.S. Mount Elementary School’s third through sixth grade students had the chance to learn about a wide variety of professions during the building’s annual Career Lab program. Local professionals, many of whom are parents of Mount students, conducted interactive and informative workshops throughout the morning program. A total of sixteen different professionals volunteered during this year’s program.

Models from Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, recently walked the runway in the latest styles as part of ACLD’s 2015 Spring Soiree at The Woodlands in Woodbury.

Of the 12 women and six men who strolled the Soiree runway, 14 have developmental disabilities and receive support from ACLD. “Our individuals and their needs are as unique as the fashions they wear today,” said John J. Genova, Treasurer of ACLD’s Board of Trustees, and one of those who escorted models on the runway. “ACLD’s job is to ensure we meet those needs and be prepared to support their dreams and aspirations for tomorrow.”

The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is holding its first annual golf outing on Friday, June 26th, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club at 105 Clancy Road in Manorville. Guests will enjoy this beautiful and challenging course with a barbeque lunch and full dinner after play.

This is the second annual golf outing to support The Coalition’s efforts to help the victims of bullying and their families. This event is very important because it make it possible to assist in paying for programs and services provided to help children and their families cope with and recover from instances of bullying. Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day.

What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied?

We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint.

Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time.

Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless.

The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you.

Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer.

Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Science Fair Winners then asking a sample of 20 people to describe the flavor tasted. All 20 subjects recorded that the yellow beverage tasted like lemon and green tasted like lime, and 14 recorded that red tasted like cherry and purple tasted like grape. Also of note was that 80 percent of the subjects stated that yellow was their favorite beverage because they believed it tasted like lemon.

“We’re really thrilled with Spencer’s performance, creativity and knowledge of the scientific method,” said Donna Bettinelli, the Director of Science at Bay Shore Schools. She accompanied Asofsky and his family to the presentation of his proclamation at the Legislature.

Asofsky is the son of Steven and Mary Asofsky and grandson of Madeleine and Paul Boghosian.

Other winners of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair were as follows: Kindergarten: Justyn Harrison of Middle Island,

who attends Charles E. Walters Elementary School. He is the son of Greg and Kymara Harrison. His project, “Chelsea’s Favorite Treat,” examined whether dogs had a preference in treats.

He found that his dog, Chelsea, had a consistent preference for cheesewrapped snacks.

First grade: Jennifer Tiskowitz of Rocky Point, who attends Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. She is the daughter of Terri Dietz and Jon Tiskowitz. Her project, “Keep My Craft Colorful,” tested whether household products could be used to prevent construction paper from fading. Of the substances she tested, Pledge furniture polish was the most effective at preserving color.

Second grade: Mark Burns, Jr. of Baiting Hollow, who attends Riley Avenue Elementary School. He is the son of Mark Burns, Sr. and Danielle Burns.

His project, “Snow Problem,” sought to find an environmentally-friendly

alternative to salt for use in melting ice. Of the substances he tested, pickle brine was the best alternative.

Third grade: Kelly Bossert of Fort Salonga, who attends Fort Salonga Elementary School. She is the daughter of Carolyn and Marc Bossert. Her project, “Don’t Let It Burn,” tested whether certain trees and shrubs spread fire more quickly than others. She found that while evergreens ignite quickly, deciduous plants take longer to ignite

and can be extinguished more quickly.

Fourth grade: Ella Causin of Oakdale, who attends Idle Hour Elementary School. She is the daughter of Richard and Jennifer Causin.

Her project, “Slippery Sidewalks,” tested the efficacy of various substances at melting ice. Of the substances she tested, she found rock salt melted ice the most quickly.

Fifth grade: Jack Soldano of Miller Place, who attends Laddie A.

Decker Sound Beach School. He is son of Cristin and Steven Soldano.

His project, “Compost Conundrum,” examined whether composting significantly affected the growth of plants. Although his findings did not make a strong case for the use of compost to stimulate plant growth, he stumbled across several “unexpected discoveries,” including the “resurrection” of a cucumber plant from cucumber seeds in compost.

The Suffolk County Legislature last week recognized the winners of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 2015 Elementary School Science Fair. Over 100 Suffolk County schools participate each year, with entrants ranging in age from kindergarten through sixth grade.

“I am honored to congratulate these promising young scientists,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory.

“The key to solving some of our greatest challenges lies in science, and I commend Brookhaven National Laboratory for making this investment both in these young people and in our collective future.”

Spencer Asofsky, who attends Bay Shore Middle School, was the sixth grade winner. Asofsky, who said he had always been a “picky eater,” wondered whether color affected a person’s perspective on taste.

He constructed his experiment by dying lemon-lime seltzer with different food colorings,

Math-Tastic Several Port Jefferson School District students recently proved their smarts when it comes to correctly answering a multitude of math questions.

Among these students is Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-grader Annalisa Welinder, who

earned a fifth place trophy after taking the Level 3 Algebra/Trig Suffolk County Math Contest test.

Fellow eighth-grader Mayu Takeuchi showed her math skills after earning a high score of 106 out of 120 after taking the AMC10 test, which is designed for high school students.

Takeuchi’s score was the highest in her school.

Additionally, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Ryan Burke qualified to take the prestigious AIME test after earning a score of 106.5 on AMC12 test. This high score was in the top 5% nationally.

“Hurricane Sandy” LONG ISLAND, NY 10/29/2012

On May 30th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Kenneth Schick and Kieran Maroney from Boy Scout Troop 244 in Rocky Point. Kenneth and Kieran attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in

the Boy Scouts of America.

For Kenneth’s Eagle project, he built a platform in the Rocky Point High School auditorium for the light and sound boards.

The project has helped the efficiency of the tech crew and has improved the appearance of the

auditorium.

Kieran’s Eagle project was an informational kiosk at the Rolling Oaks golf course. This kiosk educates golfers about the dangers of heart attacks while golfing and teaches the steps to ensure a safe golfing experience.

Festival Held Musicians from Port Jefferson Middle School’s seventh and eighth-grade orchestra earned a silver award for their performance at the NYSSMA Major

Organization Festival, held on May 28th at PatchogueMedford High School.

During the event, the musicians, led by music teacher Christian Neubert,

Ms. Austen previously served in the district as dean of students, technology integration specialist and library media specialist. She is also a member of the district’s Safety Committee, Code of Conduct Committee and Professional Development Committee, among others.

Ms. Austen, who is a mother of three, holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stony Brook University and a Master’s degree in Library Science from LIU Post. She also holds an advanced certificate in educational computing and administration from Stony Brook University and is the recipient of the 2008 C.W. Post Educator of the Year Award.

Future Glimpse W.S. Mount Elementary School’s third through sixth-grade students had the chance to learn about a wide variety of professions during the building’s Annual Career Lab program.

Local professionals, many of whom are parents

of Mount students, conducted interactive and informative workshops throughout the morning program. Featured careers included a social marking executive, physical therapist, doctor and federal law enforcement office.

Students also

learned how to become a beekeeper by observing a portable hive and tested their skills at ghost writing using their writers’ notebooks. A total of 16 different professionals volunteered during this year’s program.

The Port Jefferson School District has named Christine Austen as the new principal of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Ms. Austen as our new high school principal,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert.

“Her strong educational background will help serve her as she takes the helm at our high school and continues our tradition of educational excellence and

Ms. Austen is equally excited to take on her new role as principal of the school in which she graduated.

“It is wonderful to be given this opportunity to come home and give back to the community this way,” she said.

As principal, Ms. Austen said she plans to continue to maintain the important connection the school district has with the community and ensure that every student is college and career-ready through individualized learning opportunities.

Royal Pride shined through as the Port Jefferson School District’s athletic department hosted a college-commitment ceremony on June 3rd for student-athletes who have chosen to continue their athletic journeys at some of the nation’s top colleges this fall.

During the ceremony, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors penned their names to college commitment letters as proud parents, coaches and school administrators watched.

“These athletes have all made an enormous impact on the Port Jefferson athletic community by either being on championship teams or by setting school, state, and personal records. They each have what it takes to succeed as college athletes.

Town Hall Visit

On May 28th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright hosted Boy Scout Troop 299 from Port Jefferson Station for a Town Hall visit during which time they worked on requirements for

their Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.

In an interactive session, Councilwoman Cartright reviewed the levels of government from federal down to local municipalities. The boys

each raised questions about particular issues including housing, the environment and changes to the community. The night finished with a tour of Town Hall.

Port Jeff Val Honored School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. Noah Davis, valedictorian of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2015, attended the event with his parents, Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert and Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy.

The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella.

Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta A. Gerold, SCSSA president and Middle Country School District superintendent of schools; Susan A. Schnebel, SCSSA president-elect and Islip School District superintendent of schools; Dr. Charles T. Russo, SCSSA vice president and East Moriches School District superintendent of schools; and Lars Clemensen,

Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive Keynote speaker Roger Tilles, a member of the New York a certificate and gift of recognition. During their State Board of Regents, encouraged the valedictorians to acknowledgment, the universities they plan on attending were announced, along with their intended majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Duke University, Fordham University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Villanova University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate partners also awarded 10 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services.

This was the only event in which the Class of 2015 valedictorians were honored together, and it was a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance. always put things in perspective, develop a backbone, become proactive and involved, use imagination and creativity to propel forward, and find a job that matters.

Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently held a shoe drive at North Shore University Hospital.

Dr. Carlson also thanked the Director of Volunteer Services and head of the volunteer department at the hospital Lisa Briman and Justine Lewis for their assistance during the 13-day shoe drive.

Since it began in 2010, Shoes For All has collected over 30,000 pairs of shoes for the community.

The Three Village Central School District Board of Education has appointed Nicholas Schroeder as the new Interim Executive Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. Mr. Schroeder will begin his work in the

ensuing years. He served as the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics for the Smithtown Central School District from 1987-2003 and has remained active in the field since, serving in an interim position for several school districts.

In addition to his administrative experience, Mr. Schroeder has coached various sports throughout his career, including high school football and basketball as well as college lacrosse. He was inducted into the Suffolk Sport Hall of Fame in 2014 and was named the New York State district on July 1st, 2015.
