Taking Steps for a Cure colitis are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18.

As part of a lab in Jonathan Maletta’s Living Environment Regents class, Earl L. Vandermeulen ninth- and tenth-graders performed an investigation centered on DNA replication.

As part of the hands-on

lesson, the students used DNA models to synthesize a sequence of DNA called a gene.

“Students learned that humans possess a multitude of genes that code for the production of proteins (polypeptides),

including enzymes and hormones,” said Maletta.

This particular lesson enabled the students to fully grasp the concept of gene sequencing and molecular biology.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs.

Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know firsthand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community.

LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidence-based programs for teens.

In addition to providing teen-focused interventions, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicted in the first place.

Our program Too Good for Drugs seeks to bolster children and young adults’ self-esteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling

These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief

interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and

Best Buddies is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The challenging course took participants across Scraggy Hill Road, down rolling hills, through a wooded trail and across the finish line, where they were met with cheers from spectators, teachers and administrators.

Scraggy Walk The annual race aims to promote physical fitness and culminates a severalweek training period where students walked, ran and swam in their physical education classes to get ready for the big run.

On April 30th, the Town of Brookhaven’s Recycling Coordinator Aide, Nicole Pocchiare, joined the Mount Sinai Harbor Advisory Committee and local volunteers from the community to participate in the “William Waltz Annual Cedar Beach Clean Up” in Mount Sinai.

During the event, Ms. Pocchiare presented a tabletop demonstration including material about Single Stream Recycling, the Great Brookhaven Clean-Up, Councilwoman Jane Bonner’s Go Green Event, and other Special Collection Events in Brookhaven this year.

She also gave out cloth totes to encourage people to rely less on plastic bags and to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and provided information about composting, natural gardening, and sustainable living.

Masters in Math W.S. Mount Elementary School’s math club defended their awardwinning reputation this May by shining brightly at the ninth annual Suffolk County Elementary Math Tournament held at Stony Brook University.

During the event, 66 teams comprised of 330 students in fourththrough sixth-grades

competed. Awards were given to the top three teams and individual awards were given to the top 10 competitors. As a result of their determination, the Mount Math Masters’ two teams were awarded first and second place in the competition. In addition, Mount students were also awarded seven of the 10 available trophies for

individual excellence.

The district congratulates the following students and their coach Linda Earls on this remarkable achievement: Neal Carpino, Matthew Chen, Ivan Ge, Alexander Lin, Carolyn Lin, Ashwinaa Vaithianathan, Jacqueline Wu, Claire Yang, William Zhang and Ari Zucker.

Robotics Team Honored

During its regular meeting on May 10th, the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education recognized the Earl L. Vandermeulen Robotics Team for designing and constructing a complex robot over a six-week

period.

During the recognition ceremony, team members provided a demonstration of their robot, which was engineered to scale a wall and maneuver over obstacles in a competition setting.

The team most recently participated in the 17th annual Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition alongside more than 2,000 students from 50 high schools. The event was held at Hofstra University.

Camp Prep Underway Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Interact Club and Port Jefferson Middle School National Junior Honor Society teamed up

to help prepare Camp PaQua-Tuck for the summer.

The volunteers came together on May 15th to clean cabin screens, rake leaves, mulch and set

up picnic benches at the Center Moriches camp, which provides special needs children and young adults with camping experiences.

“Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon.

As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care.

At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the “amazing” breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete college.

Completing the two years of HOPE inspired three students to stay and attend Stony Brook University in the fall to continue to strive towards achieving their goals.

One of those students, Michelle Najera, of Longwood High School, has an interest in dentistry.

She credits the program with connecting her with a member of the dental school faculty and assisting her in the admissions process for college.

“I made some really good connections through the program as well,” she said.

“I got to meet Dr. Carrion and he wrote me a letter of recommendation which I believe helped me a tremendous amount when applying to college.”

Katterin De La Cruz from Brentwood High School plans to become an emergency medicine physician or a surgeon.

She says that she loves the “rush of the emergency room” and “the idea that every case that walks through the door has its own unique story amazes me and that one day I would be the one putting people back together is just very cool.”

Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include: Allegheny College, Cornell University, Farmingdale State College, Monroe College, St. Joseph’s College, SUNY New Paltz, Suffolk County Community College, and West Virginia University.

Thirteen high school seniors who completed Stony Brook University Hospital’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program celebrated their “graduation” from the program and are on their way to college. A ceremony took place at the hospital on May 10th to honor their accomplishments.

Under the mentorship of Stony Brook faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students from the Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch school districts and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for hundreds of promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities.

Special Information Session Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA), which is comprised of commissioners from 21 water districts across Long Island, recently held a special information session led by guest speakers Joseph C. Ferreira and Thomas J. Ruggiero, Partners at Hauppaugebased Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Company, P.C. (AVZ) Certified Public Accountants, addressed

the Commissioners on the topic of “NYS Comptroller Audits.”

Hosted by Albertson Water District Commissioners Howard Abbondondelo, Richard Ockovic and Kenneth Vey, the session’s focus was on the constitutional and statutory objectives of auditing. “The difference between independent audits and comptroller audits includes scope and materiality,” stated Mr. Ferreira. “Being

thoroughly prepared includes operational and control considerations, especially internal operations, as well as compliance with New York State general municipal law and their own internal policies and procedures.”

Mr. Ruggiero added, “There is a distinct need to have policies for traditional topics such as purchasing, investments, and fixed assets. In today’s world, IT, disaster

recovery and business continuity must also have policies in place.”

NSWCA President Raymond Averna of Massapequa Water District commented, ““The subsequent hands on Q&A session brought deeper discussion of several interrelated topics, including the Top 10 internal controls, and delved into important governance issues that concern all member water district commissioners.

Mr. Ferreira and Mr. Ruggiero graciously enlightened us with their expertise and insights.”

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling.

They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars.

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas.

• Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars.

• Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches.

Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom.

Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Celebrating 30 Years Adults and Children with Learning and D e v e l o p m e n t a l Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based not-for-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Children’s Services Program.

“We’ve come a long way from the days of supporting 15 infants at their homes and 42 pre-school children at the Bay Shore Children’s Center,” said Noreen Clemens, Director of ACLD’s Children’s Services and an original member of the Children’s Services team. “But we know now as we knew then that it’s critically important to make sure children with developmental disabilities get off to a good start in their educational lives.”

Services moved into the Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore in 1990; today, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore – which was added to the program’s offerings in 2014 – is the home of ACLD’s learning and recreation programs for children with autism, learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities.

Offerings at the Center include a full-day and half-day preschool classes which serve 65 children with developmental disabilities, a Head Start program which serves ten children, and an after-school program for 37 schoolaged children.

The Center is also home to a summer camp by the Great South Bay YMCA. ACLD enrolls children in the camp with the support of a grant from the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). In addition, the

Kramer Learning Center continues to operate, providing comprehensive diagnostic, educational and therapeutic services to 160 children with developmental disabilities, along with a Head Start program which serves 20 children.

In all, more than 12,000 children have received support from ACLD Children’s Services since it launched in 1986.

“Before there was an ACLD, parents of children with disabilities had limited program options for their children to receive a quality education,” Clemens said.

“We’re proud to have played a role in changing that reality.”
