Stewardship Program The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council have announced their partnering with Trinity Solar, a leader in solar installations and services on Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn, through its Stewardship Program which will raise funds for underserved youths to participate in scouting programs as part of the Scoutreach Program over the next 12 months.

Trinity Solar will donate $100 to the Suffolk County Council for every qualified appointment that is scheduled through this program.

When a homeowner decides to have a solar energy system installed, Trinity Solar will donate $1,000 to the Suffolk County Council Scoutreach Program.

“Trinity Solar a dedicated family-owned and operated company focused on giving back to the communities in which we do business.

We feel this is essential for our success. Trinity Solar’s Stewardship Program will raise funds for important scouting initiatives and at the same time assist Long Island residents go green and save money on their energy bills,” said Michael Passentino, Vice President of Business Development at Trinity Solar.

Solar energy provides home owners across Long Island with the ability to save significantly on the cost of their electricity and to aid the environment by reducing the use and dependence on fossil fuels. Installing a solar system is an important decision as well as a smart investment.

The Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts Stewardship Program will provide funding for 50 youths currently enrolled in the Scoutreach Program in three local communities.

The funds will provide

uniforms, program materials, leadership, camping and outdoor experiences along with a leadership development program that will impact their lives for years to come. The funding will also enable the Council to expand the program to reach more young people who would benefit by being part of scouting. The Suffolk County BSA has already raised over $3,000 through the program.

In addition, Trinity Solar will be working with Suffolk County BSA scouts, helping them earn both their Sustainability and Energy badges over the next twelve months.

“This innovative partnership with Trinity Solar allows us to expand our Scoutreach Program and will help raise awareness of scouting among underserved youths on Long Island.

Kat’s Ribbon of Hope presented a grant of $100,000 to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program for their bilingual patient navigation program for underserved breast cancer patients. The grant will be used to support patients at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) and local hospitals through their diagnosis and treatment.

The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s social workers address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients.

Additionally, the program facilitates a Spanish language support group, Cafecito, in the community for breast cancer patients.

“Our partnership with

the Adelphi program supports our goal to provide financial assistance to women who would otherwise not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer,” says Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the cofounder of KROH. Kat, who was diagnosed when she was 32, says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed in many ways with the support of her family and excellent medical care.

She realized that there were many women who did not have such support and was determined to do what she could to help. She and her husband George Raptis and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013.

“The staff of Adelphi is

a big part of what we do,” says Despina. “Through their work they define what Kats Ribbon of Hope is all about.” Last year, KROH gave the Adelphi program a grant which allowed them to hire an additional patient navigator. “The generosity of Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is greatly increasing our ability to help underserved women,” says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support, education and advocacy for breast cancer patients and the community. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077.

Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing.

Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself.

I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer.

My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season.

As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime.

Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings.

The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard.

As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever.

We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily.

In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment.

By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise.

If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you?

Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive?

Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed.

Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day.

Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day!

Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate.

Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you!

May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going.

The results you obtain will be well worth the effort.

Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

May’s Charity of the Month is: A team of Investors Bank employees recently volunteered their time to turnover garden beds, weed and plant at the Options for Community Living Greenhouse and gardens located in Medford, New York. Options – a Long Island not-for-profit serving people with chronic physical and mental illnesses – operates a Greenhouse where residents grow flowers and vegetables as well as plants that are sold at seasonal fundraising events and at the Options Thrift Store, located at 392 Hawkins Avenue, Ronkonkoma, New York.

The Investors Bank employees helped weed and prepare the soil for planting, installed screening to help protect the garden from the deer and rabbit populations and planted vegetables and flowers. “The volunteers

were so wonderful. I am thankful for their help getting us ready for the planting season,” said Options’ Horticulturist Jason Mullen.

“Their impact will go far beyond the work they have done because we will be able to use the revitalized garden beds for many seasons to come.”

“It has been a pleasure to volunteer at the Options Greenhouse,” said Investors Bank Branch Manager Amanda Seppi.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling.

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Summer Portfolio Program No students left behind in 2018! No more wait lists! The Art League of Long Island’s popular Summer Portfolio Development Program for Teens is expanding to accommodate more high school students looking to build their college portfolios. Along with the additional seats, the Art League is bringing in an additional instructor and a host of new opportunities including a schedule of special lectures, lessons, and demonstrations by professionals in the fields of art and design. These practicing professionals will share studio techniques and their

strategies for success!

Program participants will enhance their art portfolios by incorporating the variety of artistic mediums and techniques designed to catch the attention of college admissions officers.

New Summer Portfolio instructor Korey Zalk will co-teach along with current instructor Lucas Sheridan in the program’s 23rd year at the Art League. Korey currently teaches art in the Glen Cove City School District, prior to that she taught at the Success Academy in Springfield Gardens and in the North Babylon School District.

Korey is not completely new to the Art

League. She taught Early Childhood sessions of the Art League’s Summer Art Adventure Program (SAA) and was a teaching assistant at SAA while earning her Bachelor’s Degree. As a high school student Korey attended the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program where she went on to earn scholarships to attend the New York Institute of Technology and Dowling College, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences, with a dual major in Secondary Education and Visual Arts.

Lucas Sheridan has been with the Art League’s Summer Portfolio

Program since 2016. When not teaching the summer program, Lucas teaches at the Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer, a position he has held since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate School he was an Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School.

Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range of schools including: Pratt Institute, Rhode

Island School of Design, The School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, and Yale.

The Summer Portfolio Development Program runs in two three-week sessions from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills. Students Excel at SkillsUSA Three students from Rocky Point High School have been recognized as first-place winners in the Regional VI SkillsUSA competitions recently held at Suffolk County Community College.

Seniors Brianna Davanzo and Emily Wojnowski teamed up with two other top-achieving students from their nurse assistant class at Eastern Suffolk BOCES for the Health Knowledge Bowl. The Jeopardy-like competition posed questions about academic achievements

and safety precautions.

The competition also reinforced both students’ future goals of attending nursing school – Brianna will head to St. Joseph’s College and Emily will attend Adelphi University in the fall.

Mickey Gold, a junior, placed first in the pin design competition for a piece he created that highlighted the event.

His work featured “Skills USA Area VI Long Island ‘18” embossed over an outline of Long Island with the Montauk

On Saturday, April 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended a trail opening and dedication ceremony at the trailhead in Rocky Point.

The trail, which covers over 12 miles and connects Rocky Point and Yaphank, was named in memory of Ray Corwin, a nature and hiking lover who passed away suddenly in 2010.

Ray Corwin served 17 years as the first Executive Director of the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission, and 25 years as Vice President of the Long Island Greenbelt

Trail Conference.

The newly opened Ray Corwin Trial is part of a larger trail that Corwin had hoped to see created, which would connect Shoreham to Smith Point County Beach.

“Ray Corwin was an incredible member of our community who passed away far too early,” said Legislator Anker. “He had a great love for our county’s open spaces and trails, and it was a privilege to attend the opening of this new trail in his honor.”

The trail is a project of the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy

Commission and the Long Island Greenbelt Trail.

The two organizations are also working with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Suffolk County Water Authority, the Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation, and the Town of Brookhaven.

Sharing Skills The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School boys and girls varsity lacrosse teams held a youth clinic for the Port Jefferson boys and girls lacrosse teams to help train athletes in a variety of skillbased drills and specialized training for specific field positions. More than 75 students in grades K-6 attended the weekend event held at Scraggy

Fields alongside their coaches and parents.

“The event was highly rewarding, not just for the athletes involved, but also the varsity athletes who helped run the event,” said Taylor Forstell, head coach for the boys varsity lacrosse team.

Boys varsity lacrosse captains Connor Kaminska, Thomas Mark and Billy Scannell echoed the

same message. Being the first generation of youth lacrosse members in Port Jefferson, they did not have the older kids to look up to for advice. Now as varsity players, the trio find it to be fulfilling to give back to the youth programs and to have a positive impact on the growth of the lacrosse programs in Port Jefferson.

Varsity Club Honored Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club was recognized at a recent Port Jefferson School District Board of Education meeting for its volunteer efforts for the League of Yes, an organization that creates baseball programs for people with disabilities.

Cheri Fox, Suffolk County field director and executive board member for League of Yes, commended the students on their efforts in not only volunteering their

time, but in developing friendships with the players on the league as they were each presented with a certificate. The school also received a “Buddy of the Year” plaque for its commitment to the organization.

The Varsity Club members and their advisers, teachers Jesse Rosen and Deirdre Filippi, engage in projects centered around athletics and also run school-organized events, including volleyball

tournaments and the schoolwide Olympic games; the activities help raise money for various service-minded organizations.

These activities help to establish a sense of community within the high school building and teach club members that they can positively help and influence people around them while challenging themselves in the process.

According to Ms. Ntiri, the students were proud of their finished products.

“They had fun making them and were excited to be able to actually use them in class,” she said.

Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day

S

tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term.

If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday.

Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can

help people combat stress for several hours afterward.

Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work.

The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

Stress is a part of daily life for many people.

But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

According to a 2015 report published in the Daily Mail, many people spend more time on their devices than they do sleeping. A recent Nielsen Company audience report also found that adults in the United States devote about 10 hours and 40 minutes each day to consuming media on their personal computers, tablets, multimedia devices, TVs and more.

Researchers continue to study the effects of screen time on personal health, but there is reason to believe that screen time may be especially harmful to vision.

Devices force the eyes to focus at near range, and over time that can have an adverse effect on vision.

Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difficulty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells.

A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as near-sightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike in time

spent looking at things close-up and a lack of outdoor activities that require focusing elsewhere. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that a separate study recently found that excessive screen time usage in adolescents was associated with development of acute onset esotropia, or crossing of the eyes, and that limiting usage of gadgets decreased the degree of eye crossing in these patients.

Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax. The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn’t too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue.

Antireflective lenses on eyeglasses or filters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare.

Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.

How to reduce damage to eyes resulting from prolonged screen time

Third-grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District experienced an informative lesson on string, brass and woodwind instruments at the school’s recent instrumental recruitment meeting.

From the soft vibrations of a violin to the baritonevoiced euphonium, the students were introduced to the instruments by

the current fourthgraders, who were eager to demonstrate the instrument they each play.

The annual event is a collaborative effort of Dr. Vanessa Salzman, the 4-6 grade orchestra teacher, who organizes the event and band teacher Mark Abbonizio, who runs the meeting with the students.

“Our annual recruitment events are an exciting time to introduce the

incoming fourth-graders to all the instruments we teach at the elementary school,” said Dr. Salzman.

“Listening and watching demonstrations by their peers not only showcases the talents of our current musicians, but is a powerful and effective tool to inspire our newest members of the band and orchestra.”

Opioid Project Raises Funds On Friday, May 4th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Legislator Kara Hahn, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, opioid awareness advocates, school staff, and students for a pledge walk around the Comsewogue High School track to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic on Long Island.

The walk raised $3,000 for Outreach House, an organization that fights against substance abuse

and assists in recovery.

The walk was in honor of former student Garrett Venza.

“Long Island is in the midst of an opioid epidemic that has affected every community in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Every day, drugs like heroin and fentanyl claim another victim. Each and every one of us has the ability to help end this crisis and provide support for those suffering from addiction.”

Best of the Boys

At the May 10th Town Board meeting, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and the Town Board honored Quentin Palifka for raising more than $10,000 over the past two years by shaving his head in support of cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Quentin, an eighth-grade student at Rocky Point Middle School, raised more money than anyone in his school.

Councilwoman Bonner said, “Quentin is an outstanding young man who deserves

to be recognized for his generosity and commitment to help his neighbors. He is certainly making his mark on the community and well on his way to achieving his life goals to become a Marine, lawyer, congressman and president.”

In addition to his efforts on behalf of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Quentin has worked with Ronkonkoma-based Boots on the Ground NY to welcome home veterans at MacArthur Airport as part of the Honor Flight.

He recently received a

Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which is coordinated by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

His other activities include serving in the Student Government and as president of the Community Service Club, and he plays baritone in school ensembles.

His life goals are to become a Marine, lawyer, Congressman and U.S. president.

It’s all about the “best of the boys”– the Beach Boys, the Backstreet Boys and The Four Seasons, to name a few – as the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus (LIGMC) celebrates LGBT pride and its 10th anniversary season with three performances in June.

Featuring more than six decades of hits from legendary male vocal groups, LIGMC’s “Let’s Hear It For The Boys” concerts are scheduled for Friday, June 8th at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, 50 Cathedral Ave., Garden City, and Saturday, June 9th at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook, 380 Nicolls Road (CR 97) in Stony Brook. Showtime for those concerts is 8 p.m.

For the first time, the chorus will also take the stage in Huntington village at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 12 Prospect St., Huntington on Sunday, June 10th. Showtime is 7 p.m.

“Our members have worked diligently to prepare an eclectic selection of music’s greatest hits for the concert stage,” LIGMC board President Bradley Meek said. “This is a very special year for the Long Island Gay Men’s Chorus, and we are delighted to be celebrating LGBT pride and the unifying power of music in three beautiful venues.”

As part of the celebration of LIGMC’s milestone anniversary season, chorus alumni are invited to join

performances of “Seize the Day” - from the musical “Newsies” - and “Lean On Me/We Shall Overcome.”

Residents within the Comsewogue School District approved both the district’s bond and 2018/19 budget. Voters approved the bond: 768 YES to 315 NO votes and the budget 829 YES to 263 NO. “We are grateful to our community for their continued support of our schools and our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Rella.

“Their approval of the bond and 2018/19 budget will enable us to enhance and

enrich health and safety, infrastructure and the three A’s – academics, arts and athletics.”

The $32 million bond will provide all six schools in the district, as well as the administration office, with considerable building improvements, including: replacing outdated casework, bathroom renovations, repairs to building masonry, sidewalks and curbing, and upgrades to HVAC and electrical

In addition, certain instructional spaces such as Art and Family & Consumer Science classrooms are outdated and can no longer accommodate an evolving 21st-century curriculum.

Heading to Nationals P.J. Gelinas Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team is bound for the national competition this May, after capturing first place during this year’s New York State Science Olympiad Competition.

Of the 39 competing regional champions, Gelinas took three first place ribbons, six second place ribbons and four

third place ribbons in the 26 individual events.

“What a wonderful experience it was,” said head coach Chris Marotta.

“The kids worked so well together; not only with their teammates but with the new friends from other teams which they met at the Science Olympiad. They all helped each other in the spirit of

good sportsmanship. It was a beautiful experience, which I am certain that they will carry for their entire lives.”

R.C. Murphy Junior High School also competed in this year’s state contest, and was ranked third; missing second place by only two points.

Honor Flight Long Island

It was an unforgettable scene at Islip MacArthur Airport this past weekend as teenage U.S. Naval Sea Cadets lined up at 6 a.m. in Honor Guard formation to help send off 50 World War II and Korean War veterans on a memorial trip to Washington DC. The Honor Guard carried the American flag that these veterans had fought so hard to defend, as well as flags representing each service branch of the U.S. military with which the veterans had served – the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The veterans hailed from villages and towns all over Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the war stories they shared for this Honor Flightproviding a glimpse into the type of honorable duties performed by the 40,000+ veterans that reside on Long Island.

veterans spent the entire day in Washington DC, visiting sites including the World War II and Korean War Memorials, as well as The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, before returning to Islip long after taps would have played. The complimentary trip was a small tribute to those from Long Island that served our nation in war.

“Your country said that it needed you, and you said, ‘Yes, I will go,’” the 50 veterans were told by Bill Jones, the President of Honor Flight Long Island.

“You had never been out of your hometown, yet you found yourselves in places you’d never heard of. At a time of your lives when you should have been concerned with simple things…your high school prom, maybe applying to college…maybe settling down and starting a family of your own…you,

as ordinary citizens were asked to put on a uniform in service to your country.

I thank you for answering the call to duty and the privilege of escorting you to yourmemorial.”

Jones was joined by 50+ volunteers who served as escorts for each of the veterans. After the morning began with the Naval Sea Cadets’ Honor Guard ceremony (the youths were from the Theodore Roosevelt Division based in East Moriches), the veterans were whisked off on their flight to tour DC sights. Upon return to Islip MacArthur Airport, there was a crowd of more than 200 waiting, and again the Theodore Roosevelt Division Naval Sea Cadets were in formation welcoming the veterans back to Long Island soil, with many a misty eye in the airport.

Honor Flight: Army Air Force mechanic and gunner Stanley Pollack, of Wading River, served aboard B-29 bombers in the Pacific Theater in WWII. “Flying through anti-aircraft was the most harrowing as the enemy shot shells at us in puffs and flak attacks.”

Navy Yeoman Peter Pascale, of Ridge, was on a ship one-half mile out from the invasion of Iwo Jima and was in range of the USS Indianapolis when it sunk following a secret mission that directly contributed to the end of WWII. Marine Corps rifleman Emanuel Poretta remembered a “crazy thing” in Korea. He was taking a shower from a truck with hot water. “A red alert sounded, and I found my rifle, helmet and ammo belt. No clothes!”

Poretta was left to hand out supplies in his birthday suit.

Richard Cardone of Farmingdale was a Navy Damage Controlman during the Korean War. When a terrible accident happened aboard ship, he saved the lives of two trapped men, carrying the unconscious men to safety.

“All my training in the Navy really prepared me for it.”

Edwin Cartoski, of Greenport, served as a WWII Marine Corps pilot.

When Admiral Halsey

lost three destroyers and 100 aircraft to a typhoon, Cartoski flew Corsairs and Hell Cats from dawn to dusk straight off factory lines to California so they could be shipped to the war zone.

Sgt. Tess Pierce Garber, from Jericho, was a WWII teletype operator in the Marine Signal Corps.

Among the secret daily reports she saw from the battlefield was one with terrible news – it carried the name of the only son of her Mom’s friend; he’d been killed in action.

Gennaro Iorio, from Bellmore, was an MD in the US Army Medical Corps in WWII, assigned to hospitals in France and Germany, and he assisted the Chaplain in travels to comfort the injured.

George Israel, of Long Beach, was an executive officer aboard a Navy ship in the Korean War that was caught in a typhoon with 200 mph winds and ship rolls of 53 degrees!

Army veteran Charles Ludrosky, of Wantagh, used a poncho to cover his fox hole as rains poured down upon him on the front lines in the Korean War. He received three Bronze Stars.

Val Marino was a fighter pilot with the Air Force flying daily missions against Russian MIGs in Korea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing an

amazing 125 missions and also awarded a Silver Star!

He later became a research test pilot, and last year was appointed to a Presidential Advisory Board due to his North Korean experiences.

Robert Anziano of Islip Terrace joined the Navy, havingbeen in a junior Navy program akin to the Naval Sea Cadets.As an instrument technician at a Naval Air Station, he saluted Tyrone Power every morning – a swashbuckling film star who was also in uniform.

Coast Guard veteran William O’Brien, of Massapequa Park, boarded foreign vessels in NY waters and was schooled by the Atomic Energy Commission in the use of radioactive detectors.

The Honor Guard of theTheodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps includes cadets ages 13 to 18. The cadets train out of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in East Morichesand hail from all over Suffolk County. The Naval Sea Cadet program focuses on developing cadets’ abilities in seamanship, instilling in cadets the virtues of good citizenship, moral principles and public service, and the program inspires young men and women to reach their fullest potential.

Stop the Bleed The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Herricks, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Plainview, Westbury, Uniondale and Levittown among others.

Knowledge gained through Stop the Bleed is most often associated with treating injuries following mass casualties, gun violence or car crashes, but sports injuries can

also be very serious. By empowering the Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding.

“The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop. “Empowering Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed helps round out their capabilities if faced with serious bleeding, enabling them to provide assistance to save lives and

limbs. This training should be required for Athletic Trainers in every school district on Long Island.”

NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers are part of the Hospital’s Sport Medicine program and the Athletic Trainers’ services include community outreach on acute care of injuries.

“Although most injuries that occur in athletics are relatively minor, lifethreatening injuries are unpredictable and can occur without warning,” added Tony Marra, Athletic Trainer at Locust Valley High School. “Serious injury can occur during any physical activity – and at any level of participation.

The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) was pleased to participate in the Child Care in a Time of Suburban Fiscal Crisis Legislative Summit, which was presented by the Suffolk County Child Care Commission at Suffolk County Community College, Brentwood, New York. CCCS Associate Executive Director Jennifer Rojas presented an update on the “Federal/State Budget and Economic Implications” as well as moderated a Facilitated Conversation focusing on: • What are the next steps for child care?

• What do we want to happen tangible/ actionable items?

• How do we make it happen?

• How can you become involved in a concrete, tangible way?

• What is the cost of our not acting?

Suffolk County Legislator and Suffolk County Child Care Commission Chairperson Monica R. Martinez provided the opening remarks for the Legislative Summit, which featured a keynote address by New York State Assemblywoman Ellen C. Jaffee, 97th Assembly District.

As chair of the Committee on Children and Families, Assemblywoman Jaffee’s priorities include ensuring that every family has access to safe, high-quality, affordable child care, early childhood education, the well-being of children and youth in foster and kinship care and securing funds so that communities have the resources, services and programs they need to support our most

vulnerable.

The Summit was highlighted by distinguished panelists: U.S. Congressman Peter King, New York State Senator Phil Boyle, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy who responded to a series of questions from Legislator Martinez and audience members.

Stop the Bleed is a national program that encourages first responders and everyday citizens to become trained to assist in a bleeding emergency until professional medical aid arrives. The NYU Winthrop Trauma team has been training organizations and residents across Long Island, bringing the program’s lifesaving techniques to firefighters, public safety officers, health professionals, universities, public entertainment venues and, more recently, high school staffs.

Noted Steve Tozer, the Athletic Trainer at Syosset High School, “As a certified Athletic Trainer, I am called upon to assist students who suffer injuries during

athletic competitions.

Stop the Bleed training enables me to now provide immediate assistance to halt serious bleeding until emergency responders arrive. While I hope I never have to utilize the skills learned in Stop the Bleed, the training could one day prove to be the difference between life and death.”

According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize life-threatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing

(filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth.

Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure.

Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions to install Stop the Bleed kits, which include tourniquets, alongside defibrillators in public venues and at schools.

The winning name will be announced at the event.

The person who submitted the winning name will receive two free park admissions and a Wallaby Encounter. Two runners up will also receive a Wallaby Encounter.
