The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution.

After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Last year’s event was a huge success and they are looking forward to an even bigger and better turnout this year!

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. Student Government Heads To D.C. Ward Melville High School’s Student Government, along with advisers Virginia Edgar, Allison Kane and Dianne Kraemer, explored Washington, D.C. as part of the group’s Leadership Development initiative.

With the help of Congressman Lee Zeldin, the students were given a tour of the U.S. Capitol building before

visiting a large number of memorials, including the Lincoln, Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., FDR, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, 9/11 and Air Force Memorials.

The group also honored a somber and reflective moment at Arlington Cemetery where they watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

They also had a chance to visit the Newseum, seeing firsthand historical pieces, like a section of the Berlin Wall with a guard tower looming behind.

“It was a great trip for our students as they were able to experience government in action and have become excited for so many opportunities in the STUDENT GOVERNMENT HEADS TO D.C. - Ward Melville High School future,” said Ms. Kraemer.

More Than 500 Attend Business Event The 12th annual Strictly Business event, held on May 7, featured more than 95 businesses and business organizations and welcomed more than

500 attendees. The event was created in partnership with the library’s Miller Business Center, the Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce and

the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition to promote local businesses and encourage economic development in the region.

On Saturday, May 18, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Rocky Point Fire Department’s 62nd Annual Inspection and Installation Dinner at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.

Legislator Anker joined Town of Brookhaven

Councilwoman Jane Bonner and the Board of Fire Commissioners in honoring the volunteer officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel of the Rocky Point Fire Department and for their years of service.

“It is always a pleasure to honor our firefighters every year at the annual installation dinner,” said Legislator Anker. “I thank them for their continued service and the hard work they do to keep our communities safe.”

Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School second grade students in Stacy Iberger’s class recently helped to show gratitude for the troops serving overseas in honor of Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month.

Through the generosity of the class’ families, the students collected

hundreds of toiletry items, snacks and a variety of games and used those donations to create care packages for soldiers.

With the help of local veterans, Councilwoman Jane Bonner, district administrators and volunteers, the students made enough care packages to fill 22 large boxes of

packages. Each package included a mixture of the donated items as well as a hand-written thank-you letter from the students.

The care packages were sent to the soldiers in honor of SSGT Louis Bonacasa, who was killed in action several years ago and is the father of a current student in Ms. Iberger’s class.
