well as opportunities for input, will be shared with the staff and community in the near future,” said Brennan.

Prior to accepting this interim role in Port Jefferson, Dr. Casciano served his entire 41-year educational career within the William Floyd School District, including eight years as superintendent of schools.

The Stony Brook resident holds a bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University, a Master of Science in education from Southampton College and a professional diploma in educational leadership and administration from LIU Post. He earned his doctorate in educational administration from New York University.

Dr. Casciano is also a community leader,

serving as co-chair of Congressman Lee Zeldin’s Education Advisory Committee, past president of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics, a member of the board of directors for the William Floyd Alumni Association, and a member of the New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program.

Additionally, he serves with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the New York State Council of School Superintendents.

“I have always held the Port Jefferson School District in high regard, and I am looking forward to working with the school community and making whatever contributions I can during my term,” said Dr. Casciano.

While financial abuse and scams are believed to cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually, you can help prevent them and protect yourself.

then sowed them in the school’s courtyard. Varies planted included juniper, blueberry, coneflower, phlox, comfrey, thyme and dianthus.

Celebrating Field Day

Students at Andrew Muller Primary School in the Miller Place School District recent celebrated the upcoming culmination of the 2015-2016 school year with their annual Field Day. The students wore school

t-shirts and participated on teams in multiple obstacle course and athletic events.

Friends, family and school faculty members watched on as students showcased their physical education lessons, exercised their team-building skills and

displayed their school spirit.

Students were challenged to crawl through hula hoops and race with a partner - attached by a pool “noodle,” as part of the day’s activities.
