I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. This is our goal at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers each and every week, and we hope that you – as readers – can always find something you enjoy within these pages.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 1 I FISH NY program will hold a free fishing clinic on Father’s Day weekend, Saturday, June 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., DEC Regional Director Carrie Meek Gallagher announced today. DEC is partnering with the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s Schiff Scout Reservation Director Matt Conlon to offer a family oriented fishing event with instruction in fishing ethics and techniques. “Fishing is a longstanding tradition throughout the year on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Meek Gallagher said. “Fishing can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for families and people of all ages, because it allows participants to get outside

and take advantage of the nice weather right in their backyards.” The clinic will be held at Deep Pond at the Schiff Scout Reservation, 1606 Wading River Manor Road, Wading River. The reservation is owned by the Boy Scouts of America Theodore Roosevelt Council. Free loaner fishing rods and bait will be supplied by I FISH NY with fishing instruction by DEC staff. The event will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with basic “how to” fishing instruction and fish identification. A brief discussion on the challenges and techniques of fishing will be included. This event is geared toward ages 10 and up, including families, individuals, beginners, and experts. No fishing license is required for this event. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the

Rocky Point Middle School’s sixth-grade GATES students were recently honored by Brookhaven National Labs for their participation in the Open Space Stewardship Program. Throughout the year, the students worked on various projects relating to the Rocky Point Pine Barrens, including collecting weather data, collecting and analyzing soil sample, collecting plant specimens and sequencing their DNA. Additionally, they

learned about how Long Island was formed, about Long Island’s geology and aquifers, and even built their own “aquifers in a cup” and modeled how kettle holes form when glaciers melt. Before sequencing the DNA of the plants they collected, the students learned how DNA replicates itself and how Polymerase chain reaction works to amplify DNA for analysis. They learned the proper micropipetting technique and completed

their own procedures to prepare their specimens for sequencing. The techniques and equipment used are truly cutting edge and these students were exceptional at learning and utilizing these difficult procedures. The students collaboratively presented their work during a celebration this spring at BNL, where they detailed their results using a poster they had created.

A New Spin on Familiar Stories Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School kindergarten students in Karen Nicholson’s class put a new spin on a few familiar stories when they performed the original play “Wolf and the Little Red Hen.” The play, which was

written by Ms. Nicholson, followed the journey of the Big Bad Wolf as he journeys through Fairytale Land and met several iconic children’s storybook characters, including the Three Little Pigs, Peter and Little Red Riding Hood. The play’s song and

Fables Come to Life More than 500 Miller Place School District kindergarten through second grade students at Andrew Muller Primary School recently came together for a lively interactive puppet show hosted by Theatreworks’ Jim West. Acting as Greek storyteller Aesop, West and

his dog Moral acted out Aesop’s Fables with largescale colorful puppets. Some of the Fables West performed include ‘The Lion and the Mouse,’ ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ and ‘The Fox and the Grapes.’ Students also listened to classical music from Scarlatti, Beethoven and Chopin during the show

On June 6th, more than 400 residents attended the sixth annual Job Fair held at Brookhaven Town Hall. Inspiration for New Mural

In one of their last acts before moving up to junior high school, Setauket Elementary School’s sixthgrade class came together to create an exquisite mural inspired by two paintings by local artist Doug Reina. Not only did the students lend their artistic skills to

the project, they also met with Mr. Reina and learned how he chooses the locations for his artwork. During his visit, Mr. Reina also explained his process of painting and provided the students with feedback on their replicas of his work. This year’s mural

Joseph A. Edger Intermediate School thirdgraders in Becky Pagnotta’s class had their lessons on biographies come to life this spring as they took part in an interactive human wax museum. Leading up to the event, the students spent four weeks studying an individual of their choosing, constructing

costumes and composing original biographical reports based on their research. On the day of the museum, the students dressed as their chosen figure and delivered a brief history of the individual and explained why they are important icons. The class’ wax museum featured such iconic figures as founding

father, George Washington, pop sensation Taylor Swift, Yankee’s baseball player Derek Jeter, Elvis Presley and accomplished scientist Marie Curie. The cross-curricular project enriched the students’ study of the subject matter with impressive public speaking, research and report composition skills.

The Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School’s fifth grade band recently performed during a Long Island Ducks game at Ducks Stadium. The students performed a seven minute set, which included

songs they have learned throughout the year. This is the third year in a row that the fifth grade band has opened for the Long Island Ducks, a baseball team in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. The

band’s participation in this program is part of a Miller Place School District initiative to provide diverse platforms for students to showcase their artistic and musical talents.

A Tree of Recognition Rocky Point High School life skills students who are enrolled in Robert Ciaccio’s technology course recently collaborated with those students in John Schumacher’s Principals of Engineering class to construct a lasting legacy for the school. Working together, the students created a wooden “Up-Standers Tree”

completed with 50 leaves that will bear the names of students who are “caught” being good. The students were responsible for many aspects of creating the project, including the design, layout and construction, such as sawing, sanding and painting. Beginning next school year, teachers and staff

members will be asked to recommend students at the high school who exhibit positive behaviors and go above and beyond what is expected to help others and to help foster a positive school environment. The names of these individuals will be added to the leaves of the tree and remain on display for all to see and celebrate.

Making Mathematical Memories Setauket Elementary School first-graders are working to build mathematical fluency and numeral understanding as part of the school’s math club. The club, which has been meeting weekly before school, enables students to work with teachers Lisa Wall and Christine

Beck to play a variety of differentiated math games focused on such concepts as numerical operations, regrouping and multiples. After the teachers model the game and discuss the proper strategy, the students work in small groups to play at least two different games each session.

Fifth-graders at the school volunteer to assist with the club for community service hours and help to mentor the younger students as they play the games. A similar club was held earlier this year for kindergarten students. Both clubs met for 11 sessions.

Celebrating Writers This spring, the literary and artistic talents of Rocky Point High School and Rocky Point Middle School were celebrated and honored during two annual competitions. Nearly 40 high school students earned high praise during this year’s Mark Twain Contest in the category of writing or art. For writing, students are awarded by grade level and in the categories of

prose and poetry. For art, students are also awarded by grade level as well as in the categories of photography and digital imaging. Students who are selected as winners were invited to the awards ceremony at the Meadow Club and received a medal as well as a booklet published with all of the winning entries. At the middle school, close to 70 students were

named winners in the Lois Lowry Literary and Art Contest. The event, which was was started in the middle school in 2003, is similar to the high school’s Mark Twain literary and art contest as students are honored for written and artistic pieces. Those named winners were honored at an ice cream social event in June and had their work published in a commemorative book.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT GOLFER - Earl L. Vandermeulen High School golf team member Shane DeVincenzo capped off a tremendous season with a sixth-place finish in the NYSPHAA high school golf championship, held at Cornell University. Re-enacting History Historical lessons came to life before the eyes of Rocky Point Middle School seventh-grade students in Gregory Havranek social studies class as they recently performed a Civil War Re-enactment of Pickett’s Charge which was during the Battle of Gettysburg. During the activity,

students dressed up in the colors for their sides; those representing the North wore blue and the South wore grey or white. The southern students marched across the battlefield toward the northern line where they demonstrated the proper way of marching in the Civil War while

the confederate soldiers recreated the “Rebel Yell” to intimidate the north. The students realized how difficult it would have been for 15,000 confederate soldiers to march with no protection to the northern line and how the failure at Pickett’s Charge was a turning point in the Civil War.

The not-for-profit Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc. (BESFI) recently announced the top winners of its annual scholarship competition held June 4th, 2017 in conjunction with the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop. The competition was judged by a panel of five distinguished adjudicators who awarded 16 scholarships totaling $5,000. Senior Division winners were by rank: tied for 1st with identical scores were Diana Atoian of Holbrook and Brianna Jimenez of East Setauket who were awarded $600.00 each with

3rd place going to Ava Aubé of Hampton Bays with an award of $425. Junior Division winners were led by Lara Caraiani of St. James with an award of $600 followed by Madison Valenta of Port Jefferson, 2nd, who garnered $500 and 3rd place was captured by Alana Samara of Port Jefferson who received a $325.00 scholarship. According to BESFI President Dimitri Papadakos, “this year’s competition was difficult to judge due to the overall quality of the competitors. Both divisions were wellrepresented resulting

in across-the-board scholarship recipients.” Celebrating its thirtyeighth anniversary, the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop is a nationally recognized six week ballet program held annually during the last three weeks of July and three weeks in August. The three division program features Advanced, Advanced/Intermediate and Intermediate levels. Daily classes are given by renowned instructors drawn from diverse ballet companies such
