Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.
(Cheers to that.)
Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.
Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day
Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.
influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.
• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have
• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.
• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.
Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation Hosts Its 18th Annual Gala “Springtime in Paris” Fundraiser Benefits Making Memories Fund
JEFFERSON’S FERRY FOUNDATION HOSTS ITS 18TH ANNUAL GALA -
The
Annual Gala. Attendees raised funds to support programming at Jefferson’s Ferry’s new Memory Care Wing, set to open later this year. Joining Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield (second from right) at the gala are, left to right: Brookhaven Town Councilman Jonathan Kornreich, Dr. Nikhil Palekar, Director Stony Brook University Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease, Brad Straub, Executive Vice President at Greystone, and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine.
The Jefferson’s Ferry’s Foundation’s annual gala this spring marked 18 years of generous support for the Foundation. Jefferson’s Ferry residents and their families, supporters and vendors joined Jefferson’s Ferry management, staff and board members for “Springtime in Paris” to salute the singular lifestyle, vibrant community and peace of mind that are the hallmarks of Jefferson’s Ferry. The proceeds from the evening will benefit the Foundation’s “Making Memories Fund,” which will provide supplemental programming for residents of Jefferson’s Ferry’s new Memory Care Wing to include exercise classes, massage therapy, day trips, entertainment and more. The programs will be geared to participants’ interests and capabilities rather than
their limitations. The Fund will also support continuing education for staff of the Memory Care Wing, which is set to open later this year.
This year Jefferson’s Ferry honored Greystone, which has served as the chief consultant for Jefferson’s Ferry’s ambitious expansion project. To accept the award on behalf of Greystone, Brad Straub, Executive Vice President at Greystone, joined the party from Texas.
“Brad has been an invaluable resource and played a leading role in defining how Jefferson’s Ferry can best develop its physical plant, programs and resources to fulfill the current and future needs and desires of our residents,” said Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield. “Brad’s expertise and oversight
has enabled us to conceptualize and execute a significant expansion and renovation within a reasonable time frame and with the least disruption to our community.”
This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Nikhil Palekar, Director of the Stony Brook University Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Palekar, an expert in the treatment and research of cognitive and mood disorders in older adults, spoke of promising medical advances in the study of cognitive impairment and mood disorders. He has been a co-investigator on several NIMH-funded clinical studies in adult and geriatric psychiatry and, in 2016, was the recipient of the Planetree – Physician of the Year Award for excellence in patient-centered care.

Hundreds Head To Smith Haven Mall To Learn How To Have A Sun-Safe Summer With Stony Brook Medicine
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with 1 in 5 people being diagnosed with it in their lifetime. May is designated
as National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month and with summer right around the corner, it’s important to know how to keep your family sun-safe during outdoor activities. This past Saturday, May
13, families across Long Island attended Block the Sun, Not the Fun hosted by Stony Brook Cancer Center at Smith Haven Mall. The interactive, fun, and educational event featured family fun opportunities
presented by Healthcare and Community Partners and Stony Brook’s Wolfie mascot aimed at promoting sun safety and teaching the community about preventing skin cancer. Before the mall
event, Stony Brook Cancer Center and Stony Brook Dermatology Associates hosted free skin cancer screenings for nearly hundred individuals and Dr. Tara Huston, Director of the Melanoma Disease
Management Team at Stony Brook Medicine, led an educational program for patients about melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member
Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.
Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.
That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-
based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.
Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.
Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of
seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.
Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.
“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”
When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s
side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in. In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.

Port Jefferson School District’s Partnership With Local Lions Club
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club members learned about some of the many wonderful opportunities available through the partnership with the Port Jefferson Lions Club.
The presentation was facilitated by school librarian Eva Grasso and technology
teacher Brian Chalmers who are co-advisers to the Leo Club. The students welcomed the Lions Club’s liaison, Lori Anne De Iulio Casdia.
She shared the background of the local, national and international affiliate of the high school’s Leo Club, which offers student
members many unique opportunities. Beyond engaging in community service, the Lions Club also bridges the school to local business and industry leaders, helping to pay it forward and model the ethos of gratitude that the Lions Club espouses.

philosophy and develop ways to make things nicer in Rocky Point.
Nine students – Valentina Bruno, Allison Gunning, Tyler Hinderliter, Meghan Liselli, Kevin Melillo, Samantha Mercurio,
Karen Otero, Jules Vieira and Reilly Weil and adviser Carly Tribby visited Rocky Point’s Robert Miner Park, also known as “Rocket Ship Park” to clean it up.

Senator Mattera And Long Island Cares Join Together To Help Protect Pets
New York State Senator
Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need are
able to care for their pets.
Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.
From now until Wednesday, May 31st,
Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others. To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed pet items are:
Port Jefferson Named To National Best Community For Music Education List
The Port Jefferson School District has again been ranked among the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education in America. The honor acknowledges schools and districts across the country for their dedication to and support for music education as part of the core curriculum.
This is the 17th consecutive year that Port Jefferson has received the prestigious national recognition.
The school district boasts numerous vocal, band and orchestral performing groups, and students have numerous opportunities to perform within the community. The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by
teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a wellrounded education in Port Jefferson. The district was designated for its demonstration of an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
• 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food
• Canned food for dogs and cats
• Dog and cat treats
• Collars and leashes
• Food For all animals including birds, fish, ferrets and hamsters
• Fish food
• Cat litter
• Small new toys
According to the organization, all donated pet food must be unopened and in its original
packaging. For health reasons, the organization will not accept opened bags, ripped bags or loose pet food.
“Anyone who has a family pet knows that they are not just animals; they are a part of the family. When a family falls on hard times, as many in our community have in the past couple of years, it is difficult for them to provide for everyone –including pets. I thank
Long Island Cares for their efforts and am glad to support their efforts to help ensure that pets can stay in their homes, with their families, where they belong,” said Senator Mattera.
For additional information on Long Island Cares or Baxter’s Pet Pantry, please visit Senator Mattera’s website at mattera.nysenate.gov.
