Embracing Differences Port Jefferson Middle School students learned to embrace and celebrate their individual differences during an assemblyfeaturing speaker Dylan Brady on May 19th.

During the assembly, Brady performed original music and explained that while he has Tourette syndrome, he is an accomplished athlete, singer, attends college and teaches acceptance and

tolerance about Tourette syndrome.

Brady’s message resonated with many of the students and they spoke about Brady’s performance after the assembly.

“This presentation gave me a lot of knowledge about Tourette syndrome.

It’s amazing how it doesn’t impact Dylan while he is performing,” said seventhgrader Kate Sommerstad.

“I learned, from Dylan,

that we can all do what we love, no matter what setbacks we may face,” said sixth-grader Amy Whitman.

On May 4th, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, in close partnership with CISCO, hosted a Girls Power Tech Day at Riverhead CSD. CISCO, a worldwide leader in IT and networking, participates in Girls Power Tech Day because they want young women all over the world to be inspired and to pursue a career in information and communications technology. The event attended by students from Riverhead CSD, EastportSouth Manor CSD, and Center Moriches UFSD was

co-sponsored by the Suffolk Regional Information Center, Million Women Mentors, and Girls in ICT. The overarching theme was – Think like a GIRL – Be a Game Changer, Innovator, Rule Breaker, Leader.

The day’s agenda included a variety of hands-on, interactive activities to allow students from the three districts to mingle and learn about each other. The first activity was a round table ice breaker, Getting to Know You BINGO. The

TRACK STAR - Miller Place High School student Amanda Stead recently competed in the New York State Championship Track and Field Meet held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Amanda placed 4th in the 300 meter dash among all public schools and placed 5th in the federation division, which includes all public, private and parochial schools in New York State. The Miller Place School District provides a robust athletics curriculum for student-athletes, and a comprehensive education on the importance of maintaining a healthy mind and body.

The room was filled with people with extraordinary backgrounds and interests.

The students got BINGO very quickly!

Before the final panel discussion, students broke off into groups to participate in a Snap Circuit activity allowing them to build different types of circuits using electronic fundamentals.

One group was very innovative. They changed the X, Y connections to U, T so the device would play Happy Birthday!

After a presentation titled Personal branding is not just for celebrities – Be Your Authentic Self, the students had a chance to have fun at the photo booth holding up signs that read ‘I speak code’, ‘I Love STEM’, and ‘Future CEO.’ This global event allowed the girls to network with females mentors in technology and inspired them to consider educational and career paths in STEM.

A Mural of Positivity In an effort to leave a lasting legacy at the school, this year’s Arrowhead Elementary School sixth-grade class worked with art teacher Rachael Inversa to paint a colorful mural on the wall outside the building’s cafeteria.

The mural depicts two things very near and dear to

the school’s student body – the new Arrowhead Panda “C.A.R.E.S.” Bear mascot and the building’s outdoor buddy bench. The mascot is a visual reminder for the students of the building’s character education/PBIS program, which promotes the ideas of compassion, acceptance, respectfulness, encouraging and sharing.

National Honor for Writer R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighthgrader Kaitlyn Tung has won the highest award in the 2017 NCTE Promising Young Writers Program, a Certificate of Recognition. Only 67

Then they were asked to write about why they chose this text and why/how it was innovative, inspiring or provocative in important ways.

Kaitlyn chose to read “Animal Farm” because it is a book that “shows its readers what happens to those who cannot think beyond what they are told.”

Kaitlyn added, “One of the reasons I decided to choose “Animal Farm” as my book was because it discusses the theme of warped ideals and how rhetoric can be used as an instrument of control,” she said.

Designer Wins First Place Rocky Point High School senior Bridgette Meruelo was named the first -place winner in the Fashion Design category at this spring’s statewide Skills USA competition.

For the event, Bridgette was required to design

and create three clothing items based on the theme of recycled material. For the project, Bridgette had to hand make patterns and turn those patterns into sample garments. She used unconventional materials – including plastic vinyl,

Graphic Designers Ward Melville High School students enrolled in the building’s Introduction to Graphic Design classes have gained real world experience this year as they worked to create logo designs for a professional client – The North Shore Montessori School.

As part of the assignment, the students not only used their design skills to create

artistic logos – they focused on developing problemsolving skills, cognitive development of an idea, understanding of color, time management skills, understanding the printing process on promotional items including the client’s possible budget. They learned how to verbally articulate what was on their visual presentation

and incorporated public speaking skills taught by their teacher, Cortney Weisman.

For 18 years, the schools’ graphics program has brought the real world in and focused on careers in the communications industry, specifically graphic design.

As part of their social studies lessons, Nassakeag Elementary School sixthgrade students learned about one of the world’s darkest time periods when Holocaust survivor and author Ruth Minsky Sender spoke to the students about her remarkable story of courage and survival.

described how the dreams she had for her future came to a halt following the German invasion of Poland, where she was born. The heart-wrenching stories she shared – from the loss of her family to the day her oldest friend became a Nazi soldier – painted a clear picture of this devastating part of the

history that the students had been studying in class. Additionally, she reflected on many of the stories documented in her memoirs, one of which many of the students had read.

Minnesauke Elementary School first-grade students learned about the life cycle of animals this spring as they observed baby chicks – from their start in an egg to their eventual hatching 21 days later.

The students helped to keep the eggs warm in incubators, charted the embryos progress

by candling the eggs and learned about the various stages the animals go through in their development. The project tied together the science and English Language Arts skills, as they regularly reflected upon the experience in journal form and kept track of the eggs in a chick embryology

folder.

Additionally, the classes compared the chicks’ lifecycles to others, including ladybugs that the students studied in kindergarten.

Once the designs were finalized using the computer CAD software they were brought to life using the school’s 3-D printer. Students then ran a test to see which printed device was able to keep the most of an ice cube’s mass in solid form after putting under a light source for 20 minutes.

Two project designs per class were chosen to complete in a final grade

level challenge. The ice cube enclosed in the device that won the overall competition was found to have only lost 0.66 percent of its mass.

In addition to the handson component to the lesson, the students also met with a Minnesauke parent – Mr. Cutting – who works directly in the field. During the in-class presentations, Mr. Cutting spoke about the company he works for – Sartorius – and the insulated devices they create and use daily.

National Honor Society Induction As a result of their scholastic commitments and leadership skills, 68 Rocky Point High School students were recently inducted into the Rocky Point Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Senior Earns Scholarship Rocky Point High School senior Brittany Reh has won one of four National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s Scholarships provided to Suffolk County athletes.

On May 24th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner visited the Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School in Rocky Point to help students prepare and mail out “Lunchbags of Love” to members of the military who are serving overseas.

The first grade students in Mrs. Stacy Iberger’s class made boxes containing personal hygiene items, candy, pens, paper, note cards, word puzzle books and decks of cards which were all donated by the students. Decorated bags and letters written by

the students were also included to those who will receive the boxes.

During her visit, the Councilwoman presented certificates of appreciation to Mrs. Iberger and the students who donated the items and filled the postal boxes.

Ward Melville High School fencing coach Jeff Salmon has been selected as the inaugural winner of the USA Fencing National High School Coach of the Year Award for 2017.

Eighteen individuals from high schools located in nine different states

were nominated for this prestigious award and a pool of five finalists were selected and evaluated by a special committee.

Under coach Salmon’s leadership, Ward Melville’s teams have continued a winning tradition, including capturing

the 2016-2017 Long Island Championship.

Additionally, over the past 15 years, the program has maintained an unparalleled winning streak that ranks among the most impressive in interscholastic athletics nationwide.

Brittany is a five year varsity cheerleader named captain for the last two years and been recognized twice by Newsday with All-Long Island honors.

During those five years, her team has won two county championships and a UCA national championship title.

Brittany has a 97 average and scored a 29 on the ACT. She is a member of the National Honor Society, a math tutor, a volunteer for the Suffolk County Cheering for Charity group and she also helps out with various Rocky Point Kiddie Cheer Clinics, and recently received the Officials Scholarship Award.

Brittany will be attending and cheering at Adelphi University this fall majoring in elementary education.

Experiencing Real World Research Rocky Point High School science research students recently took part in an exploration lab at Brookhaven National Lab thanks to a field trip grant provided by Target and secured by teacher Nancy Hunter.

During the visit, the students learned about some of the history of the lab, heard about some of the work being done at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and they were told about some of the summer research opportunities for students. Additionally, they were able to model a

BNL developed nontoxic technique for removal of toxic metals from soil.

In preparation for the experiment, they learned how spectrophotometers work, and some of the issues around heavy metal contamination in soil. They examined iron content in soils used to illustrate how metals might be removed from a soil sample. The technique used citric acid, a nontoxic substance, to chemically bind with the metal, and the combination can then be washed out of the soil and recovered.

Students used soil samples that had

previously been collected from behind the high school, and learned how to calculate the amount of iron in the samples. They first prepared samples with known amounts of iron and produced a standard curve using a spectrophotometer.

The spectrophotometer shines light of a given wavelength through samples and reads both the amount of light absorbed and/ or transmitted, allowing the concentration of a substance to be quantified.

They could then quantify the amount of iron in soil samples before and after removing the iron.

Ward Melville High School’s jazz band, string orchestra and symphony orchestra recently took part in and captured top honors during the Festivals of Music in the

Parks competition in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

All three groups scored superior ratings, Jason Rahner won best overall soloist for jazz, the symphony orchestra won

Miller Place School District students at North Country Road Middle School recently competed at the Team Packard Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Challenge at Northport High School as part of a Miller Place School District program to help students develop a love of STEM subjects.

The students participated in 4 different STEM challenge activities. The activities included: ‘Unlock the Box,’ which challenged the team’s problem solving

skills as well as their understanding of math concepts; ‘Say Geronimo!,’ an engineering task where students designed, constructed and tested a parachute using only the materials provided; ‘Float your Boat,’ which required team members to demonstrate their mastery of the relationship between an object’s mass and volume (density); and ‘Lights, Mirrors Action!,’ which challenged the team’s ability to direct a laser beam through a series of mind challenging logic puzzles.

During the event students raised money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Through their efforts and participation the students helped the event raise more than 21,000 dollars for The Robert Packard Center at Johns Hopkins, a non-profit organization that raises money and awareness for ALS.

Lessons in Government P.J. Gelinas Junior High School students recently learned about the interworking of the capitol when Sen. John J. Flanagan, temporary president and majority leader of the New York State Senate, conducted

an informative town hall assembly.

During the event, the senator spoke about the difference in state and federal government, how he came to serve and the different types of laws that affect today’s youth,

including bike helmet laws. Additionally, students asked questions on current and past issues facing the nation, including education, internet safety and health care.

Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) is celebrating 25 years of coordinating corporate volunteerism initiatives with a week-long, islandwide volunteer drive from June 3rd-11th, 2017. Since 1993, corporate volunteers matched to one-day projects through LIVE have completed over 250,000 community service hours for nonprofit agencies

benefitting Long Islanders in need. Companies with ongoing LIVE volunteer teams include Deloitte, PwC, IBM, Kravet, Peoples Alli-ance Federal Credit Union and UL. “LIVE started during a time when corporate volunteerism was very rare,” said Rosemary Mascali, 2017 LIVE Planning Committee CoChair and manager at

Transit Solutions. “With the assistance of our partners, United Way of Long Island and the Long Island Volunteer Center, I’m happy that LIVE has played its part in increasing corporate volunteerism on Long Island,” she added.

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself.

I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer.

My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season.

As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal.

Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime.

Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings.

The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole.

Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard.

As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Gibson, a 1966 graduate of Suffolk, presented the college, pictured, with artifacts from his voyages aboard the space shuttle including a Suffolk pennant he carried into space.
