Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services.

One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income.

After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered.

As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

happily as the volunteers in their orange “PSEG Long Island Community Partners” shirts spiffed up their home. Morris Koffer shared that he was filled with nothing but joy and gratitude.

“I’m very happy for the help. I’m very surprised; very thankful,” he said. “I never expect anything from anyone because I lived my life helping others.”

Morris Koffer was 21 years old and still training to become an Army Air Corps radio communication specialist when Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. After his wartime service, Morris Koffer worked in a school teaching radio broadcasting, and later installed TV antennas on the roofs of homes until he was 86. He retired from that profession after he was injured in a fall.

The PSEG Long Island volunteers took time to

sit with Morris Koffer and look at photos of him from the 1940s and 50s while he shared stories of his time in the Army Air Corps.

This is not the first time that a PSEG Long Island cleanup team has volunteered at the Koffer home. Last year, a dozen volunteers cleared yard waste, twigs, old leaves and other debris from the property and inside the home. The group filled a 20-yard dumpster and vowed to return if they were needed.

At the time, volunteers noticed the Koffers’ American flag was tattered.

They removed it and hung a brand new flag while Morris Koffer looked on with pride.

Since that day, when he returns home from medical appointments and sees the flag, Morris Koffer says he thinks of the generosity of the PSEG Long Island volunteers and how they helped him and his wife.

“I am so proud of the way our employees show they care about our customers,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience and utility marketing.

“Participating in a community service activity like this, especially helping someone who has touched so many lives, is rewarding for both our employees and

On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 2019, 20 PSEG Long Island employees returned to the home of a World War II veteran and his wife to do a spring cleaning.

The employee-volunteers performed many tasks for 96-year-old Morris Koffer and his 89-year-old wife, Edith, such as repairing screen doors, replacing a broken window pane and discarding an old hospital bed that was no longer needed. Interior railings were repaired and painted, floors were mopped, bathrooms scoured and the kitchen scrubbed.

Some employees also joined Koffer in the basement to help him discard unwanted items that he and his family had collected more than five decades. Books, some dating back to the 1940s, will be donated to a local senior center.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker announces the schedule for the 2019 Downtown Rocky Point Summer Concert Series, hosted in conjunction with Rocky Point VFW Post 6249.

Four concerts will be held at St. Anthony’s of Padua Parish in downtown Rocky Point (614 Rt.25A, Rocky Point). The concerts will be held during July and August and will begin at 7:00pm. The concerts draw thousands of attendees and help support local

businesses.

Admission is free and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, a nonperishable food item for Long Island Cares, and an unwrapped toy for Lily’s Toy House Holiday Drive.

“The Summer Concert Series provides a wonderful way for families and residents to enjoy local musical performances,” said Legislator Anker. “I encourage residents to join me at the concerts and to take advantage of the wonderful shops and

restaurants in downtown Rocky Point.”

Setauket Elementary School students are brushing up on their foundational mathematics skills as part of a fun activity organized by school math specialist Lisa Wall.

In the spirit of the spring season, Ms. Wall created an egg hunt activity for all grade 1-5 students that could be conducted

in individual classrooms.

Hidden in the 32 eggs were math questions specifically targeted to each grade level and aligned with the district’s Go Math program. After discovering the hidden eggs, the students worked independently to solve the challenge.

Eagles Soar To The Top As a result of 13 years of hard work, determination and scholastic commitment, Rocky Point High School seniors Bryant Liu and Josh Vogel have been named the Class of 2019 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Bryant is an exceptional student whose character, leadership and service experiences set him apart from his peers. He has taken 11 advanced placement courses and

was recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction as well as was named an Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program for exceptional academic promise.

Bryant is an accomplished, talented musician and has received many honors in this area.

He plays bass clarinet and trombone, is a section leader in the marching band and is a talented

level 6 pianist and the first student from Rocky Point to be named an AllState pianist, one of only 12 in the state during his sophomore year. He received the Piano National Guild Supreme Pupil Award, placed second at the American Fine Arts Festival at Carnegie Hall, and receive honorable mention at the American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music. In his free time, he also served

with a weighted average of 104.69 and is bound for the University of Southern California, where he will pursue a career in economics and mathematics.

Josh is a dedicated scholar, athlete, actor and a very talented musician. He was named a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship program, Advanced Placement Scholar with Honors and will be graduating with a grade point average of 104.51.

A gifted singer, Josh has been acknowledged with many honors and awards throughout is four years of high school, including being invited to perform at the SCMEA All-County Music Festival in the Mixed Chorus, the NYSCAME All County Music Festival, Mixed Chorus and the NYSSMA All State Conference, Mixed Chorus. This year, Josh was selected to

participate in NAFME AllNational Honor Ensembles Mixed Choir that took place in Orlando, Florida, making Rocky Point history as the first district student to participate at this level. Josh was the co-section leader of the French horns and bass clarinets in the marching band and participated in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the Suffolk Symphonic Choir.

He has also held a number of leadership roles in the school community, including serving as the president of his class for three years and as a member in the Human Rights, Athletes Helping Athletes and Compassion Without Borders Clubs as well as the National Honor Society and Thespian Honor Society.

Josh will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall, where he will be studying government.

Bryant finds time to balance his studies with many additional extracurricular activities.

He is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Math Team, Robotics Team and he participated the Pit Orchestra for the high school musical. He also participated on the varsity tennis and winter track teams.

Outside of school, Bryant worked as an intern at Brookhaven National Laboratory and participated at the Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University. He also works at the Chinese Learning Center at Stony Brook where he teaches language and culture to younger students.

Schools Support ALS Ride For Life Several schools across Three Village helped to support a worthy cause this May, as they raised funds and organized pep rallies to support the ALS Ride for Life.

At Arrowhead Elementary School, students and staff made signs to support the ride’s journey to Washington, D.C., which they displayed outside around the bus circle as the group visited the building on its way to New York City.

Earlier this year, Ride for Life founder Chris Pendergast visited

Arrowhead to present information about ALS and the Ride for Life. Following the moving assembly, the student body vowed to organize several fundraisers to support the cause.

The student council organized a fundraiser called “Ride for the Ride.”

Students gained sponsors to donate funds in exchange for the students riding their bike, scooter or skateboard for 30 minutes. Gina Schwartz’s fourth grade class organized an ALS spirit week leading up to the day

of the Ride for Life arrival and collected donations at lunchtime today. Fifth grade students organized a Dimes for Dollars fundraiser. Collaboratively, the school collected $1,261 to support the cause.

Each May, in honor of ALS Awareness Month, the ALS Ride for Life travels across Long Island during the course of several days.
