Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island.

One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to finding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love.

Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care.

Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County.

Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home.

In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child.

Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Zarya Shaikh, who combined her scholarly pursuits in biochemistry and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies to fill a gap in healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community.

Zarya collaborated with Stony Brook friends and alumni in various fields— including physics—to create “Queer Diagnosis: The LGBTQ+ Health Podcast.”

Angel Velazquez, who worked across disciplines and institutions to start the Stony Brook chapter of ColorStack— an organization that focuses on supporting and increasing the number of Black, Latinx, and Native American students in the field of computer science.

The student speaker for the Class of 2022 was Ahmed Syed, a biology major, who spoke about his Stony Brook tradition: After his parents moved to the United States from India, his oldest brother earned his MD from Stony Brook and his other two brothers also graduated from the university. “Stony Brook wasn’t just a college our family went to, it’s been our legacy,” said Syed. “Understand that my parents came here with nothing and now, all four of their sons are college graduates. Not just four college graduates, but four Seawolves! This is nothing more than a testament to what Stony Brook stands for.”

As part of the ceremony, the President of the Undergraduate Student Government presented President McInnis with the Senior Class Legacy class gift check for $10,670.

Happily and with much fanfare, the Class of 2022 officially joined the ranks of more than 200,000 Seawolves worldwide. This class contains students from 68 countries and 45 states, and ranges in age from 19 to 71.

Degrees were bestowed in the following categories: 4,670 Bachelor’s Degrees, the largest number of degrees awarded in Stony Brook University’s history 2,095 Master’s Degrees 585 Doctoral and Professional Degrees 260 Certificates President McInnis spoke of the value of a Stony Brook University education, highlighting these students among those who excelled in the class of 2022: Maya Nairobi Brown, whose journalism senior capstone project examined a crucial economic divide in housing and education within our community.

With a multimedia approach that included writing, video, podcast, and photographs, Maya’s project laid bare the lingering effects of a segregation on Long Island.

Anne Green, who epitomizes what it means to be a global citizen and collaborator with her studies and outreach across the fields of environmental design, policy, and planning in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. Her scholarly work also touches the fields of globalization studies and international relations, along with anthropology.

Stony Brook Conferred More Than 7,600 Degrees To Class Of 2022 More than 7,600 Stony Brook University students joined the ranks of the university’s accomplished alumni at the 2022 Degree Commencement Celebration ceremony. The ceremony took place at LaValle Stadium on Friday, May 20, 2022.

Students from one of the largest graduating classes in the University’s 65-year history were awarded a combined 7,610 degrees and certificate completions.

All candidates, with their families and friends, were invited to participate in-person or watch via livestream.

“With the Class of 2022, it is very clear to me that your technique is to maintain a truly creative and collaborative spirit,” said Maurie McInnis, President, Stony Brook University. “I know you will move together, and as individuals, with a sense of discovery, ambition, innovation… and artistry.

Stony Brook University is incredibly proud of all you have achieved here, and all you will go on to create.”

Award-winning independent film director Todd Haynes was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the 62nd commencement ceremony.

Haynes, whose career in film and television spans four decades, created such projects as Poison, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. His other films include Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far from Heaven, I’m Not There, Carol, Wonderstruck and Dark Waters. His work in television includes the miniseries Mildred Pierce and his most recent project is a documentary on the Velvet Underground which is now streaming on Apple TV. Haynes has collaborated often with Christine Vachon, founder of Stony Brook’s MFA in Film and guest lectured to students in the program.

The Port Jefferson School District’s unified basketball team took on Southampton last week in the first home game of the season.

Once again, teamwork was a priority for the student-athletes who prevailed 38-32 over Southampton, with Ryan Sproul, playing for the first time, scoring 10 points to take the win.

Meet The Reboli Center’s June Artisan: Kyle Blumenthal – Designer of Hand Painted Silk Scarves

Kyle Blumenthal of Stony Brook is a painter as well as an artisan who creates hand painted silk scarves, which will be on display during June at the Reboli Center for Art and History in Stony Brook. In addition, she has several paintings in the Reboli Center’s current “Bloom” exhibit. Kyle is an experienced and New York State licensed Art Education specialist.

She studied Illustration and Advertising at the High School of Art and Design.

She holds a BFA in Painting and Art Education from Pratt Institute, and a MA and MFA in Painting from Long Island University. She has served as part of the Art/Art History faculty at Empire State College and was recognized for her artistic achievements in 2010, when New York Foundation for the Arts named her a Mark Fellow.

Currently, Kyle teaches painting at the National Art League and leads a portfolio program (which she created) at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor, New York. Her work has been written about in Arts Magazine, Newsday, The New York Times and Art News.

Kyle simultaneously works in many disciplines. Primarily painting with oil on canvas she has also worked as a Designer of Theatrical Installations for dance. She incorporates the ethereal superimposed upon the material as a concept she strives to convey in her work. Kyle cultivates a large flower garden at her home, which supplies inspiration and resource for her creative works.

Kyle has exhibited her work at such venues as the Harkness House Gallery, Museum of American Illustration, and the Kean Mason Gallery in Manhattan, The Long Island Museum, Islip Art Museum, Guild Hall and Staller Center on Long Island, and Sodarco Gallery in Montreal.

As an artist living in Stony Brook for many years, I feel this brings that sense of community which is important to me. I remember Joseph Reboli picking up frames from the Setauket frame shop as I was also there at the same time getting tips on how to make my own frames. I remember that his were custom ordered and it was the latest framing for oil paintings. Once again it is the kindness extended to artists and the community that carries on.”

Lois Reboli, a founder and president of the Reboli Center said, “Kyle’s work is exquisite, and her scarves are just beautiful. Her silk scarves are very popular in our design shop so we are very happy to have her as our June Artisan.”

The Reboli center is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook and is open TuesdaySaturday from 11am to 5 pm and on Sunday 1pm to 5 pm.
