As a result of their academic success, 58 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students learned they have been accepted into the National Honor Society. These new members met the scholarship requirements, demonstrated their leadership and character, and served their community in a variety of ways throughout their time at the high school.

The district has traditionally conducted a “tapping ceremony” where each student is tapped on the shoulder by a current National Honor Society member, and surprised by peers, their parents and other family members at the formal candlelighting ceremony.

In a nod to that tradition and festivities, each new member was surprised at home by National Honor

Society advisers high school librarian Mary LaSita and guidance counselor Kathi Galvin, Principal Eric Haruthunian, Assistant Principal Kevin Bernier and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Christine Austen. Each student recited the Pledge of Allegiance and was presented with their National Honor Society membership card and certificate along with a thoughtful gift of candy.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled.

She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit.

Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon.

Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting.

She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.”

I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. A mini-bus will allow Eileen to carry more donations at once and take more sponsorships.

On May 27, 2020, Dominic Passaro, of Mount Sinai BSA Troop 1776 earned the rank of Eagle Scout; the highest rank bestowed upon a scout.

Through hard work and dedication to the BSA program, Dominic was able to accomplish this feat at the age of 13.

To earn Scouting’s highest award, Dominic had to earn 21 merit badges, serve as a leader in his troop and complete a community service project.

Dominic went above and beyond, completing 46 merit badges, earning him a gold and silver Eagle palm.

As an added deliverable, Dominic’s team also provided 10 vinyl/magnetic informational signs, 12 sign holders of various sizes, and several fire exit maps. The foundation has many volunteers, workers, and patrons who are blind or visually impaired and these signs have become a vital component to their safety and ability to navigate the building.

Dominic has been in scouting since 2016. He began his scouting career as a member of Pack 64 (Coram, NY), bridged over to BSA Troop 64 (Coram, NY), and then switched to Troop 1776 (Mt. Sinai, NY) in 2017. As a member of his troops, Dominic served

as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Chaplain Aide, and Troop Guide.

Dominic has earned the Arrow of Light, Parvuli Dei, and NOA Camping awards. He was also recently elected to become a member of the Order of the Arrow, BSA’s National Honor Society, and he is now a member of the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA).

Dominic is a homeschooled student going into the ninth grade. In the future, he plans to attend college and one day either become a veterinarian, own an animal sanctuary and become a wildlife rehabilitator, or something business related. In his free time, Dominic enjoys hiking, animals, reading, volunteering, bowling competitively, and being with friends and family.

Understanding Protective Respirators Respiratory protective devices are used in various industries to help block harmful contaminants from being inhaled through the nose and mouth.

Sometimes called respirators or facemasks, respiratory protective devices are approved by various agencies that aim to protect and safeguard the public. Many masks are endorsed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which

oversees the prevention of work-related illness and injury. The Food & Drug Administration also clears certain masks for their use in health care settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also approve and recommend certain respirators.

Each mask is categorized by a generalized rating.

Understanding these ratings helps people identify how

the respirator performs (how much it filters) and the situations each mask is designed for. Ratings also indicate which substances the mask is designed to resist.

The following are various types of disposable particulate respirators.

Oil resistance Particulate respirators, which the CDC notes protect only against particles - not gases or vapors are rated as N, R or P for

protection against oils. In some industries, industrial oils can degrade the filter performance.

N is not resistant to oil, R is somewhat resistant to oil, and P is strongly resistant or oil-proof.

Masks with the “N” rating are widely used in health care settings.

Filtration rating Filtration ratings refer to the ability to filter various particle sizes. Those that

filter out at least 95 percent of airborne particles, according to the NIOSH, will get a 95 rating. Those that filter out at least 99 percent get a 99 rating.

Respirators with a 100 rating filter at least 99.97 percent of particles. N-95 masks are not resistant to oil, but they do filter at least 95 percent of airborne particles.

Length of use If a respirator has not been soiled or damaged, it can be reused in certain industries

outside of the medical profession, states the CDC. However, a respirator that has been worn in the presence of infectious materials, such as those in hospital settings, should be disposed of properly after one use.

Protective respirators are essential for filtering airborne contaminants.
