Cupcake Wars Port Jefferson Middle School students recently competed in a cooking competition designed to emulate the Food Network’s series “Cupcake Wars” as part of the school’s two-year-old cooking club.

During the competition,

student audience members cheered on four students as they rivaled each other in a timed cupcake decorating event.

The competition aimed to provide an opportunity for the students to practice a variety of skills, including

how to deal with highpressure situations.

The in-school cooking club is funded through a Royal Educational Foundation grant and pairs cooking with social skills training.

This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle…

This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show.

And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought.

Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake.

Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them!

Easier said than done.

I saw them coming, all right.

The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame.

There’s always tomorrow, I thought.

The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach.

Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation.

And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation.

I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either!

I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic.

This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally!

As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.”

But she was smiling.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has announced Shannon Christ and Marianna Spentzos as the Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Christ and Spentzos have earned the top spots in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academics.

Valedictorian Shannon Christ has earned a number of academic accomplishments throughout her high

school career. She is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and is a member of the Science Olympiad team, Interact Club, Tri-M Music Society and National Honor Society. Additionally, she is a scholar-athlete, who participates in crosscountry, winter and spring track. Outside of school, she is a dancer, taking classes in ballet, tap, jazz and point. Christ will attend Fairfield University in the fall to study math and secondary education.

Salutatorian Marianna Spentzos has also received a number of academic accomplishments.

She is an AP Scholar with Distinction as well as a member of the Tri-M Music Society and Interact Club.

As a member of the varsity track team and captain of the volleyball team, she is a decorated scholar- and All-League athlete. In the fall, she will attend the University of Miami with a double major in biology and marine science.

National Writing Winners In recognition of their outstanding writing skills, six Three Village Central School District secondary students have been selected as winners in the 2016 National Council of Teachers of English writing contests.

Ward Melville High School juniors Kirti Nath and Michal Zadok were honored in the NCTE’s Achievement Awards in Writing Program while P.J.

Gelinas Junior High School eighth-graders Sydney Korsen, Natalia Newton and Anushka Rajagopalan, as well as R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighth-grader Karen Xie, earned recognition in the Promising Young Writers Program.

For the contests, each student submitted two pieces of writing, which were evaluated by national judges on content,

purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development and style.

Each winner received a certificate of recognition.

Nationwide, 264 high school juniors were selected from a pool of 533 nominees for recognition for outstanding writing and 122 eighth-graders were selected to be honored from a pool of 159 candidates.

Past and Present Eastern Suffolk BOCES Database Manager Bob Cuce survived two tours in Vietnam.

Cuce was drafted in 1969, went through basic infantry training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, received advanced training in field artillery at Fort Sill, and then was shipped over to Vietnam.

His military occupational training changed from field artillery to antiaircraft artillery. Penning Winning Poems Five Three Village Central School District junior high school students have been named winners in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association’s 13th annual Student Poetry Contest, “A Child Went Forth.”

This year’s honorees included P.J. Gelinas Junior High School

eighth-grader Abdullah Nauman, ninth-grader Elizabeth Concepcion and R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninth-graders Kelsey Ge, Ari Nezaria and Varsha Talanki.

There were more than 3,000 entries to the contest this year. These students will receive their awards

year with supplemental donations from Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Academy students from the Bixhorn Technical Center, $5,410.75 will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation in Tennessee at the 34th annual NDQSA Reunion.

“My organization is comprised of air defense artillery soldiers that served in Vietnam and we have a Good Works Committee,” said Cuce. Each year, Cuce and members of NDQSA raise donations to give to the Fisher House Foundation because 94% of the donations go directly to help veterans past and present.

This year, Cuce was surprised when he received a phone call from Art, Design, and Visual Communications Teacher Talia Cliffe. She asked him to come by her classroom because her students had done some fundraising for his organization and she wanted to present him with the proceeds.

Cliffe said, “It was our privilege to help Bob Cuce, NDQSA, and veterans because we owe them so much. NDQSA goes out of their way every year, at their reunions, to help other soldiers. We wanted to help those efforts.”

For several weeks, students raised awareness on R.E.D. Friday which stands for Remember Everyone Deployed.

R.E.D. Friday is a grass roots organization created by relatives and children of veterans. Cuce said, “People wear red on Fridays to represent the blood that was split by veterans both past and present.”

Students from the Computer Repair Program, Art, Design, and Visual Communications Program, and Skills USA wore red on Friday for several weeks to raise awareness and raised $410.75 by selling muffins.

Cuce was moved by the donation and grateful for the efforts of the students.

In honor of her efforts to create a proactive district policy regarding transgender youth, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Emma Martin earned a $100,000 scholarship from the law firm of Goldstein and

Bashner. The award was presented as part of the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying’s first annual Anti-Bullying essay scholarship contest.

Martin, who worked on the policy as a president of her school’s Gay

Straight Alliance, was thrilled to have earned the scholarship in response to her work to help make a difference in her school.

Martin will be attending Adelphi University in the fall to study social work.

How to Prevent Injury When The Benefits of Including Yoga in Your Exercise Routine Exercising Exercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 perform at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week.

Recognize your limitations.

Once you have established a regular exercise routine and your body has grown accustomed to daily exercise, it can be tempting to overdo it or even unknowingly push your body to points that put you at a greater risk of injury. But recognizing your limitations is an essential part of avoiding injury. As you exercise more, you may notice certain areas of your body respond better to exercise than others.

For example, if your wrists ache after strength training sessions, reduce the amount of weight you are lifting

Warm up before each session.

No matter how accustomed your body is to regular exercise, warming up before each workout is still necessary to avoid injury.

Warming up before each workout elevates your heart rate and increases circulation, loosening the joints and increasing blood flow to the muscles you’re about to exercise. Between five and 10 minutes of low-intensity cardiovascular exercise can help loosen up your body and prepare it for the more grueling workout to come.

Switch your routines every so often. When exercise becomes a part of your daily routine, you may end up hitting a plateau. When that happens, your workouts may feel less effective. Switching up routines every so often can combat that problem while also reducing injury risk to overtaxed muscles forced to endure the same exercises day in and day out.

Diversify your workout every so often by choosing new exercises and switching up the cardiovascular portion of your workout.

Give your body time to rest and recover. Exercise feels good, both physically and mentally. Daily exercise can help adults lose weight, and shedding those extra pounds can improve mobility and help adults live more active and fulfilling lives.

Exercise also causes the release of hormones known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body.

Those positive feelings can be somewhat addictive, but it’s important that adults give their bodies time to rest and recover between workouts. Lack of time to rest and recover makes bodies vulnerable to injury, so include time to recover in your weekly exercise regimen.

Daily exercise can help adults live long, healthy and fulfilling lives. But it’s important that men and women of all ages take steps to reduce their risk of exercise-related injury.

University of California, Los Angeles, found that a particular type of yoga that included brief, daily meditation reduced the stress levels of caregivers tasked with caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Yoga continues to grow in popularity. In a questionnaire administered every five years as part of the National Health Interview Survey, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the National Center of Health Statistics found that the number of people practicing yoga increased dramatically between 2002 and 2012, when approximately 21 million adults acknowledged practicing yoga. That figure equated to nearly double the number of people who practiced yoga just 10 years earlier.

The almost meteoric rise in popularity of yoga can likely be traced to many factors, including a growing awareness among the general public regarding the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on both short- and longterm health. An essential component of a healthy lifestyle involves taking steps to protect our bodies, and that can include making an effort to reduce the aches and pains that are often associated with aging.

“The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome,” explained Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor.

The American Osteopathic Association notes the benefits of yoga extend even further than relieving chronic pain. According to the AOA, yoga can help men, women and even children increase their flexibility as well as help them build stronger, more toned muscles.

Additional benefits of yoga include weight reduction, improved cardiovascular and circulatory health and improved energy and vitality.

But the benefits of yoga extend beyond the physical to the mental. The American Psychological Association notes that several studies have shown that yoga can help strengthen social attachments, reduce stress and relieve anxiety, depression and insomnia.
