Planned Spontaneity There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

In order to raise awareness of the multitude of environmental concerns plaguing the plant, R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-grade science classes completed a final quarter project focused on topics in environmental science.

During the multiweek project, the students researched a current environmental issue or concern, conducted an environmental experiment or completed a citizen science project aimed at making the world a safer, healthier place. Projects spanned such topics as the study of bacteria and pollution in Long Island waters, tips for prevention wildfires and soils effect on the PH of water.

At the completion of their work, each student was required to visually display their findings on presentation boards.

There are things we will take with us to the grave.

The person I do to the world portray Is what in people’s memory will stay.

What about actions I never did share That even I myself hardly to admit do dare?

I cannot believe I am the only one; Others too hide bad actions secretly done.

The historic medieval time period came to life for Rocky Point Middle School sixth-grade students as they participated in an interactive themed week as part of their grade-level unit of study.

With the help of their teachers, the students learned about the Middle Ages in each of their core subject areas and completed hands-on projects to reinforce the topics. Throughout the

study, they visited the Medieval Times show in New Jersey, helped to construct decorative exterior castle walls outside classrooms and even fashioned personal shields reflecting their interests. Additionally, they researched and created information sheets, which they displayed throughout the school, to showcase lesser known facts about the time period.

Connecting the subject

to all curricular areas, teachers discussed such things as the bubonic plague during health classes and worked to construct catapults during science. The weeklong initiative capped off with a jester performance, which focused on the comical routines famous during the time period.

The project was coordinated by teacher David Murphy and a committee of teachers.

We all like to present our image in the best light, Face shortcomings only in the dark of night.

Not yet proven that one day we face a judge Or if earthly past will ever come to matter much.

How can one deity know every one’s acts?

Let’s assume the theory about Adam and Eve is true...

Lots of people will come, maybe a few.

To her it won’t matter; it’s a day in the sun.

She had to do this so long; she had shunned To depart with the memories, some happy some sad.

When the whole thing is over, she’ll be inwardly glad The clutter was conquered.

Now her mind she can rest; Space is a blessing worthy the quest.

There were catapults, wind machines, a drawbridge, clocks, and other purposeful creations.

Mr. Nathai said, “The students have very creative ideas but ultimately they had to be able to actually make the project. We have all the tools they need to construct their projects.”

Nathai was pleased that many students recycled materials to build boats, planes, bridges, and catapults.

Everyone had their own personal reason for building their project.

Daniel made a crab trap because it provides him with food; Esteven felt the same way. He built a candy machine so he could eat candy all day!

Frank designed a moveable drawbridge. He said, “I like the mechanics of drawbridges and I am fascinated by the way they work.” He learned how to construct things with wood and how electrical energy works.

Jenna built a longboard because she likes to ride them. “They are extremely expensive,” she said. “It was a lot of fun creating my very own longboard.”

The academic program at JAC provides an alternate approach to learning and serves a special education population.

Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Jefferson Academic Center (JAC) applied the knowledge and skills they learned in technology class to construct projects for the Eighth Grade Annual Technology Expo held at the conclusion of the school year. Technology Teacher Ramesh Nathai said, “They had freedom to design whatever they wanted. We just had to make sure we could get the materials or make the materials necessary to build it.”

The expo provides an opportunity for the eighth grade students to share their ideas and projects with students in the sixth and seventh grade.

Nathai said, “We employ a specific problem solving method in the class.

Students must identify a problem, brainstorm, design, and build the idea.

They test and evaluate what they’ve built, share the solution, and, if necessary, do a redesign. The students are very motivated to learn using this methodology.”

Principal Chris Williams said, “Mr. Nathai brings the magic to life in the technology room. He keeps the students engaged with hands-on projects. When the sixth and seventh grade students see and experience the projects created by the eighth graders, they want to be in the tech program, and they

Relay for Rocky Point

Faculty Honored On Saturday, June 11th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined hundreds of local residents at the 16th annual Relay for Life of Rocky Point at the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School.

Relay for Life is a community fundraised where teams of 10-15 people participate in a relay-style walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society. In 2001, Rocky Point hosted the first Relay for Life in Suffolk County and has inspired many more community across Long

Island to participate.

“I would like to thank the volunteers and business sponsors for their dedication to Relay for Life of Rocky Point,” said Legislator Anker. “This wonderful event raises thousands of dollars every year and is also a wonderful way for the community to show their support for those who have been affected by cancer.”

This year, Relay for Life of Rocky Point raised over $22,000 for the American Cancer Society. Marietta Turbane, a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

and breast cancer, was the keynote survivor speaker.

At its June 14th meeting, the Port Jefferson Board of Education bid a warm farewell to three retiring employees and congratulated three educators on receiving tenure.

During the meeting, district administrators stood to speak highly of science teacher Peter Burawa, custodian supervisor Gene Holland and teaching assistant Ann Famiano, each of whom will be retiring this June.

“You have all left your mark on the district and you will be a tough

act to follow,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert.

After heartfelt goodbyes, the district approved tenure for special education teacher Michelle Landetta, science teacher Greg Gorniok and teaching assistant Sonia Pinero.

In addressing the newly tenured employees, Dr. Bossert said, “Each of you represent the core values of our school district and we are confident that you will continue to serve our community and students well in the future.”

Additionally, the board of

education took a moment to recognize Dr. Bossert, who will be stepping down from his position to join the Elwood School District at the end of the school year.

“It is safe to say that you are leaving Port Jefferson in a much better place than when you arrived,” said Mark Doyle, board of education vice president.

“You have cultivated relationships, represented us well and our district is in a strong financial situation. Thank you.”

Top Honors After capturing victories on the regional and state levels, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s and Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad teams represented the school district and Long Island at the national tournament this spring.

As a result of their dedication and talents, Gelinas placed 10th in the nation and took home medals in the following events: Fossils, third place; Reach for the Stars, third place; Bio Process Lab, fourth place; Crave the

Wave, fifth place; Disease Detective, second place; Food Science, second place; and Scrambler, fifth place. Ward Melville placed 24th in the nation and won medals in the following events: Experimental Design, first place and Write It/Do It, fifth place.

The National Science Olympiad Tournament was held at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and each division (middle and high school) included 60 teams from nearly every state in the nation. Two teams from New York qualified for

Top Score Times Two the national tournament by placing first or second in the state contest. Each team consisted of 15 members who competed in 23 events. Medals were awarded to the top six places for each event.

Earlier this year, Gelinas placed first in the Eastern LI Regional Tournament and first in New York State. Ward Melville was ranked first at the Eastern Long Island Regional competition and second in New York State.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Eric Kilgore and freshman Annalisa Welinder were presented with mathematics awards at the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association dinner held this spring.

The young

mathematicians were recognized for demonstrating their mastery in mathematics at the Suffolk County Math contest by leading their teammates to a third-place finish in Division 1.

Kilgore, captain of the team and repeat champion,

finished the season with a score of 24 out of 30.

Welinder ended her first season with a score of 17.

Additionally, she earned a first-place award with the highest score in the precalculus event.

Fit for a Bird As part of an interdisciplinary project, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Advanced Placement Environmental Science students in Jonathan Maletta’s class investigated native bird species and then constructed birdhouses for the local fowl.

The students took

further steps to understand the population dynamics of birds by registering their bird houses with Cornell’s NestWatch program, which tracks trends in the reproductive biology of birds. Among the native species studied were blackcapped chickadees and house wrens.

Through the activity, and

with the help of technology teachers Brian Chalmers and Robert Dunlop, the students also learned about the proper use of power tools and how to properly design the houses to keep out invasive species.

“I really enjoyed participating in this collaborative project,” said student Bella Mungioli.

Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff gathered together to celebrate the nation’s stars and stripes during a patriotic Flag Day celebration on June 14th.

To commence the program, members of the Girl Scouts proudly marched through the crowd displaying decorative flags while members of the Boy Scouts assisted several

veterans with a flag raising ceremony. Each student in attendance proudly held a miniature American flag at their seats throughout the program and most supported their patriotism by wearing clothing showcasing the nation’s colors – red, white and blue.

The event featured several musical selections performed by the school’s

advanced band and younger grade levels, as well as an informative presentation on America’s White Table of Remembrance and the recipe for an American flag. The winners of the building’s writing and art contests were announced and each student was presented with a commemorative certificate and American flag from the veterans in attendance.

Earlier this year, Minnesauke Elementary School’s and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s National Junior Art Honor Societies collaborated to create 24 artistically painted lily pad shaped platforms for the bottoms of IV stands and recently

donated the creations to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

The heavy-duty wooden bases aim to provide longterm pediatric patients with a fun surface to sit and ride upon while walking through the hospital hallways; an alternative to

traditional wheelchairs.

Peer Support Project

On June 11th, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) joined the Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project for their 3rd Annual Day of Wellness at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches.

The event is a joint initiative of the Suffolk County United Veterans and Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency that offers demonstrations and treatment presentations for veterans dealing with health related issues and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

More than 100 veterans

and family members were in attendance, with 40 service providers and vendors on display for participants to engage.

The Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project believes that all people, regardless of past experiences, psychiatric diagnosis, trauma history, criminal proceedings, race, age, gender, sexual orientation or substance abuse history have the capacity to recover from stress related to their experience and regain independence.

Peer support is an

“evidence-based practice” under the Federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a Division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dwyer Project is starting its fourth year of serving veterans, service members, and their families with post-service transitional issues to include PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Breaking Ground Setauket Fire District officially broke ground on its community approved “New Era” construction project this June as it began building a new headquarters facility, which is projected to provided greener and more efficient fire services for the surrounding community.

The $14.9 million project will renovate and expand the 1935 firehouse for the first time in more than 40 years.

Planned projects include relocating and expanding the fire truck bays from Main Street to Old Town Road, addressing spatial limitations for emergency equipment, while also completing renovations

aimed at meeting current ADA regulations, OSHA regulations and NFPA recommendations.

“This building not only symbolizes our renewed commitment to this community,” explained District Manager David Sterne. “It underlines the community’s decision to invest in the future of the Setauket Fire Department for many years to come.

While we watch this project take shape, we will have a sense of pride in the fact that we are building an efficient and effective structure that meets our needs for the present and future, and does so in a way that is financially responsible.”

Local elected officials, including Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn, State Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine joined members of the district and department as they donned hardhats and ceremonially dug shovels into the future site of the Setauket Fire District headquarters.

Responsible for more than 30,000 residents and 700 businesses, the fire district responds to more than 3,420 calls annually within its 28-square mile service area.

Camp Ready Rocky Point High School’s Interact Service Club regularly work to give back to their school and community and recently extended that service to help beautify the grounds at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

With the help of their adviser Margaret Messinetti and several district administrators, the club members helped rake

leaves, weed flowerbeds, lay down mulch, paint and general cleanup duties.

Everyone worked hard and also managed to have fun.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality, dignity and maximum

Second grade students at Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently experienced 19th century America as they walked through a recreated village - visiting a historic farm, schoolhouse, general store

and homes.

During the experience, students learned about agricultural skills, crafts and domestic activities of the era. Skilled craftsmen, women and costumed guides also helped demonstrate the trades of

independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation and education in a summertime environment.

Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cookouts, swimming and boating.

“I found it very interesting to visually see how many battles there were in the Civil War,” said Ally Larson. “I really

love American history and found it so interesting to learn how divided the country was at the time of the Civil War and how many lives were lost,” added Thomas Loughlin.

This year’s Living Book Project centered on the book “Bull Run,” and joined district fifthgraders together in a day of conversation, collaborative work and interactive workshops.
