New Study Shows Transcendental Rocky Point Union Free School District Universal Prekindergarten Meditation Effective For Program Reducing Veterans’ Stress or AM/PM seats for halfday students cannot be guaranteed. The Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School will not be a placement option. The deadline is May 21 to submit an application for the UPK lottery.

To register for Universal Prekindergarten in the 2021-2022 school year, children must be four (4) years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2021.

The pre-registration form – at http://www.

NOTE: Students who are eligible to attend kindergarten in fall 2021 may not be registered for the Pre-K lottery.

Also, students must be toilet trained to attend UPK. Three-year-old children are not eligible for the lottery.

Top Rankings For High School Both Nationwide And Statewide Earl L. Vandermeulen High School has been ranked among the top 6% of high schools nationwide and in the top 8% of high schools in New York State as part of the annual U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools list. The designation is based on the 2018-19 school year.

Of all the eligible schools that received the designation, Port Jefferson was ranked 1,046 out of 17,857 public high schools and 101 out of 1,218 in New York State.

The news organization evaluated the high school based on several factors, including the number of students who took at least one AP exam, the number of students who passed at least one AP exam, and student math and reading proficiency rates.

All schools are rated on their performance on state-required tests, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.

“We are pleased to again receive this nationally acclaimed designation

and are grateful to all our stakeholders – teachers, parents and our Port Jefferson community – in encouraging student excellence at all grade levels,” Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan said.

The high school annually boasts numerous AP Scholars and National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Students, in addition to the many athletic, musical, civic and volunteer accomplishments of its students.

Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http://doi. org/10.1002/jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a non-traumafocused, easy-to-learn technique that was found in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are trauma-focused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The

TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5.

The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures.

Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment.

“This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study co-investigator.

“The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous

PTSD intervention.”

The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms.

Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.

Jazz Loft’s New Speakeasy-Inspired Room Dubbed ‘The Coal Bin’ is Both a Salute to Days Gone by & a Look to the Future love for Jazz and respect for the building’s 250 years of history are evident in the extraordinary look of the room which features historic artifacts and furniture once owned by Jazz greats Arthur Prysock and Milt Hinton. A dining table owned by Prysock had once entertained dinner guests that included the Armstrongs, Sarah Vaughan, Muhamad Ali, Red Fox, Sam Cooke, Joe DiMaggio and others.

Original woodwork and carpentry circa 1750 throughout the rooms make the Coal Bin as much a time machine as a music space. The wine cellar and fully stocked bar behind an original stained glass window make you feel that you’ve stumbled into the VIP area of the Jazz Loft.

The woodwork and stained glass creation are all the work of Manuel’s father, Mike Passantino, who owns Mike’s Woodwork & Stained Glass Shop.

The walls of the Coal Bin are done in stone imported from a Connecticut quarry to match the stone front, circa 1750’s, of the Loft’s

exterior.

The historic building, originally called The Stone Jug, once stored jugs of molasses.

In addition to the furnishings, the Coal Bin has an impressive hifi listening system with only the finest of period 1950’s-60’s audiophile equipment, including a McIntosh amplifier and pre-amp, a Gray turntable for 78’s and mono recordings and a Thorens TD124 for stereo recordings. The system is complimented with a pair of Altec Lansing 843A Malibu floor speakers.

“The restoration of the Coal Bin really knocked it out of the park on many levels,” says Manuel. “First, we were able to restore one of the oldest buildings in Stony Brook Village and not only maintain its historical character, but to add to it. We even sourced period lumber from within the town.

That speaks to our mission of preservation. Next, we were able to design the space to be functional, meeting our needs on a variety of practical levels

while still embracing the sophisticated, elegant and mythical level of a bygone era. The space simply exudes JAZZ and is poised for some high profile use!

That speaks to our mission of performance. Lastly, this space will be used to archive our important collection.

Interns, historians and scholars will find quiet and solace there and the technology which is in place will afford us to digitize and preserve at a heightened level on par with the Smithsonian.

This speaks to our mission of education. I do not think we could have blended 1750 with the juke joint culture of the 1920’s and 30’s with the 21st century any better!”

Funding for the project came from a $40,000 grant from The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, Inc. and a matching gift from Jazz Loft patron Dan Oliveri.

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic?

Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time.

Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Gaining access to the Coal Bin in the basement of the Jazz Loft is half the fun. With a door secretly hidden behind a bookcase, anyone wishing to enter must know where to look.

And then there’s the secret password. It’s a speakeasy, after all. There has to be a secret password.

The Coal Bin room is a salute to juke joints of the early 20th Century, such as Herb McCarthy’s Bowden Square with a basement space for music called the Coal Bin, which was literally located in the coal bin area of the building’s basement. The new Coal Bin will serve as an additional gem in the crown that is the Jazz Loft, as well as a functional work space as the Loft continues its mission of archiving and preserving Jazz history.

“The Coal Bin was designed to impress and wow even the most critical of Jazz impresarios,” said Tom Manuel, founder of the Jazz Loft.

The ambitious renovation of the Loft’s basement into the Coal Bin was Manuel’s vision, whose

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us.

This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need.

Rocky Point’s Pocket Theater Student Performance Rocky Point High School’s Pocket Theater Production premiered on April 23 and featured seven Drama Club students – Jillian Carley, Jordan Chirivas, Brenna Kiernan, Samantha Leversen, Adam Olszewksi, Renee Ortiz and Jennifer Sandusky – in “Selfie,” a dramedy by playwright Bradley Hayward.

The short play is based on the characters as they

prepare for the future with the obstacles that senior high school students can often relate to, including bullies, parents, peer pressure and their own self-judgment while they search for ways to stand out from the crowd. As the characters document their year, they come to the realization that life is not about what other people see, but about the pictures they have of themselves.

Under the direction of Mary Donovan-Cerasuola and production assistants Emma Maher, Brianna Metz and Jennifer Sandusky, the show took place in the high school auditorium with each student permitted to have two guests in attendance to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The show was also posted to the district’s YouTube channel for athome audiences.

Rocky Point High School senior Kristen Zoll will be one of the thinkers and makers to shape the future as a freshman at the Pratt Institute, the renowned college for art and design, in the fall of 2021. Kristen was awarded The Pratt President’s Wallace Augustus Rayfield Scholarship to attend the institute’s School of Art. She was notified of the honor during a Zoom scholarship meeting led by Pratt’s president, Frances Bronet.

The school was so impressed with Kristen’s talents, character and

qualifications that it has invited her to study there on this scholarship for seven years, according to Rocky Point High School Principal Jonathan Hart.

To make the Zoom call more meaningful, Hart asked Kristen to invite an influential staff member to attend the scholarship meeting.

She chose Gregory Armine, her art teacher and art/library chairperson, to join her.

“It was one of the greatest thrills of my career to have been included in the meeting,” Armine said.

Kristen is one of only five students to be offered a

Students in the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Investment Club are continuing to develop financial strategies and recently participated in The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association Foundation’s Stock Market Game, in which they worked in groups competing against schools across Long Island.

Headed by high school language teacher and club adviser Mr. Robert Farenga, the competition ran from September through April and the students invested an imaginary equity portfolio of $100,000. Sophomore Safiy Khan placed first in the high school division of Long Island, growing his portfolio to $226,027.03, which beat the growth of S&P 500 index by 107%. Interesting Facts About Memorial Day Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. · Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the

time the war ended in 1865.

According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina.

After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. · Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses

were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these

efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as

“Memorial Day.” · It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be. · Debate exists about which

town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966.

Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.
